if there was a draft...

Post by heavycola »

... would you sign up?

Just an idea I had from reading Guiscard's thread, and a question I asked in a thread that i couldn't find afterwards.

If the US/UK decided that the situations in Afghanistan and Iraq had gotten so bad that they brought in conscription, would you go to war?

Well. I would not sign up for the draft because I feel I shouldn't be forced into a war. If I want to join the military I will but I am not going to forced into it.

I'm one of the lucky ones that can squirm out of it on medical conditions. But if they did ask, the answer would be "no"

I'd be disbarred from military service on disability grounds. Hooray! Also, I'm not allowed to work as an airline steward.

So basically I can do neither what is perceived as being the most manly of jobs, nor can I do what is perceived as being the most effeminate of jobs, so there's a pleasing symmetry there.

PS: I like the poll options.

i'd join up; i've always wanted to be in the Army, but maybe as I get older this interest will dissipate. besides, i'm way too weak to become a soldier (i believe you have to do 77 pushups in a few minutes..i can't even get past like 30)

I served in the Israeli military for 3 years, but service is mandatory for us. I can't really take the poll hmm. On the other hand if I were an American citizen I suppose I'd dodge a draft under the current circumstances, I do think that fighting in Iraq is quite unjustifiable. Do you really think that the US would send 150,000 troops to some god forsaken land if it didn't have an abundance of oil in it?

If there was a draft, i would try to find where it was coming from, then cover it with either some packing tape, a pillow, or a draft excluder.

seriously though, i'm 34....who the f*ck is going to want my sorry ass in their regiment ?:-s

not me, since you would stop a draft with package-tape, instead of just closing the window.

How would you get out of it without any kind of medical excuse? Conscription is involuntary, you don't have a choice.

I'd go back to being a fisherman who are excluded from call up for duty along with farmers and serve my country my own way by putting tasty fishy treats in our tummies.

But in all serious I think this question goes a bit further than that. I recently got asked to do some contract software development work for the MOD. I haven't taken it as I'm busy at the moment but I haven't said no, and the MOD always have work so the offer is kind of open ended. Once your in and have security clearance the cash is great and the work never dries up so its a good offer. If we're talking about would you not sign up because you don't agree with the war, does working for the MOD in IT constitute signing up? Where do you draw the line at what is contributing to the war? Are we not all in some way or another doing that with or against our will anyway...

Actually, even without getting a medical deferment, which isn't the most difficult thing given a friendly doctor, there are two alternatives to getting drafted:
a) If conscientiously objected to the war, get C.O. status. It's kinda hard to prove that you are (if completely honest; they basically ask if you would've signed up to fight the Nazis, that objection to the war does not constitute conscientious objection to military service, etc/
b) The easiest: Don't go. They can't make you. If it's important to you, go to jail for 5 years or so.

The whole concept of not having any choice is pretty messed up.

out of curiosity (I'm not refrencing military actions just a point of interest) someone has your family held at gun point, you're free and have a gun, do you shoot him?
