Where is Everyone??

Post by cairnswk »

I'm almost afraid to ask this, but apart from lack of interest in my maps, I notice that there is a lot of people not commenting in the foundry on maps these last few weeks.

Is cairnswk his own worst-enemy...map-making to an early grave?

The Foundry seems really inactive at present..is everyone in the Northern Hemisphere on holidays, or are most of them "Down Under" with "Papa".

The other thing i've got to say is that a lot of the what used-to-be-normal foundry chat, discussion and criticism seems to have moved to the AADOMM thread. Has this thread become the "nemesis" of the Foundry by taking away the discussion factor that used to go on in here. Perhaps it should be left for admin purposes only.

Simply asking questions...playing devil's advocate. :)

I only really comment on maps with exiting new gameplay, or don't have "exiting new gameplay" I think there are far too many standard "classic" maps, all with different names in territories and practically the same gameplay. The number of new map ideas has decreased substantially =(

activity around here always tends to come in waves. But yes, I've noticed it's been very quiet lately... last night a post of mine was the most recent post for about four hours!

Maybe everybody is quietly working on their Brazil revamp submissions? :-k We might see a flurry of activity after the due date.

What I'm concerned about is that everybody around here seems to be a mapmaker - everyone is following their own threads and doesn't have time to look at anybody else's work. Too many chiefs, not enough indians.

Dont know about others, but exams and coursework have left me dead in the water for the past three or four months. Perhaps similar problems are affecting the younger members.

Usually Im active and commenting on every map. Sadly, RL caught up with me about 2 weeks ago, and at the start of this week I decided to become active again in the foundry. But until I figure out how to get 1 thing done that I been trying to do for over 4 weeks for my map/telvania gets back to me on that thing/start updating my map again, the foundry hasnt been as... well... fun if i may. Maps are coming to fast in the ideas for me to comment on them at favorable pace (used to be 1-2 new ideas a day, now its 4 or more). People are coming up with updates faster than before (used to take 2 -10 days, now it seems that every day theres another update) and people just started disappearing, people that make the foundry fun. In my oppinion, the people that make the foundry the most fun are:

Telvania
DiM
Coleman
uh.. maybe cairns :)
Andy
Oaktown

and sorry gimil, but to me your a little to strict, making me want to come here less.

I've been trying to be substantially active in the Ideas forum, lending ideas to improve an early-stage map. Right now I'm at a music conference, so my general activity is a bit lower.

One thing that bugs me is that a lot of maps that were going strong in the main foundry dropped off the radar due to the mapmakers being too busy to update or field comments (e.g., Dark Age Britain). We seem to be suffering from a large amount of temporary burnout that I hope remains temporary and gets borne out in the near future.

Wasn't there a proposal about sometime ago that was supposed to fix the visitations to the Foundry i.e. something put in place rather than mapmakers advertising in the GD threads.

I completely disagree with you on the "too many classic style maps" comment. Right now the last thing we need is a bunch more maps that everyone "niches" into and never plays anything else. It makes my life as a TD a pain in the rear. We need far more maps that everyone can transition between without needing to spend days figuring them out first.

As for the traffic in the Foundry, I am guilty of following only specific projects that I find appealing. Right now that would be Charleston, Iceland, the small maps by Ruben (although they don't seem to need much commenting), and the USA 6 Pack.

There is something in the works, hopefully to be given to everyone, foundry, tournaments, etc to help generate a little more traffic. :)

The foundry does seem to be a bit quieter recently... I know I haven't been posting as much, partly due to time issues, partly due to the honest fact that I haven't seen any maps in the pipeline that are as compelling as arms race...

Plus, in a general sense, I think one thing that might subconsciously be keeping people from posting more is the rather embarrassing fact that a half-dozen quenched maps have just been lying there like my third ex-wife, waiting to be loaded.

there are plenty of interesting maps out there. and i think even if people don't like them for one reason or another, they should still be able to swing by and say, "hey, maybe you could add this, or do this" because the quality of maps still needs to remain high.

ps. what do you mean when you say your ex-wife is waiting to be loaded?

I'm jumping from one vacation to the next, and trying to get ahead / caught-up at work. Summer months are way too fun to be hanging out in the foundry.

There are a few good maps out there (bering sea comes to mind), but the small maps don't really interest me, I still have yet to bond at all with forbidden city, and I'd be lying if I said I was at all a fan of the USA 6-pack (for my money, the original USA map is almost unspeakably hideous). I do keep meaning to poke my head into the das schloss thread, but I maintain that the map will still be tough to balance without a test site (or at least a beta stage).

Oh, and the third ex-wife thing was more about her just lying there, like the quenched maps... ;) thankfully it ain't true, never been married, which is why I still get to keep most of my paycheck!

My life has been mega busy recently (and will be until September!)... and after a monster weekend of boozing - I've been struggling to move let alone be on the forums...

And today - as the aches and pains wear away - my internet at work was borked by BT!!

Well you have many mine topic with these question. I also stop giving feedback(last whas in yours Forbiden City, and you apply almost all mine sugestions),because people just ignoring mine sugestion,so i dont want to waste time on that.
