Clothing style is the only thing I can think of that matters, in which case the answer is clear:

the Minoans.

You really have to hand it to an empire that, when destroying a city, goes so far as to dig up and dump the ground it was built upon into the river!

Haha, yeah, that was a good empire.

Aren't you a history major, or something?

I'm currently studying for a PhD, yeh :D

I'm a medievalist, though, so I guess I should pick an empire from my period of study...

I'm gonna get controversial here:

The Islamic Caliphate (to the extent to which it can be called an Empire, and we are generalising slightly here... I'm taking it very generally.)

The Islamic Golden Age gave rise to immense feats of scholarship, developments of the arts, literature and science as well as philosophical and political thinking. The Muslims, rather than the renaissance Europeans, were the true heirs to ancient Greek intellectualism (indeed, Aristotle is only popular in European thinking through his championing by Arabic scholars). The Islamic empire expanded at a ridiculous speed, tolerated and integrated other cultures to a greater degree than the Mongols (an empire similar in their expansion) and held power for centuries.

I have to agree with you there, Guiscard.

The other day I went to see an expedition at the New South Wales Art Gallery. The expedition was called "The Arts Of Islam", and oh god, they had some pretty fabulous things there. It also told some history of some of the empires that had arisen with Islam, like the Ottoman Empire, and some other ones. It is truly something you have to see.

Jehan, if you read this, I suggest you go see it, and anyone else that's from NSW.

Respecting a belief that extended the way Islam did is not loving, just respecting. It's truly amazing how Muslims moved from Middle East to North Africa & Iberia fast, like how the Buddhist (SP) Mongols swept through Asia and Eastern Europe.

It's kind of weird that Christianity didn't establish a Christian Empire. Well, a said Empire.

Would The Holy Roman Empire in the Germanic states qualify?
