This annoys me more than anything in the world!!!

Post by targetman377 »

Watching the news about Wisconsin (living in the state i see it a lot) and a protester comes on and says "this is democracy in action"! or "this is not what a democracy does" or you are talking to your friends and they say "we live in a Democracy" THIS IS THE ONE THING THAT pisses me off more than anything i truly believe if you don't understand what type of government we have you should not be allowed to vote. And if you did not know WE HAVE A REPUBLIC! at the federal level then at the state its still set up with a REPUBLIC with democratic cheeks meaning the people have the power ONLY TO RECALL!!! and some states allow referendum but do not govern based on them.

THIS JUST MAKES ME SO ANGRY!!!!!! it pisses me off so much!!!! does anyone else have any thing that tics them off as much as this does for me. and if you did not know it pisses me off a lot i blow a casket every time some one says it cause all it is stupidity. if you think you live in a democracy and you live in these US of A then GUESS WHAT LEAVE!!!!!

We may not live in a democracy, but the power of the people is democratic in nature (hence why we describe ourselves as a democratic republic).

This is a line (Republic, not a Democracy) that comes up a lot for some Americans. I've not really seen a satisfactory explanation for it- it's not like they're exclusive. Sometimes it looks like a line learned at school at never contemplated, and other times it just looks like the words are being used on completely different terms to those I understand.

I've tried looking for reliable sources, but mostly I seem to get the usual right-wing random ranting blogs. Still, I'll post what I've found from a conservative who I generally like, and find difficult to disagree with even when I'd like to- Eugene Volokh:

Ok, for all of you that think i do not know my stuff you all are wrong A democracy is everyone that is a citizen of that country you inhabit votes for everything in a democracy there is no legislation if someone wants to pass a law that means guess what everyone votes and if you get 51% of the votes you win! in a republic you get a vote yet that vote is for someone to REPRESENT YOU There job is to make the laws for you! see there are distinct differences you can't have a democracy with a republic cause a democracy is every one votes for every thing. you cant bend that rule cause other wise its not a democracy. As to my comment that a democratic republic would be a contradiction of terms as i defined early! and a republic with democratic initiatives is not a contradiction of terms because it does not say its a democracy i said initiatives mean the STATES!!! HAVE REFERENDUMS even those go to representative process first. AND SOME STATES CAN RECALL! these things are democratic in nature! but do not make a democracy!

There really is far too much wrong here to go point by point,

1) You've essentially defined democracy as "every one votes for every thing." On a very obvious level, this is not true.

2) You've defined a republic as a system where your "vote is for someone to REPRESENT YOU". The UK allows citizens to do this, but is not a republic.

You've based your arguments on completely bizarre definitions of the terms.

No...what you are calling a "democracy" is actually called a "direct democracy". We live in a democratic republic. I teach this stuff...and IT'S REALLY VERY BASIC. Educate yourself. Please.

Like Jones said, the correct saying is "blow a gasket".

"Blow a casket" is actually code for a necrofile sexual act prefered and practiced by a silent majority on the left.

Democracy is a form of political organization in which all people, through consensus (consensus democracy), direct referendum (direct democracy), or elected representatives (representative democracy) exercise equal control over the matters which affect their interests.[1] The term comes from the Greek: δημοκρατία – (dēmokratía) "rule of the people",[2] which was coined from δῆμος (dêmos) "people" and κράτος (Kratos) "power", in the middle of the 5th-4th century BC to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states, notably Athens following a popular uprising in 508 BC.[3] Even though there is no specific, universally accepted definition of 'democracy',[4] equality and freedom have been identified as important characteristics of democracy since ancient times.[5] These principles are reflected in all citizens being equal before the law and having equal access to power. For example, in a representative democracy, every vote has equal weight, no restrictions can apply to anyone wanting to become a representative, and the freedom of its citizens is secured by legitimized rights and liberties which are generally protected by a constitution.[6][7]

ok, lets look in to depth at what this means shall we? it says here direct democracy interesting! but even how people say we have that IT goes further to difine dirict democracy as
For example, in a representative democracy, every vote has equal weight, no restrictions can apply to anyone wanting to become a representative,

no restrictions funny i clearly remember in our constitution age limits are in place not to mention presidents limits! :-k

in case you don't like wikiapedia defination here is webstares
a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections

Funny rule by simple majority! oh and where the supreme power is vested in the people well i guess our constition is not the supreme law of the land. OH WAIT IT IS!!! funny how that works!
republic is a form of government in which the people, or some significant portion of them, retain supreme control over the government.[1][2] The term is generally also understood to describe a government where most decisions are made with reference to established laws, rather than the discretion of a head of state, and therefore monarchy is today generally considered to be incompatible with being a republic. One common modern definition of a republic is a government having a head of state who is not a monarch.[3][4] The word "republic" is derived from the Latin phrase res publica, which can be translated as "a public affair", and often used to describe a state using this form of government.

Now lets look at this a some people make the law look at that. The legislative branch all 535 members make that law!!! YES WE ELECT THEM!!!! DEMOCRATIC INITIATIVE!!!!! NOT DEMOCRACY!!!!!

1
a (1) : a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president (2) : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government b (1) : a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law (2) : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government

funny how that last one sounds just like America oh wait no it's not!!!!

further proof
The United States of America (also referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district

weikapeadia again describes america as a federal constitutional republic. funny there not even a demo word in that

Government type:
Field info displayed for all countries in alpha order.
Constitution-based federal republic; strong democratic tradition

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/us.html
that last one is in CIA WORLD FACT BOOK
look Our government does not acknowledge us as a democracy just says traditions! lets go further to define traditions that
a : an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior (as a religious practice or a social custom) b : a belief or story or a body of beliefs or stories relating to the past that are commonly accepted as historical though not verifiable
2
: the handing down of information, beliefs, and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another without written instruction
3
: cultural continuity in social attitudes, customs, and institutions

If the facts don't fit you must acquit! :D

1. you may be talking about DIRECT democracy! but you have to keep in mind our founding fathers wanted nothing to do with a democracy or "mob rule" everyone disagreed with it Washington, Adams, Benny old Franklyn, even Jefferson! (ok no one knew what Jefferson believed he flipped sides more often the a teter totor at a school playground. )
