Order of play decided by location

Postby crustykev on Wed May 11, 2011 3:33 am

I've noticed the order of play can affect how long it takes until your next turn comes up.
e.g. Player 1 is in Australia. he comes home from work and signs into CC at 7pm local time, and plays a turn.
About 18 hours later Player 2, from the West Coast of the USA signs into CC at 7pm local time, and plays a turn.
About 20 hours later Player 3 from the East Coast of thre USA signs into CC at 7pm local time and plays a turn.
About 20 hours later, Player 4 from France signs into CC at 7pm local time and plays a turn.

Obviously I've used a worst case scenario as my hypothetical example where it takes about 3 days for four players to have a turn.
But if the player order was reversed, it would take one day for everyone to have a turn.

So my suggestion is that CC decides the order of play so it is sequential around the world, hopefully making games faster.
CC can do this because we all have our country displayed on our CC home page.
Thoughts?

So you assume everyone from around the world plays their turn at the exact same time?

What if the guy from Australia takes his turns in the morning, and the one from France in the morning?

i couldn't care less how long it takes people to take their turns.

that's one of the perks of premium. give it a try, it is only $2ish a month.

I check on morning and night.
But it would be reasonable to assume that most people who check CC once a day, do so in the evening.
If the scenario you outline occurs, we are no worse off than we are now.
But most of the time, we would be better off.

I will go premium soon.
But that wont speed up 24 hour games.

It will allow me to play speed games.
And it will allow me to have more games where I'm waiting for people to have a turn, which will mean there will always be some games that need me to have a turn.

greonoaks meant the same as you. With premium you can have more games then 4, so if you have more games waiting on players, there is usually a few or more you can play each day...

If you don't like how the play order of Sequential goes, why don't you try Freestyle?

Just a thought,
but players sign up when they want too, that usually is a good indication that they are online. if they are online at 8 today, maybe they are online at 8 tonight, so the game should already be according to what you propose.. problem is with those that change their cc time, there is no cure against that

I was thinking about Freestyle today before I saw your post.
And I was wondering why CC had added a freestyle version, and I was thinking that perhaps freestyle was created for the very reason that this topic is about, not wanting to wait so long for a turn.

The point of having a suggestion sub-forum is so people can make suggestions that could make the site better.
That's all I'm doing.
And if enough people like the idea, and if it doesnt take too much work to make the improvement, then maybe they wil make the improvement.

And if no one likes the idea, and its too much work, they wont

Well how about each player decides for themselves, what time they are most likely to be online.
You could do this with the 24 hour clock that the site uses in the game log.

It wont always work, but if it improves 1/4 of the games then its worthwhile.
Of course, that's assuming it doesnt take weeks of programming to make it possible.

I doubt this would be implemented. Not everybody logs in at time X in their zone. So someone in France may log on at 7pm daily, but someone in Western Canada only logs on early morning. This would only make a few, my bet very few, cases actually work.

I dont see how it could screw up any games.
The ones that werent improved would be no worse than they are now

The reason this suggestion cannot work is: as soon as a player ends his turn the clock starts ticking, the next player has 24 hours for his/her turn. Doesn't matter where you live 24 hours is 24 hours. The fact that players from all over the world play this game is a good thing bad also a thing we have to wait for... sometimes...

I dont get your point.
I'm not saying we still shouldnt have 24 hours.
But if players allocated on a 24 hour clock what time they were most likely to play, and if the code then sorted those players into sequential time order, most times they wouldnt need their 24 hours.

Player A plays his turn.
Player B plays 3 hours later.
Player C plays 6 hours later.
Player D plays 4 hours later.
Player A plays 11 hours later etc.

A game takes 24 hours to go through one rotation instead of 2 or 3 days.

Thing is, a player could take advantage of this if he so choose. Locate 1v1 games where going first is QUITE a bit help, determines when the appropriate time to join, BAM, he gets to go first every single time.

I had been thinking about that.
To my knowledge, (which is very limited) the program allocates who goes first randomly.
I dont see why it cant continue to do so, and then continue sequentially by selected time zone after that.

Yes I could by invitation.
A suggestion doesnt have to work for everybody all of the time to be worthwhile.
e.g. At some time in the past, someone may have said "lets play tournaments".

Just because 20% dont want to ever play tournaments doesnt mean that the site shouldnt have them.
One thing I noticed as a greenhorn with limited site access is how many people sign up to CC and then dont play the game theyve signed up to.
I assume this happens because a game can take a while to get started, or to play.

Anything that speeds up play, encourages more people to play, which has to be good for CC and all of us.

what would be good for CC and all of us is if more people bought membership.

this suggestion of yours would cost the site to implement and mostly have no impact on those who would be paying for this. however, it would benefit greatly those who contribute nothing to the cost of running this site.

my suggestion to you, upgrade to premium and this 'problem' that bothers you will go away.

One question - when you come to the second move isn't it still 58 hours after the person in Australia made his/her first move and therefore now 2 days and 10 hours later for the next move? Maybe I'm not getting it with the timezones but it doesn't seem to add up to me.

I just REALLY think this won't affect as many people as you think. For starter's, most premium player's don't tend to care how long it takes for said turn to come around. If they are upset at how slow they are getting turns, then they can join more games.

As for freemium's, why should lack use his time on a suggestion that will probably only affect player's who don't even pay for the site? He's trying to hit as MANY user's as possible (His last feature being Clickable maps).

For this to work at what you hope for, 25%, you would really have to hope that a whole lot of users log on uniformly. And even if they did, it would probably only impact the users who don't pay to play on here.
