there should be a way to see where you're at in medal attainment...3 games away from getting one, 10 games, etc...

There is, it's called map rank.

The last number in each lines tells you how many unique defeats you need for the medals. So you need 10 more unique defeats for the freestyle medal, 12 for the doubles medal etc etc

Freestyle 0 10 10 Italy,Feudal War
Doubles 0 8 12 Midgard,North America
Nuclear Bronze (1) 83 17 Doodle Earth,Duck And Cover
Manual Bronze (1) 81 19 WWII Poland
Speed 0 0 20 None
Triples 0 0 20 None
Quadruples 0 0 20 None
