____________ - American

If you were born and raised in the United States, and so were your parents.....how many generations back of your family must have been born in America before you start calling yourself an American instead of a/an ________-American.

African-American
Mexican-American
Irish-American

I don't refer to myself as Greek-American. Probably because (1) My mother was Italian, not Greek and (2) I don't speak Greek. So, I guess once your ancestors enter into an inter-ethnic relationship such that you are no longer one ethnicity (genetically speaking) and/or you don't speak your ancestors' language, you're good.

British-American...but they figured out a long time ago (at least 5 generations) that being Canadian was preferable.

I don't think the African-Americans in France can ever call themselves American. Maybe they can say they're French, but I don't really know how things work in the fires of hell.

Because although they consider themselves American but are also proud of their heritage. It isn't as if they have dual loyalty or anything.

Saying that I'm an "Irish with a tiny bit of Norwegian and even smaller bit of German - American," doesn't mean I don't consider myself an American. It's just my ethnicity, not my nationality.

Agreed. You really have 2 different issues here. You are American if you are a citizen and consider yourself American, but many of us choose to honor an ethnicity in traditions.

In the first generation, it is comforting to talk to people from the "home country". Anyone who has lived a long time in other countries knows that no matter how happy you are, its nice to eat the foods you grew up with, speak some of the same language and perhaps follow some basic traditions. As generations go down, some ethnic traditions become family traditions, but a lot has to do with where you live. Communities often take on certain traditions as their own. Some, like Chinese New Year and Columbus Day parades have to to with ethnicity. Others, like Mardis Gras are more "home grown".
