WWII Pacific Theatre of War

Post by Minister Masket »

This idea came about from a conversation between me and Fireside Poet in Live Chat yesterday. This is my first time in the Map Foundary, so do bear with me.

In front of me on Pg208 of my "Atlas of WW2" book, there is a map of the Pacific Ocean, from Japan and China in the west, to Hawaii in the east, and stretching from Australia in the south all the way to the Aleutian Islands in the north - basically encompassing every battle fought between Japan and America. So if you take a look at the WWII Australia map, and apply those mechanics to this much larger scale, you're along the right lines of what I'm thinking of here.

So what I'm gonna do is draw up a quick visual representation of this is Paint to give you some idea of what I mean.
It won't be professional looking by any means, I warn you now.

Opinions?

I agree that this is a great idea, but the question is, when in the war are you going to make this map? Would it be the biggest advance of the Japanese Empire, or the middle of the war in 1943? I would think that it would be when Allied airplanes are close enough to attack or bombard mainland Japan. And will there be carriers? :?:

Why does it have to be set at a particular time?
Eeeehhh, I'm not sure sure having airplanes bombing Japan to be in great taste if I'm honest. But the carriers, definately.

I will have that poory-drawn Paint impression up A.S.A.P

Well I think for a historical battle map it needs to have a specific time period so the set up can be correct

It's more of a war map than a battle. Think of the WW2 Europe map, the one that combines the smaller maps. All it does is show the territories involved, which is what I want here. Nothing too fancy for a first map.

If there is a WWII Pacific Map, there should be a way of simulating navies

Well i think this is a great idea.
But asking not to have maps from it....let's see....
Battle For Australia (that includes a limited Battle of the Coral Sea), Pearl Harbour, and Iwo Jima already are in live play.
Midway has been asked for more than once before, and i may start that later this year if no-one else does.
The Battle of Malaya and Singapore, and The East Indies; Operation Cartwheel, Guadalcanal, Kokoda, Gilbert and Marshall Islands
The Battle of the Leyte & Philippines would be really interesting.
And Yes, it would be feasible to have bombers bombing japan from Okinawa, The Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima as well as Task Force 3 east of Japan.

This probably won't be a map, but I just want to mention the War Off Samar, a battle between a Japanese armada, including the world's biggest ship, against American ships of Taffy 3, which had Destroyer Escots, Escort Carriers, and some other tin-can ships, and the Americans won.

Perhaps something based on War Plan Orange instead ... Give it that 20s/30s Dreadnought feel to it.

Yeah...the Paint thing wasn't working out too well, and Benn's picture up there pretty much sums it up.
Sooo...where do we go from here?

The idea sounds solid but you need someone to deliver the graphics. You can work on gameplay for quite a while first and do the map in paint but in the end that won't cut it and you will need some real graphics software.

To start, you can draw some skeleton maps of how the gameplay will work. Check out the Monsters! thread in the main forum for a great illustration of how to draw up the gameplay of a map without working on the graphics at all. Once that is started we can add suggestions and begin the actual development.

The main problem I see is that there is a lot of water and so you would get relitivly small amount of territories with a lot of space. Ships could be a good solution though.

A skeleton map aye?
Well I can draw better with a pen than a mouse, and I do have a scanner here at home.
Alrighty then, what I'll do is draw up the borders and stuff on A4, colour-code it in Paint, then upload it by Wednesday. It'll be more focused and will hopefully look better.

The important thing is to get a feel for how you envisage transforming the physical map into a CC map... look at Pearl Harbour / Waterloo as good examples of 'battlefield' maps...
