How will they make nuclear weapons? They will have to purchase or steal them. There is no way they could create them without detection.
Pakistan?
The military wield the fist of power in Pakistan and they've been coming down very hard on the 'talibanisation' in their northern regions (the borders with Afghanistan). They're engaged in fighting the militant islamists who move back and forth accross the border and cause unrest in both states. Pakistan seems to want to remain a staunch ally rather than an opponent of those who are waging this 'war' on terror. I strongly doubt Al Quaeda would have any luck obtaining nuclear material from that source.

They're asking for prisoner release. They're not demanding money. Money has been put on the table but this was from the side of the negotiators, not the Taliban. Furthermore, this would never be the kind of money needed to purchase weapons to be used on a mass scale. Hostage taking for prisoner release isn't exactly a new tactic. Look at Palestine for long-running examples.
