What's the greatest tragedy in history?

Postby Honibaz on Tue Jul 31, 2007 3:06 am

I would say that it was World War 2, more total deaths than any other events I know of.

Hmm, the greatest tragedy in history. Thats a tough one. I suppose if you want the most deaths then it would be WWII at 60 million. Of course there have been some dictatorships that have caused almost as many deaths. Mao Zedong was responsible for at least 40 million deaths (The details are sketchy at best), although he did contribute a lot to China as well. Joseph Stalin's records are much clearer though with a definite 43 million. But there was one common factor with all the great tragedies in the world, and could perhaps be the cause of all of them. Humans.

Along with the accompanying book burnings and oppressions, then we have the cultural revolution in China, the great purge in the USSR. Just to name the three best known cases. There are countless others in small countries that noone cares about. Myanmar for example, or what the Khmer Rouge did to Cambodja.

EDIT: damn, fastposted by 16 minutes, screw looking up details!

The purge in the USSR one of the greatest tragedies in history? Give me a break, its nothing compared to the Holocaust, mass genocides in Rwanda etc.

Actually, because of Joseph Stalin's "policies", there were many deaths in USSR at that time.

Not exactly, there were more victims in Asia due to Japanese war crimes such as raping and massacre.

I'm wondering why it's only Human History you are talking about? What about the wiping of the Dinosaurs or the drying upness of the Dead Sea? Those things are more important than any damn mass genocide of Humanity, I'm sure we'll survive if a few million die

I propose two events.

1. The Rape of Nanking. Where Japanese troops raped and murdered nearly 300,000 Chinese people in 6 weeks (i kid you not)

2. The Somme. "The battle is best remembered for its first day, 1 July 1916, on which the British suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 dead — the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army to this day". A pointless loss of life.

Might seem like a minor point, but if it anyone was to blame it was the Japanese rulers fault, not the Japanese people's fault. Whatever the Japanese government/military did it's no justification for killing over a hundred thousand innocent civilians.

Worst tragedy? Humanity's rise to power. EDIT Actually I take that back - AIDS is the worst. In thirty years it has already spread to every corner of the earth.

You can combine the 2.
The reason AIDS has spread is because of the selfishness of humans.

Im talking sense.

Be back after a lot of pain
