19750 members and dropping

Post by timmytuttut88 »

Well CC has managed to lose 20-25% of their monthly active users considering I remember when they had 25000+. Why do you think that is?

Classic was most peoples favourite maps. People didnt come on here to play gay gimmick maps, they all started on classic

my answer is not an option
i think it is a combo of high ranks and mods
the mods rule like children making rules that seem to be helpful and friendly but do not go into the deeper reasoning of man and think the long term unintentional effects
then we ever new blood comes in they are murderd
i cant belive the site still runs
guess we are a bunch of addics

Partly its the loss of classic, many people enjoy playing risk and you cannot any more, partly its the amount of cheats, multis and farmers who have discredited the achievement of getting a high rank.

Agree, and would emphasize the loss of classic; some players like complex maps, but many enjoy complex strategy on very well known maps (war games are played on MAPS, not artists or symbols)!

this guy is probably the biggest reason.

otherwise, i'd say that the loss of classic was big

and i think at some point there are only so many people who wanna play risk online. we may have reached that plateau?

I'd say it was due to the loss of Classic map.I do not think farming has in anyway caused less people to join this site.

Wow we've got ourselves a character here? You don't think that some sort of statement is being made when the sites membership goes from 25000 to 19750? So you must have also thought nothing happened when Dow Jones plunged from 10000+ down to 8000. Keep in mind that the conquerclub user plunge is something farely recent. It's not like this has been happening slowly over time, this is a plunge.

The 2nd and 9th options are related and very probably part of it. The 3rd, 4th and 10th probably also play a role.

  • Economic depression - I'd say this has had zero effect
  • Classic got deleted - Easy to point the finger at, unlikely to account for 5k users, but I'd say it had an effect. Notable, is point 5 below which I think would counterbalance this a great deal, probably outdo it
  • FREE DANCING MUSTARD - Sorry DM: zero effect
  • Mods make up rules as they go along - The rules are stipulated clearly, there are special cases that get dealt with on a one-by-one basis. It's called real life, get over it. Also, zero effect
  • Too many maps and game options - This is what attracted me to the site, any many others so, opposite effect
  • High ranks intimidate newcomers - Probably has some effect, hard to measure. I'd say farming is more of a deterrant to newcomers than the simple idea of high ranks. Every game has high ranks, it's whether or not the high ranks are Canute's that's the issue
  • Interfacer PH - This guy has singlehandedly increased the user count by several hundred, so I'd say positive effect (with liberal use of the term positive)
  • Landgrab - This site is a mess. I could write better html and java with a million monkeys and a typewriter. On the broader idea of 'competition', it always exists, and serves as much to draw customers away as it does to promote better service and thereby attract more customers. Likely an overall neutral effect.
  • Hasbro - Zero effect
  • Guess my phone number! - I have no idea what this means

I find it interesting the amount of actual causes you have left out TTT88. Business success rests on a lot of factors. Here's some you neglected:
  • Seasonal trends
  • Market saturation
  • Lack of advertising
  • Organisational problems with the maps and game settings
  • Organisational problems with the forums
  • Hostile nature of ... how do I say this diplomatically ... 'young' users who are intent upon croning on about how wonderful they are and how crap everyone else is
  • The amount of shouting down that occurs in the Foundry and Tournament forums to new users who wish to contribute but don't know how
  • The class division that exists between 'popular' ranked players and stripes, making the environment seem hostile to newcomers
  • The dictatorial nature of some players, telling people what to do every move, and spitting chips when they don't do exaclty what is told (I experienced this first-hand in one of my first 10 games... from some douche who now languishes at the 1500 mark, and strangely enough languished there when I first came to the site - there is no accounting for aggro retards)
  • The numbers of posts started by a select few carrying on about how terrible the site is, while they continue to play game after game, renewing their membership year after year, then finally going out in a 'blaze of glory', which is really just a forum ban then a bunch of busted multi's
  • An increase in busted multi's and site security. q.v. wicked, Interfacer PH, norse, et al

Busted multis are removed from the scoreboard, so all those multis by *manimal, IPH, suggs, albertq, etc. increase the number for a bit but return it after they get busted. Also, you have to have completed a game to be on the scoreboard anyway.

I think the biggest issues are farming and long time between turns. I probably wouldn't have wanted to come back if my first few games were against super high ranks who just demolished me. Also, a lot of people probably get impatient with having to wait a while between turns.

I do agree with e_i_pi's point about the users who keep yelling about how bad the site is yet continue playing here. The forums are posted in by far fewer than the number of active users, but there probably is a somewhat higher percentage who read the forums yet never comment. So they're seeing all the crap in the forums and wonder why those people stick around.

So it's the community's fault that we're losing traffic? Man, it sure would be nice if that were managed somehow...

when you say 20%-25% is that as a whole or are we talking just paying members ? I'd be curious to see the decline in the different categories ... Freemium, Premium and then as a whole ....

wonder what the numbers look like broken down like that ?

Farming surely have some effect. When i Joined this site in 2006, being a major was like... You were an absolute pro...
Now a days, you can't get a high rank anymore... I do not care about having 1400 or 2000 points, it doesnt have a meaning anymore. I don't care, cause I like playing this game, but lot's of people do.

you cant be seriously trying to tell us that C.C. has lost 5000 members because they were busted as multi's are you?
If thats true, then that reflects very badly on this site

I'm not bashing by saying the following, but in my opinion its because of the removal of the classic map, statistically, classic had the most games played on it.

I joined this site after googling online risk and C.C. came up as the result of the search. they had their disclamers that this was different than "risk"., but the map was the map with the same terminology and game play. i did not look and say wow, they have 88 variations of risk, how cool. I said great they have risk, call it classic, call it whatever. I used to play 70+ games at a time, now about a dozen and 8 are a private tourney.

now since there isnt a better alternative i will continue to be a premium customer, but without classic as classic as such this site has lost its magic for me, and i am sure for alot of other people, as well as potential new customers who are not interested in 100+ variations of "risk" but are looking for the real thing.

So here is a question. You're contending that the scoreboard used to list 2500 players and now lists 19750? How does someone get off the scoreboard except by a ban/bust? Even players that aren't active are still listed on the scoreboard. Is it possible that they just cleaned up a bunch of players who were busted over the past 6 years or so or that you're 2500 number is incorrect (or both).

Maybe I'm not understanding how the scoreboard works and someone can correct me but at the moment, I'm rejecting your general premise.

i believe it has to do with a player having an active game in the last 30 days
