Holy shit it was so fucking amazing

I was seriously skeptical about this movie for months and made fun of it and didn't see the point

It was more of a gritty war movie, instead of the corny (a la Jar Jar) space adventure, eh? No Mary Sue's or Hollywood endings either?

That's right. They did have a bit of fan service, in particular a few callbacks to A New Hope, but overall they didn't shy away from making the cost of war apparent.

So this Star Wars veers off into a new style of near-realism (Gareth Edwards fancying almost a war-documentary look) only to be yanked back into the classic product by the end. There are treats here for knowing fans (an astounding digital resurrection or two, a new style of nasty trooper, etc) and some reviewers have been in five-star raptures. In many ways the new Star Wars films are better than the originals, thanks mainly to technical advances, a difference that only becomes fully apparent when you make the mistake of rewatching the classics rather than just remembering them. However, I can only report that I found Rogue One not just a dull but an oppressive experience, being force-fed a corporate product: a film that never comes alive, with none of the characters properly developed, none of the relationships gelling, the very adventure formulaic. You may do better.

To be honest after the last one, and now this, it sure does sound like Disney have Episodes IV-VI on the clipboard and are just going to hit ctrl+v again and again and again...

No one has to take my word for it. My whole point was that everyone experiences movies differently, and the whole concept of movie criticism is kind of pointless. I promise no one that they'll like the movie, I merely made the thread to comment that I did.

I JUS saw the movie Sunday (12/18/16) with my wife and we both enjoyed it. There were some really neat scenes, and we loved the way the movie weaved in certain characters and the plot back to the main story (Episode IV, New Hope, the original Star Wars).

There is scene in that first Episode (IV) where Battle plans to attack the Death Star are being discussed when a woman commander of the Rebel Alliance says (to paraphrase)..."many lives were lost to bring us these Death Star plans,,," and her voice trails off.....like in a spontaneous moment of silence.....

(I don't think she said "these Death Star Schematics...."...or a more technical term.....

A few comments on other posts on this topic:

1) As far as character development: there is NO reason to do so, for reasons that I will not reveal at this point, IN CASE you had NOT yet seen the movie.

2) Yes, the first part of the movie is a bit confusing going from place to place; I think a total of 4 places, but the plot weaves them together well. And most of the movie is like a war documentary, but there are some funny moments and a few references to Episode IV, with the appearance of a few characters and scenes.

3) The documentary part is rather dark and gritty, NOT pleasant, but it is about war (or a rebellion), so.....to be expected, I M O.....

Went last night, I like the force awakens better because it's more "fun" like I feel Star Wars should be but this fits in well.

I like it better than the newer prequal Lucas films. I don't mind the concept, George wanting to make them better for children, I just couldn't stomach Jar Jar Binks, and young adult Anikin was horrible.

Darth Vader in Rogue One is classic Vader. They really should have had more of him in it. I found it interesting that they used two actors to wear the suit. I predict that is so they can just hire anyone for scale and save having to pay more for someone you never see.

My daughter was bummed since everyone on the mission dies. I was not keen on that either.

I loved the blind former temple guard and his friend. I would have liked to see more of them, maybe there will be a back story featuring how they got there and the destruction of the temple.

I think princess Liea was CGA. But I was trying to watch the credits. I missed any reference. I'm going to google but.. any thoughts? The scene was kind of cool. I thought they were going to end with them capturing her as a closer tie in to Episode 4.

I liked it. Not sure if we are going to watch it in the theatre again or wait for it to come out on disk.

If you read the review that I cited, the critic (whom I assume KNOWS something) says that she too was a GCI, as well as Grand Moff Tarkin....the Peter Cushing "Character"....I thought Princess Leia called him "Governor" Tarkin in Episode IV, but I could be wrong, since I am relying on memory.....

I agree that the blind Jedi and his friend are interesting characters: "Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) might be blind, but he's a fierce, lethal warrior, and he delivers a few memorable lines." At least I assume that he is Jedi, since he quotes the line: "I'm one with the Force. The Force is with me."

I thought the end scene with the Princess was appropriate and because we only got a glimpse of her, we (I, at least) was not sure it was a CGI (Computer Graphic Image)......

In the same Forbes review:

"2. CGI Tarkin

Easily the most off-putting moments of the film were the scenes with the CGI version of Grand Moff Tarkin. The actor who originally played Tarkin in the original films, Peter Cushing, passed away in 1994. This would have been a good reason to either A) not include Tarkin in the film (which would have been fine and easy) or B) find some other way to include him that wasn't so glaringly digital. While the special effects are remarkably good, Tarkin still looks fake compared to the real humans around him, fake enough to make his inclusion puzzling.

So how else could Tarkin have showed up in Rogue One? The obvious choice is as a hologram. He could have spoken with Director Krennic remotely in hologram form, which would have distorted him enough to appear much more plausible thanks to the distortion. Or he could only show up briefly at the end to replace Krennic and not have a speaking part at all. Finally, he could have only delivered one short line, not next to other actual human actors, much like the other CGI character in the film, who looked far, far better largely thanks to her isolation and brevity. (I was actually quite impressed with CGI Leia, but could easily see how having more of her would have shattered the illusion.)"
