Forbid new recruits from voting in polls

Postby InkL0sed on Tue Jan 20, 2009 10:59 pm

Concise description:
  • Don't let new recruits vote in forum polls

Specifics:
  • What the title says. There are no specifics beyond that.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • This should almost completely remove the possibility of any cheating in polls; and while this is normally not something of consequence, sometimes it can be, especially in map-making competitions... *cough*

well, not all of us hit that part of the forums, so you should give a link and a detailed description of what happened. as your suggestion stands, i'd say it is right up there with the other one from this week about premiums only being able to make suggestions... details!!!! spill the beans!!! give it up!!! the black jesus is curious...-0

No.

The specifics aren't important. The suggestion would help to stop cheating in general. If it helps make foundry contests more honest, then that is good. but it isn't the only reason.
It could help with polls everywhere, throughout CC.
If anyone has a reason to give themselves more votes in a poll, it would be good to make it so they can't use new recruits to do it.

whatever, you need specifics. the foundry is the only place that polls seem to matter. i have never seen a poll in the GD or Suggestions that truly mattered of caused a rule change. the biggest poll i have ever seen had 77 or so votes about babysitting rules. if people are hijacking maps and contests, you should give specific examples, because the polls around the rest of the forums are obviously not as important as the ones in the foundry. so, either give specifics, or don't count on support from people that aren't involved in the foundry. that simple... the black jesus has spoken...-0

p.s.-once again the arrogance of the foundry has leaked into the forums. "you don't need to know the specifics, just agree with us."

Poll that decides who's maps to scrap and who's to make part of the site has 300 people vote on it, to make the results really close. Some of the people that voted were busted for multis meaning they could have affected which map was on the site, and now we are having a re-vote.

Enough info?

thank you, Neon... that is troublesome... there has to be a better solution than making it only
open to premiums to vote. if you did that, there would be other ways to beat the system. for
instance, it would be far too easy to swing one's own agenda simply by talking to a few of the
right people to help mobilize some votes from people that never visit the foundry. for example,
getting one's clan to vote for a map, or a close friends clan to help out. maybe limiting the vote
to foundry regulars or those that have participated in the development of the map or those that
have registered to vote, somehow. but then how would you count the votes if it wasn't an open
poll? hmmmm... the black jesus is confused and feels your pain...-0

Problem with a suggestion like this one is that it requires a hack in the forums php software (From my limited knowledge or coding). This is generally a turn off for management since hacking php makes it that little bit harder to give the forum official php updates.

Somewhere down the line in the distant future I would rather see php4 (if that even is on the cards) get installed smoothly.

But there is every chance there is an easy fix for this and everything I just said was bullshit >.<

It's completely possible, the only change would be to add all new recruits to a group that has a NEVER permission for voting in polls, once the new recruit earns their first promotion, they would be removed from the group, (I have sql queries to do this if lack wants to see them)

with phpBB (and my advanced knowledge of it) you can do almost anything to these forums

So... any reasons why we shouldn't?

Can we get some idea from an admin of whether this is likely to be implemented?

i like this, especially for polls of consequence such as those in the foundry and suggs and buggs. new recruits can't be expected to have enough knowledge and experience to make an educated, reliable decision and thus should not be involved in the selection and implementation of items of significant consequence to the cc community. in gd, clan forums, unrelated, etc. i see no problem letting them vote but certainly not in places where important decisions are being made. the multis involved in the map competition mentioned completely ruined it, causing the removal of eligibility for the two best maps in the competition. we are now forced to chose from inferior (but still good) maps, and the entire community suffers from this.

again, this is the attitude that keeps many people from going to the foundry in the first place. why not just close off the vote to only those you deem knowledgeable enough to cast informed votes? why not just create some foundry council where all the important decisions are made. because even when the community speaks out, you ignore them and declare things need to be changed (i.e.-map updates that many members still don't like and still don't feel were necessary).

i respect what goes on in the foundry, and i know how hard you all work and what you give to CC. however, i rarely venture there, because of the attitudes often encountered. and many people i speak to on a regular basis feel the same way. hard to feel as if you are a part of something, when often times, popular opinion is just ignored. some went to voice displeasure in the Brit Isles revamp when it first began, and simply were ignored as not being knowledgeable enough to make an informed opinion.

if you want to truly embrace the community and ask for real opinions, than do so. excluding people isn't going to help. if you take that step, than why not do as i suggested earlier? simply create a foundry council that decides all the important aspects of the current maps going through the process. the black jesus has spoken...-0

p.s.-and who is to say that the maps that won aren't better than the 2 that you liked? simply your opinion...

you're right about my opinion thing, i suppose i could be more objective hmm? with that said, the two maps disqualified were the two most popular in the original. poll, although i couldn't tell you how skewed the poll was by the multies. i don't mind the idea of some kind of 'forum council' for making most other decisions. in this case, however, community involvement was the entire purpose of the map, and many people were involved in creating the map from the ground up, from gameplay to territory names to map drawing and voting. in other cases this wouldn't be a problem but since this particular map has been intentionally created from the beginning with community input in mind, i think it's important to at least let this map be finished by the community.

also, i don't see how exclusion of those who are unfit to provide input wont help. remove those who are obviously unqualified, and then those who are left that are motivated to chime in can do so

i agree, because all the major decisions which are CC related are decided within the Tower of Babble.
i mean, your comment is just a given and pretty much common knowledge. without Tower of Babble,
CC would be a mere vessel lost in a sea of uncertainty at night, without a rudder or light house to guide
it along it's way through dark, menacing and choppy waters... the black jesus has spoken...-0

Honestly, how many new recruits find the forums anyway? The only new recruits I've seen post have been multis.

The Tower of Babble will not suffer if Norse cannot vote in polls.

okay, uh NO! every 2 years all of a sudden all of the new recruits are experinced and they now vote after they wish they cudda voted 2 years ago. it takes new people to judge, create, and help change the place so it can constantly be better.

the "foundry council" already exists in the form of the mods and the people who give out the stamps. the entire point of the competitions is to make it a democracy where people not in power get the opportunity to have a say in what maps they play.

and this is a great idea.
