lol... i assumed they represented the blue ridge mountains as this was the location of a very significant strategy move by a general in days past. Let me explain...

During the American Civil War (known by some as the war of northern aggression), the infantry under Confederate General Stonewall Jackson earned the nickname "foot cavalry" by traveling very quickly across the Blue Ridge Mountains which really messed up the Union leaders opposing them. Jackson used a detailed knowledge of the gaps in the Blue Ridge range to accomplish this, as well as marching his troops through the original Blue Ridge Tunnel.

Oh my... I just HAVE TO say something about this too... there were four tunnels in all, the longest one, the Blue Ridge Tunnel was 4/5 of a mile long. It was dug from both sides though solid granite with only hand drills and black powder, a decade before the invention of dynamite. SOLID GRANITE! Imagine that! The tunnel was less than a half-foot off perfect alignment when it was holed-through on Christmas Day 1856, 117 years before GPS (Global Positioning System) was invented! When complete, it was the longest in the US and one of the longest tunnels in the world, a remarkable feat of engineering. Opened to rail traffic in April of 1858, it was considered to be one of the engineering wonders of the modern world.

Anyway, based on these historical references, I think steels' avatar is just fine... unless of course, he is blue coat!

WOW  first, I was laughing because someone finally pointed out my lazy avatar as In the past I was able to have more options than I have now but have since changed computers at work and just chose one that looked good that was readily available.....but, since Robinette has chose to give the history lesson for this picture-I will keep it in honor of her hard work and decline the offer generiosly offered by Jake Kelton(although I will have to remember you when I do want to change my avatar).

Why not do both?

Have Jake make you a kick butt logo with the historical blue hills as the background?

And Robinette, I am interested in the history lesson on the woman in the green dress.
I bet she was some mistress of a confederate love triangle which tore apart at the fragile seems of the struggling new country. Generals fought over her, women admired her, armies marched through hazarders blue ridge moutain passes just to see her. Or was she the mastermind behind the Lincoln assination, seducing John Wilkes Boothe into doing her bidding.
Am I anywhere close?

Now what makes you suppose I am a southerner? (other than my post above)
I happen to be from California, but my Papa, and his Papa's Papa and so on, was from Virginia, which I think you know went both blue and gray. So our family was one of those that fought against each other... as a matter of fact, the family farm was not far from where the "Battle of Bull Run" occured.... (ahem).... I mean, the "Battle of Manassas"

So was it "The Civil War",
"The War Between the States",
or "The War of Northern Aggression"?

Well that depends on your point of view now doesn't it.
One thing is for sure, it was a tragic waste of human life.

No problemo. He he he, sorry, I wouldn't want to be making people bowing down to my avatar. Ok, sooooooooo.... I'll stew on some ideas for a while.

I could make him one with a Colonel thing in the background, instead of General, so he could switch them out.

And if you want one, I'm open for requests. :D Though a little bump in a direction would help. (exp - "I want a cool avatar" is no help at all. "I want an avatar with a cowboy and a six-shooter" helps me in a direction to aim my work in. :P )

Well........ that is a bit more proper....
and I gracefully accept your explanation and apology.
And by all means, do attend to the needs of the young 'uns.

I am quite relieved to know the real reason for the slight.
I had started to rekon that you was from New York City.
