‘Judgement Free’ Gym Revokes Membership Of Woman Who Complained About Transgender Woman In The Locker Room

A national gym chain that touts its “non-intimidating” environment revoked a Midland, Mich. woman’s membership, claiming she violated its “No Judgement Zone” policy by telling other gym-goers about an incident in which she believed she encountered a man in the locker room.

Yvette Cormier said she was “stunned and shocked” when she entered the Midland, Mich. Planet Fitness gym’s locker room last Saturday and encountered someone she said looked like a man but who actually self-identifies as a woman.

“He looked like a man. He did not look like a woman,” Cormier told Flint’s WNEM.

“I was blocked, because a man was standing there,” Cormier said. “It freaked me out because, why is a man in here?

A flustered Cormier went to the gym’s front desk staff and told them a man was in the locker room. An attendant informed her the person was not a man, but a transgender woman.

'This is very unprofessional. This is very scary,” said Cormier, who did not know the gym’s policy on the matter at the time.

She then made her concerns known to the gym’s corporate office.

“They told me the same thing, that he was allowed in there because that’s the sex he wants to be,” Cormier said.

Cormier attended the gym Monday through Thursday this week and told other women in the locker room about her encounter. She told WNEM that she then received a phone call from Planet Fitness’ corporate office.

She said she was asked her if she planned to stop talking with others at the gym about the incident in the locker room. When Cormier said she would not she was informed that her membership was revoked.

A statement released by the nationwide workout chain indicates that Cormier was banned because she violated the fitness chain’s “Judgement Free Zone” policy. Planet Fitness’ statement reads:

""Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity. In expressing her concerns about the policy, the member in question exhibited behavior that club management deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled.""

Then there are the transgender people who are discriminated against, like this woman who was harassed here in Hong Kong:

A war of words has broken out over claims by a transgender woman from South America that immigration and customs officers behaved "like animals'' during a body search and mocked her during a nine-hour ordeal at Chek Lap Kok airport.

Hong Kong officials strenuously deny the allegations and insist proper procedures were followed amid initial suspicions about her identity and the reason she arrived here from Taiwan.

On her arrival in Hong Kong on September 16 she claims staff ridiculed her because she was dressed as a woman. She was refused entry because immigration officials could not verify her explanation about the passport with her country's consulate.

Later, two male customs officers took her to a small room to carry out a body search despite her repeated requests for a woman. She says they touched her penis and breasts with their hands, a claim customs officials deny.

"They were animals. I kept asking for a female but they said if I refused [the search] they would deport [me]. When it was over, I was destroyed."

A customs spokesman said: "The passenger had his clothes on during the whole search and customs officers did not touch any sensitive parts of his body."

She was released when officials verified her story.

The woman also claims she was mistreated by staff at Queen Elizabeth Hospital who wrongly diagnosed her as a psychiatric patient on September 30 and put her in restraints.

The hospital says the action was necessary as she was suicidal.

so, the t's and c's of this particular institution are very specifically worded and an obvious selling point to a certain demographic. there are a million other gyms that will segregate based on gender, rather than the more fluid 'gender identity'. what's the big deal? she can have no complaints about having her membership revoked.

language is not being turned upside down. what is slowly changing is the idea that gender is more than physiological construct.

the idea that this is the thin end of the wedge, and that - hey! - before you know it, ever gym in 'MURICAAAA will have a unisex changing room is patently untrue. this particular company seems to cater to (amongst others) what is a tiny fraction of the populace who do not identify as their physiological gender. had it been the case that the person in question had misrepresented their gender identity, then you'd have a point; but as that issue is not in question, you do not.

the wording in the membership application is absolutely cut and dried. there are no shortage of gyms that do not stipulate it, and would no doubt proscribe to the same views on gender you express. as an organisation, they can do as they like; you as a consumer have the same right. don't like it? - go somewhere else.

Planet Fitness is apparently fairly flexible about what gender you state you are and which changing rooms you are therefore allowed to use. If warmonger ran a gym, it sounds like he would not be standing for any of that hippy crap.

So clearly there are different social attitudes towards this sort of thing.

I've been kicked out of Planet Fitness. For allegedly being intimidating. All I was doing was lifting my program. Never said shit to anyone else while I was there.

Its a "judgment free zone" as long as you don't actually try to be in really good shape, or lift heavy weights (which no competitive power lifter would think mine were).

Planning on going to a different one with a couple of buddies and filming it. Will post later.

So people born intersex should get to use both then? Neither? Around 1 in 1000 people are born with ambiguous genitals. In that same vein, many transgender individuals have internal and/or eternal physical circumstances that define their bodies and minds.

Anyways, besides that, what ever happened to encouraging businesses to have the freedom to run themselves how they want? Don't tell me that only applies to the good businesses that close on Sundays like Hobby Lobby or Chic-fil-a.
