So last year I started playing in a local Poker tournament (no cash, just a fun evening in the pub). I only play when it's at my local, though it runs at a different bar 9or two) each night. Last night I won for the third time in the last six weeks. Quite proud of myself.

In a way those free games are more difficult because people are not losing money, so they will play things you rarely see when there is something to lose.

Very true. Also, because it's a "tournament", i.e. there is only one winner, people tend to bet wildly toward the end of the game so they can go home.

We have Dan Harrington to thank, partially for that. His excellent book first, introduced the opposing style to tightening up towards the end of tournaments, to steal the larger blinds.

I presume it's Texas Hold 'em.

As you are obviously aware, playing opposite of the crowd in either direction is usually quite effective. The added bonus is free roll players don't mind playing way too reckless if they are not playing super tight. Easy to take them out with a decent hand, the downside is when their garbage hole cards make a hand.

I wonder how bad I have gotten, since it's been so long since I have played. Like everything your skills go away when you don't use them.

I have some friends who, post-Sandy, moved from NJ to Florida. I think the hurricanes are chasing them.

They moved to Florida. Are you sure they aren't chasing hurricanes? I mean I'm just saying. If you don't want earthquakes or tornadoes, you may not want to move to Oklahoma. If you don't want Hurricanes...Florida probably isn't the first place you should move.

That's like Israel having a favourite drink called the Holocaust or something.

Yeah, there's a reason why I refuse to move anywhere near those places, and hurricanes are a big reason why.

The humidity is also a big reason.
