Plane Puzzle

Postby sully800 on Wed Jul 19, 2006 8:46 pm

A plane is sitting on a giant treadmill. As the pilot pushes the throttle the treadmill matches whatever speed the plane would normally be at on a runway (If the plane would normally be rolling at 150 mph, then the treadmill will go the opposite direction at 150 mph). Will the plane be able to take off?

The plane is set to move in the opposite direction that the treadmill is turning.

I vote that it will take off.

It cant take off because it will be standing still.

If the pilot pushes the throttle, in an attempt to make the plane go 150 mph, then the tread mill counters this by going 150mph, so the plane will stay in the exact same place and it will be going 0 mph.

i'm sorry, but even though some people are as fat as an airplane, they don't make treadmills that wide, sorry to disappoint you

If it doesn't reach a certain altitude than that's not a successful take off.

Planes fly because of lift generated from the air moving past the wings. If the plane is on a treadmill, then basically what you're saying is that the plane is standing still. So the question becomes can a plane take off without moving? The answer to that is no.
