"Gay" is no longer taboo in CC

Post by Symmetry »

The powers that be have accepted my suggestion that the word "gay" be no longer taboo from the site. Be careful though, this step in accepting the word means using it wisely. Calling someone "gay", if the other person feels insulted by being called "gay" is a grey area.

It's been many years for the word to be this acceptable here under the rules.

I kinda think this site has made progress. And thanks to the moderating team involved.

Gay should not be considered taboo

Apologies, here's the Suggestion thread:

Gay should not be considered taboo

I'll put it in the title.

I kind of got the impression that mods were a bit reluctant to talk about this.

Is it cc acceptable to ask nicely if symmetry is gay for example?
If it is; is it something new and was that something forbidden before?

From where I come from, it sounds weird that asking if someone is gay would be any different from asking if someone is a homosexual. Mostly because the tolerance here is high and the gay community is glad with the name 'gay', because the word 'homosexual' is simply a too scientific name for something we find normal.

But being from the country with the first gay marriage, I assume I am privileged with our widely spread tolerance towards gays. I think it's a very normal question to ask Symmetry if he's gay (he can say Yes, No, No comment or nothing at all, right?). The world is full of different cultures, though. Everyone has an opinion about everything and a lot of people have an even stronger opinion about homosexuality. So perhaps it might be better to ask him in private in a polite way (ha! like that happens here), just to avoid trouble. But avoiding that trouble, doesn't seem right to me.

It's a difficult discussion, because it's extremely attached to culture. One of my closest muslim friends has a 24/7 feeling of pity for gays, because they won't go to heaven. This friend is really a great guy, but is raised with this idea. He really can't help that, but I can't help but feeling that this idea is ridiculous (because of my culture). And now I feel like some sort of 'free and open mind' for accepting homosexuality, but I'm rather sure it wouldn't be that simple if I was raised in Saudi Arabia.

My conclusion would be that on an international forum there will always have to be some sort of context to take into account, because I might be saying things here I'll get stoned for in one country and embraced in the next. That is an extremely difficult job for a moderator who doesn't even get paid, so I wish ya'll the best of luck.

The word gay never was taboo. It all depended on how it was used.

I'd be ok with you asking me that,

According to the old rules, use of the word "gay" was zero-tolerance.

not true. but i am really happy for your major life accomplishment... i assume i will be reading bumps in this thread for the rest of my life or your life... perhaps we should get CC to sponsor an official day to honour this glorious achievement...-Jésus noir

p.s.-you kind of had it won when the supreme court ruled it was no longer defamatory over 2 years ago... this isn't like ushering in general bigotry guidelines which CC at first resisted.. ahhhh, the good ol' days... the ol' dark ages of CC...

Unless thing have changed in the past few months the word gay never had a zero tolerance. It had zero tolerance as an insult. I stepped down about two months ago so maybe that is when the zero tolerance policy was put in place.

I don't know, perhaps TeeGee and the mod who banned me from chat were wrong. All I know is that my suggestion was implemented.

From what I understand, the current set of mods got a message telling them to no longer treat the word as taboo, though.

So are you gay?
Cause a few years ago i had no doubt about it, then you didn't make the same type of references.
I know it s dumb, but I m just curious given that you created this suggestion. If you are gay, it s quite ironic if you got some sort of forum ban for using the word gay though.

Does it matter? Would you treat my posts in one way if they were from a gay guy, and another if they were from a straight guy?

Well it does change a lot your motivations when it comes to "reintroduce" this word into cc discussions.
And yes, just like any discussion... If for example you are talking about middle eastern politics and you don't know where the guy you are talking to is from or what s his religion.. It would make me treat the opinion of that person differently.
There s a few things you catch when you see the person you are talking to that you can t see in internet discussions.
Bottom line, I don't care if you are gay or not generally speaking, but I m interested to know in regards of this particular suggestion you've helped implementing... And the fact that you got banned for using the word gay.

I appealed that ban, and hopefully changed the mod's attitude toward it. The experience was not a happy one. But I haven't always been the best advocate.

I don't know the details of the ban.

I don't think it should matter either way though.
