I recently remembered that when dog fighting became a huge issue (thanks Mike Vick!) several reporters compared it to hunting. Animal rights issues in general interest me, so I was wondering what you think.

So as not to taint the thread, I'll chime in later with my own thoughts.

But seriously, is there any good reason for denying animals the basic rights we afford other humans, like the right to life and individual liberty? Or is the only difference between shooting a human and shooting a deer that one is illegal "because the law says so"?

I think we should arm all the deer and foxes. Nobody would mess with them then.

The difference between shooting a human and shooting a deer is one is a human and the other is a deer. Thats a great enough distinction that all others seem fairly insignificant. There is a difference between concerned about animal rights in respect of welfare and being vege/vegan or queueing up to chain yourself to the gates of your local medical research centre.

If you're a compassionate omnivore who enjoys a bit of steak that died happy clap your hands.

Let us get "human rights" taken care of before we concentrate on animals. It is my opinion that human life is just a tad more valuable than animal life.


(btw some people eat those deer they shoot)

I think animal rights stop after cruelty to animals. Define that, and problem sovled. I don't want to evict a gopher from my yard only to find that he's been living there for three weeks so I was supposed to file some paperwork.
Also, the droz test is cruelty to animals.

So far there are no arguments from the side that would deny animals their rights, it all boils down to "because I say so", at least jay was honest enough to openly state that it was his opinion that the life of a human is more valuable than the life of an animal.

But why is that? What're your reasons for thinking like that, jay and others?

It's natural to kill animals for their meat. Every predator on the planet does it. Are we supposed to go up to lions and tell them they can't kill other animals anymore because they have rights too? Now this is not to say I support hunting just for sport. Quite the opposite. If you are hunting, you should be taking more than just a head to put above your fireplace.

As an avid meat eater I agree.

Have you taken a good look at your teeth? Not much carnivorous to speak of there.

Have you taken a look at what tastes good to us. Not much herbivorous there.
