You aren't following the science hard enough to understand 2dimes, you gotta follow it real hard. Vaccine hard. Science like when a man and a women (2 genders ONLY) get together and they follow the science so hard, like soooo so hard until they poop (on the moon) and elon grabs the poop (bare handed - no atmosphere, real man stuff) and brings it back to earth and uses alchemy (real science) to turn the poop into gold.

There's tons of oxygen on the moon, in the form of aluminum oxides. Easy enough with unlimited energy to electrolyze aluminum oxides.

If you can figure out a way to more efficiently release the oxygen contained in those minerals as gaseous oxygen, either using much less energy or even better, a process that can harness energy. You might have a process worth much more than $2million. Theorizing you can prevent someone from copying it. A patent probably won't help.

Currently they're hoping someone can figure out an efficient way to convert the feces that would be created at a lunar base into something more useful.

On Earth you can build a pretty decent system using plants, fish and water to recycle the nutrients from human waste into edible fish and vegetables plus filtering the water to make it potable. As a bonus, the plants in that system will also recapture the carbon from carbon dioxide humans in the building exhale, returning the oxygen to the air.

The offer is for someone to figure out how to get something like that running on Luna, without needing to transport the amount of water needed for the systems on earth, because water is quite heavy.

It's the same as that contest to get a civilian out of the Earths atmosphere. He is creating a motivation to discover a new process. If you can achieve the objective there is a cash prize.

Conversely if you can build a less expensive rocket, capable of safely moving much more weight, you could just under bid him.

Then you will need to make enough profit to offer a prize for someone else, to solve the lunar waste water treatment problem for you. Instead of shuttling it back.
