maps guides

Postby arizona on Mon Nov 12, 2007 10:38 am

how about foundry folk creating a place where the unenlightened can go to read about the special features, etc. of the maps.

Some maps, like Bamboo Jack or Pearl Harbor, are barely comprehensible. And so you spend a lot of your first game trying desperately to figure out what the designers meant.

Bob is of some help, but man I'd hate to be a newbie without bob trying to decipher this....

wouldn't take much. just a page where the bonuses, etc. are spelled out. fanatics could also provide strategy/pitfall guides...

Not to much farther down on this page: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32474

If you mean maps already released, you could click the thumbnail and see for yourself how complex the map is.
Warning: You may be reading a really old topic.

I mean maps already released. The problem is not seeing how complex a map is, it's understanding how the complex maps work.

Some of them can't be understood without playing.

In Bamboo Jack, for instance, what exactly do you need to control to get a bonus for Rail section 4. Do you need ALL of Thanbyuzayat? Or just the station? etc. After playing it twice, I have a rough feel. But it would have been nice to have a place that spelled it out clearly.

I agree with you Arizona - this could be a good source of information...

In the mean time - most of this info is in the Foundry in the relevant topics...

Or if you like - in the XML...

That's not really that accessible for some people though - especially the newbies.

Being one who creates (some of) these complicated maps of which many are based on history and therefore the battles are more complex than standard risk gameplay, and the fact that these historical maps don't always lend themselves to the standard risk gameplay layout, I would welcome the opportunity to "enlighten" players through some facility of this nature.

I would prefer to see something of this nature devloped along with the map in perhaps the Foundry stage.

For my thoughts, i think that all would be required is a text file (like the xml) that has a link in the play section of each map to the text file so that it is a pop-up that players can click on at any time to view these details.

I would not like to see any tactics included in this facility, as these are something that everyone plays differently and for different reasons at different stages of the game.

Perhaps also another idea is to have a grading system for the maps, whereby for new players maps are gradede easy to difficult, and this would also give new players a chance at "cutting their teeth" STS on the easier maps.

I agree - hence why I agreed with Arizona... I was just saying that until this feature was off the ground - the info is about... if people want to hunt it down.

I really like this idea, you should submit it as an official suggestion Arizona.
I agree about leaving out strategy bits but there are several maps that just put people off because they are difficult to interpret.

in another thread it was suggested that each map have a brief description you can access from the Start A Game or Join A Game pages. This would give narrative description of the map, basic info such as number of territories and special features, and a suggested game size.

Ideally newbies would read these descriptions, and while it may not explain everything about the map it would give you a sense of what you're getting yourself into when you join a game.

Did this go anywhere? Do I need to post it in suggestions?

Or can somebody move the thread there...

i kind of thought that this was what the legends were for. but i can see
how this would be useful. i find that alot of people don't take the time to read the bonuses, etc, and think of the complicated maps as traditional continent maps. anyway, anything that gives people more info, i'm down with!!!-0

p.s.-cairns, remember that time me and cooper were destroying you on
pearl harbor when it was first released, and you missed a turn
to change the game play and close the hole me and cooper were
exploiting to kick your ass? that was cool. damn bombardments!!!
