There's another thing to consider here - I think #1 would be the best if you were going for an objective map.... So I think you need to decide what type of map this will be.
1) an objective map (like oasis - where you have to hold all 3 grand oasis terits to win)
2) or a classic style map (where you just need to eliminate all opponents to win)

I think #1 would be perfect for an objective map, with the objective being, hold all French ships and Yorktown to win the battle - this makes it historically accurate, and somewhat original, and fun! If you went this route, you could start the ships and Yorktown as neutrals so that all the players would have to battle to get them and win.

If you wanted to do a classic style map, any of the other options (and even #1) would work well. But #3, or #4 would probably be best for that.

But I think you should consider both options, because that could change a lot with your gameplay.

What do other people think about this?

If you go the objective route why not have british ships to and if you hold them and yourktown you win because the british would have probobly won if the ships got through to drop off supplies.

that's not a bad idea -
I just prefer to see it play out the way it really happened -
If you have all the ships, you control the bay, no supplies get through, then you take Yorktown where the British were dug in, and you win the battle and the game!

It just makes sense to me to control the bay and Yorktown in order to win. It's sort of like playing the battle from the French and American perspective.

Good Ideas. I like the Washington background. But I think the bombard are superflous.

Personally, I think the graphics you have drafted look 'thrown together'... Early on in the thread you posted an image of the Battle of Yorktown, and your draft barely resembles it. I'm not suggesting that you try and copy it, but at least trace the borders so the land is the same shape ;-)

A battle-scene map can be a great opportunity to tell some history and convey a sense of theatre - something which I feel is currently lacking from your draft. You need to work out exactly what story you want to tell, and then figure out how you can make best use of the available space and gameplay features to bring the battle to life.

The Battle of Yorktown is conveyed on your current map by a single territory - whereas you could have a whole map devoted just to that?:

Perhaps you could streamline the battle and make it work as some sort of insert into the whole campaign, as depicted in this image you posted earlier:

Once you know what you want to achieve, figure out how the gameplay is likely to work/pan-out. It is incredibly hard to get decent feedback on gameplay while your draft image is very rough, but if you come up with something that has a 'wow' factor, you'll get the response your looking for. Sadly, at the moment, there isn't a lot to pull people in...

I feel as if someone took the whole map and pushed on each side until it became distorted. I like the idea and feel of the map but you need some major changes. Your bonus structure is very off and has not pattern. What THE HELL is with flordalys being boats? YOU HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO! But maybe this will amount to something? Your move...

Alrighty, Tyler. I have showered after bball and feel refreshed, so I will take on ur map

Firstly, I realize that you will probably take Benn's idea and run with it, so this could be unnecessary, but still …

One, the entire map is, like I said, very isolated from part to part. The ones on the right are good, but the northernmost bonus (you still need to name these, by the way) is so far away from the other ones it's like it gets lost at sea. This also creates a humongous flaw in the gameplay. Alright, say I drop with Chenton, C. Charles, Oyster, and Red Bank. I'll drop all on Oyster, take Capeville and stop there after forting all to Red Bank, Capeville, and Oyster. Next turn comes, and with my bonus I take the four northernmost ships (still need to name 'em …), then fort all to the chokepoint ship (god it's hard without names). Now I have 15+ on there, can place my 7+ with the (ridiculous) +4 bonus I got on that ship, and take all the ships and V. Beach. With 15+ there and the ability to bombard 3 other places, I have won the game with a little troop concentration out west.

Point is, the bonuses are both ridiculous and detached from one another. See WM's Bonus Toolhere (.zip download file) and fill accordingly. That's a start.

About the graphics — while I do like the feel of the colors, the entire map is drawn out vertically. I know you traced the real borders from your source picture on the minimap, which shows how they really should be and looks oh-so-much better. Speaking of borders: if you really want to be cheap, which you seem to be doing here, hold shift while drawing your outline lines for a straight line. Please do! Also, you should probably redraw all the borders making sure to connect them and that they don't overlap twice and such like James City and Norfolk W. do. Another thing is that the island between Suffolk and Norfolk is unnecessary, IMO. The one off Pequoson is a bit better because it's bigger, but still. RJ's Charleston map could be something great for you to check out — although it is in a different setting he did a really good job spacing the separate islands (great map, btw). The ships will be needed to be redone for copyright, most likely. Also, when you fill in the islands use the paint bucket tool, don't just draw it in there like it looks like right now.

Just a start — got some ways to go ;) . I suggest taking Benn's idea, by the by.

P.S. your army circles will be too small (I think)

Why do you never update this even though the entire thing appears to be distorted, flor dalis are boats and your bonus structure makes no sense

Take off the shadow effect, add some bevel and emboss to the land, leave the lines how they are without the shadow and make sure the land is completely filled in bye the coast.

Please post your latest version in a new post in the thread too... you'll find you get more feedback that way, and that people (like me) can ,more easily tie comments to particular versions, without having to keep track of version numbers etc ;-)

Can you at least finish the draft?

You have no names, you have no bonuses, and you have not drawn any sea connections. Your legend has pretty much no text on it.

What is there to comment on if you give us a half-done product?
