In response to the thread about those "people" walking over a stabbing victim to continue shopping, here's one that'll brighten your day.
Good thing we have the 2nd Amendment, otherwise this 71 yr old hero couldn't have saved the day:

Do you think the other customer and the Subway employees are thankful the ex-marine was packin' heat?
I bet they are very thankful.

What bugs me is how they can charge the surviving wannabe robber with murder. Those Floridians sure have some strange laws.

I love how your glorious country never ceases to remind me just how fucked up the world is...

I mean wtf is with allowing a "valid concealed weapons permit" in the first place and then hey lets just give one to an ex-marine who is in his 70s because that demographic just screams stable...

Nothing sweeter than reading about this sort of shit and then realising its kinda ok because you live thousands of miles away from the gun toting sociopaths and that their "concealed weapons permits" aren't worth shit on the streets of blighty.

EDIT: OK there are plenty of things sweeter than that but you get my meaning...

... 70's is not so old, Bertros. You saw his pic? The man doesn't even look his age - looks rather spry, actually.

... You're an ageist.

He is a former Marine who was a member of the helicopter detail that transported Presidents Kennedy and Johnson...

... Transported JFK? Methinks this man had his sh*t together.

Maybe he did but this implys a policy of handing out concealed weapons permits to people of his demographic which, ageist or otherwise, to me don't make much sense.

You'll never convince me otherwise because thankfully I come from a country where there is just no justifcation for letting anyone (some intelligence, police and active forces personel aside) carry concealed weapons...

As far as I'm concerned the US is predominantly a nation of gun obsessed lunatics and everything I see in the news and on the TV just reinforces that opinion...

Usually i find myself on the side of the liberals on this site, but to call this guy a murderer is ignorant (sorry meggy). I have personally known 2 people who were shot and killed in a robbery like this - after they complied and gave the robber their money. I live across the lake from New Orleans, out in the woods, and it's pretty quiet over here, but when i go into the city i'm usually armed. I wouldn't kill someone over material goods of any kind (not to say that i wouldn't hurt them), but if someone pulls a gun on me, i consider my life in danger and will kill them in a heartbeat. I've never killed anyone as a civilian, but have been in situations a number of times where my having a gun prevented violence from occurring. I wish we were as civilized as the Brits over here, but we're not, and most of the bad guys over here have guns - shall we let them have the advantage there?

... I have to admit, for as much as I've always supported the right to bear arms, all those guns are rather spooky.

... I've been away from the US for a decade but will be returning soon. America has a very violent culture compared to most in the developed world.

Lol, I really wish I could say we were very civilised, but lots of things happen here too (just take the terrorist plot that happened the other week, for example). If your country just banned guns altogether gun crime will dramatically be reduced.

Hmm made me think a little there b.k. I see your plight but I don't think meggy is being ignorant. He killed two men; that is murder. When you start to blur the lines, as this case is, you're on a slippery slope. Is it acceptable to shoot dead someone who threatens you with a knife? What if the guns were replicas and there was no 'real' threat to your life?

Several years ago a farmer over here shot a 16 year old burglar in the hallway of his farm. There had been a history of robbery and intimidation against him and it culminated with him taking the life of a child. The right wing lobby in the UK pressured for the murder/manslaughter charges against him to be dropped as it was "self defence", thankfully the courts didn't choose to set that precedent.

Its hard to explain how incomprehensible it is to me that you carry a gun when you go to town. Are you not scared of killing someone by accident? Its far from a land of liberty and freedom if you can't go to the shops without getting tooled up. If it was me I'd sell your guns and move over here where the only thing you need to go shopping is a credit card :)

Thank God there are still people like him willing to use the rights given to him by the constitution. Don't think that the next group of flunkies in that area wanting to rob someplace won't be thinking of the consequence that befell the two robbers.

why ty diddle.

Luns - is some guy's wallet more valuable than a man's life? Bertros is right, it's a slippery slope.
Without Grandpaw's heroics the outcome might have been a few lost dollars and a card-cancelling phone call or two, hopefully followed by arrests and jail time for the crims. Instead there are two dead young men.

First of all, i find meggy to be an extremely intelligent young lady. The fact that she made an ignorant statement does not change my opinion of her - i've made a few myself. Secondly, i make a distinction between murder and self defense - silly me. Threatened with a knife? You mean like the terrorists on the planes with boxcutters? If they had had some southern boys on those planes, who would have killed them with their own boxcutters, would that have been murder? Someone pulled a knife on me once in the lower part of the French Quarter, and he abruptly changed his mind when i pulled my 9mm. If he had not, i would have killed him - would that make me a murderer? As far as liberty and freedom go, how does my having to go armed compromise such? Were the early Americans not free because they carried weapons? And finally, my father taught me how to fire a rifle and a pistol when i was 6 years old * * listens to the sharp gasps from the liberals * *, and i went through the NRA safety course when i was 12. I served with 10th Special Forces 68-70, and i don't foresee my shooting anyone by accident anytime soon.

But that's the point, HC. What actually happened is more important that what might have happened. Debating what could have happened is pointless because it never became reality.

I also reject the redefining of self-defense as murder.

Wow, there's people here actually defending the two criminal thugs.

So if someone wants to rob or harm you in any way, then what you should do is give them your wallet, or submit to their will. Whatever you do, don't defend yourself or the defenseless. Why, if you did that, you might hurt (or in this case, kill) the would be mugger/rapist/murderer.

Anyone who thinks what this man did is wrong is a friggin' coward.......

Nobody here is defending the criminals... They are condemning the actions of the "hero"...

EDIT: I wrote that in a bit of a rush. I'm not condemning the man. I am condemning the culture which permits that to happen.

It's f*cked up that the guy who was shot could be charged with the murder of the other robber.... However i support the old guy's decision...seeing how two armed men were going to have him walk into a bathroom in a fastfood place late at night.
