I don't remember any of those being publicized as much as Keystone. Also, Keystone will be carrying tar sands...the dirtiest form of oil. South Dakota not only has the purest water in the world, but it also homes the largest underground aquifer in the country.

South Dakota also makes ethanol fuel. Maybe we need to focus more on biofuels?

They can move the pipeline over Minnesota. Let them deal with it. Or...why don't they do what they are already doing? Just put it on a train and take it to port? Canadians are smart. They can figure this out without running a pipeline down our throats.

You can say DaGip should've opposed the pipelines in other parts of the world he wasn't familiar with, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The human race is known for its reactive behaviour. DaGip is no exception, neither are you and neither am I. For the record, I've never heard of any of these pipelines before this thread appeared.

I watched a documentary about a group of about 3000 people in central Africa today. They need help. Damn, they need help asap otherwise a lot of their children will die of hunger/thurst. It's awful and there should at least be awareness about the problem.
There are numerous other regions in Africa where the same/even larger problems are dealt with on a daily basis. Mentioning the problems in central Africa doesn't invalidate my point at all, though. Adding extra points to the table makes the problem seem bigger (than it already was).

Hahah, worried about a pipeline through your neighborhood but ignore that the oil is already going through your neighborhood anyway!

The Keystone pipeline isn't going to just move Canadian oil, but also North Dakota oil. All the oil is being moved anyway without the pipeline, moved by rail mostly. A more expensive mode of transportation and more dangerous than a pipeline. The rail moving all the oil is the BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway company) which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway which is owned by Warren Buffett.

In the last year or so there have been at least two derailments which spilled large amounts of oil all over the place. Also, there are about 5 or 6 deaths a year attributed to the railway from auto accidents (which given the total number of Americans killed every day on our roads makes those few deaths meaningless really) which would be avoided by a pipeline.

There are pros and cons with a pipeline but it's funny coming out against the pipeline when there are trains going right through your town carrying the oil that would be carried by the pipeline. Those trains are traveling over tracks that cross over roads, through populated areas and are known to without a doubt on occasion derail resulting in the spillage of oil. The next train derailment could be in your town. I don't hear anyone bitching about those trains clackety clacking through your town even though when there is no question on if another train is going to derail. That's a given, the only questions are when and where the next derailment is going to be. Hey! The next one might be in your town OP!

Either way, the oil is going through your neighborhood. Do you want it going through a pipe through a designated area where spills can be easily contained if they happen or would your rather the oil be put on trains going 30-60 miles an hour where you have idiots every single day ignoring train crossing trying to "beat the train" or drunk train conductors who take a turn too fast and derail their ride and spilling the oil all over the fucking place?

In fact, according to Federal data, more oil was spilling from train derailments in 2013 than the entire four decades before combined. Hahahah! 1.15 million gallons spilled from derailments in 2013 and from 1975-2012 8oo,ooo gallons were spilled.

So yeah, who needs those dirty old pipelines leaking oil all over the place when we can have big old trains falling off the tracks spilling oil all over the place.

Oh, and here is the BSNF railway, you see all those red lines? On every single one of them every single day there are trains a hundred cars long in some cases carrying oil. Each of those cars can hold something like 28,000 or so gallons of oil and on each train there will be 20 to a 100 cars carrying oil.

Most dangerous thing we have here is American frigates with nuclear depth charges on board going through the canal. No biggie.

Oh yeah, and drunken pilots from the Air National Guard base in Lockport used to invade Canadian airspace, overflying our fields and scaring the chickens. I haven't seen them in many years, though. I think some budget cutbacks either closed the base or at least reduced the number of flights.

They're not my fields in North Dakota...I'm from South Dakota. Maybe the oil companies and railroads should have thought about the safety concerns before hand? They wanted to put a refinery in Elkton, SD...but the farmers got a law firm to represent them. They won, and the refinery lost.

You can build your pipeline...it's just not running through South Dakota...sorry.
