Alright, this is probably more geared towards our UK forumites, but I'm asking anyway.

A strange force is coming that will destroy any remaining copies of one of these two programs. Any remaining records of this program will be erased. Any and all videotapes, discs, files, etc. of this program will cease to be. You have the power to save only one.

Which program would you save, Red Dwarf or Doctor Who?

GFY. Let me know when it's a choice between saving Natalie Portman and Scarlet Johanssen... :lol:

And no, I've never really seen either bit of media. You have to be a pretty dedicated american nerd to be big into either red dwarf or doctor who.

Well I was raised on PBS, back when they played these shows with a great frequency.

Pretty much my point exactly.

Besides, I was always the kid that religiously watched the sunday afternoon Godzilla movies on channel 13. Japanese pop culture > British pop culture.

But British comedy is better than Japanese comedy, maybe, I dono, but in my opinion it is. Probably because I can understand English and not the Japanese language.

The Japanese have a lot of ideas with cartoons and shows and that. Like.. Sailor Moon, and Pokemon, and all those other ones.

Never seen Red Dwarf, and the recent series of Doctor Who are actually pretty good, so I voted Doctor Who.

British people make the best comedies, so at least in one aspect we've got the best culture.

Red Dwarf, of course.

Dr. Who I watched as a kid and loved that show. Red Dwarf I've never heard of. So, I'll save Dr. Who. :wink:

Tom Baker was the best. I did used to like Peter Davidson too. And the current guy (forget his name) is also pretty damn good...


Much as I love (the later series of) Red Dwarf, it would have to be Dr Who.

Red Dwarf is funny, but seems a bit too "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" to me. Honestly, I think it's just a some ripping of Douglas Adams' work.

Doctor Who, on the other hand, is brilliant. Although it has a continual badguy, the series always gets turned on its head when Who is reincarnated.


As for the best British Comedy, I would have to argue that Jeeves and Wooster, Fawlty Towers, and Monty Pythons Flying Circus take the cake.

And british comedy rocks, except when people don't understand it. I recommend Johnny Foreigner's Guide to British Humour.

Yes. Red Dwarf, definitely (at least the first six series). It's the perfect antidote to the morally self righteous and utopian self indulgence of Star Trek. I like spaceships where the upgrade from blue alert to red alert means changing the bulb, where the ship's AI is senile, and where every night is curry night (remember the genetic modifier which turned Lister's vindaloo into a raging monster?). It's just a shame that series 7 & 8 were such shite.

I so want to see Monty Python some time. John Cleese in Fawlty Towers is amazing, especially the one with thw moose head, german occupants and goose walk. Thats probably the best episode of anything ever on TV. Anyone here seen My Family? Thats probably my favourite 21st century British comedy so far.

Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You are probably the greatest quiz shows on tv, as they are so satirical, quick and witty (Frankie Boyle pwns).

Another classic British comedy is Yes, Minister. It's so well written and it shows how little politics has changed in the last 25 years.

My favourite recent comedies are the unholy trinity of Chris Morris' work; The Day Today, Brasseye & Jam. (especially Jam, it's so wrong it just has to be right :twisted: )
