CC Dispatch [Issue 117] Hayesez, Whac-a-Mod, and Contests!

Post by Dukasaur »

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends! We have come at last to the 117th running of the CC Dispatch!

Happy Victoria Day to those of us fortunate to live in the former Dominions and enjoy the blessings of the British parliamentary system! And for all those others, I wish that you too may find something to be happy about on this beautiful sunny Victoria Day weekend!

Two Dispatch contests are currently available. You will find Jigs Fantasy Draft in the Platoon Report, and the 9th round of iAmCaffeine's Dispatch Trivia Contest in the Mess Hall. Both of these contests include fabulous prizes, so be sure check them out.

War Games includes updates on the current state of the TPA, our monthly list of tournament winners, and a new article in the Dave's Tips Series!

In Cartography, Seamus76 has returned and has another roundup of maps in development, as well as a description of his very own Ancient Text Technique.

Our Interrogation Room features Hayesez. I'll say no more and let it speak for itself!

Finally, I would like to welcome jak111 to the Dispatch staff. His first article is in the Mess Hall. Also in the Mess Hall, you will find Razorvich's summary of the Live Chat Event during the Easter Celebration.

Community Tab
Spoiler
A new Community tab has been added to the top navigation bar. There was some debate about this for a few days, but most people acknowledge the potentially positive impact of the change, in housing all the different community links under one roof.

The forum remains accessible through the community tab using this link:
Image

In addition, it has this very suave-looking link to the Dispatch:Image

Like many of the new initiatives that BigWham has brought us, this is a work in progress. There will be changes and improvements, so if what you see now isn't quite what you would like to see, just give it a while! There is a lot of potential for that tab to contain quick links to the things you use the most.

A forum link has also been added on the left-nav panel of your game window.
Whac-a-Mod
Spoiler
A date has been announced for this year's Whac-a-Mod event! Here are some highlights:

Image
  • Event is over 7 days, but with a trailing 14 day period for games to finish... i.e. you have to start games within the 7 day window, and finish them 3 weeks from the start date.
  • All Games are 1v1, Poly or Team v Team.
  • Players get issued Play Tokens upon Game Start and Win Tokens upon Game Win
  • Scoring is via Win % (Win Tokens/Play Tokens) with a qualifier of 7 Play Tokens
  • Top 32 gain entry (which will have to be manual) to the Whac-A-Mod Finale Tournament
  • GA for 7 Play Tokens + 2 Win Tokens
  • CA for Top 7 Players (No Teamers, 40 Play Tokens minimum)
  • Green Star for Leader (% ties broken by Play Tokens)
  • Scoreboard will rank players, but also have a Team score. Team score is just for the glory.
We'll see you out there on the field of combat!!!
Use our convenient navigation buttons to get to your favourite section.

Post by DaveH »

Hello friends, and welcome to your favourite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments, and other stuff in the Tournament scene!

We continue to deliver our news staples with iAmCaffeine's April summary of Tournament Winners, my update of TPA happenings in TPA Wrap, and I have also added one of my occasional Tournament Tips which was prompted by a query from BGtheBrain and features fantastic xml coding from MrBenn.

Good Reading and Good Luck!

Just one tournament to complete: "A History of Europe" which was rescued by Swifte.

The running order is: Swifte (6,770 points), dowian2 (5,445), leehar (4,542), uckuki (3,575) and arno30 (3,492) in fifth spot.

TPA 2: Standings
Image The TPA2 spreadsheet will be finalised after the completion of the last tournament as we have now reached the spreadsheet limit of 400,000 cells, so I won't be able to list the remaining tournament results on that spreadsheet, just the scores.

Tournament Tips #53 by DaveH
getting game data from a list of game numbers.
BGtheBrain posted the following query in the Tools and Tips forum:
Would it be possible to make a sheet formula where I could input a game # in column A, then column B would reflect Map Name, Column C would show player x points won/lost for each player?
The only way I know is to copy the game details and paste into Excel where you can then play with the data. However the wonderful MrBenn knows xml inside out and posted a routine which draws out the details directly from the website into Excel. I have added a few minor details into the code to meet BGtheBrain's requirements and the result is a routine that TO's can use to give them most of the data from a list of games. Not satisfied with that, MrBenn has updated and tidied the coding to extract all the data from a given tournament. However, you will have to wait for the next edition to receive that - and there may even be further "tweeks" to come!

The Excel macro routine is as follows:

Code: Select all

Sub SumScores()
'
' Game Nos titles in cell(1A)
' List of game numbers in column A from cell(2A)
'
Call get_cc_gamedata(R)

Range(Cells(2, 5), Cells(R, 5)).Select

            Cells(i + 1, 13).Value = ""
            j = 1
        End If

    Next i

You write in the list of game numbers that you wish to interrogate starting in cell A2.
Image
You run the routine "SumScores" and get the following data written into your spreadsheet:Image
Across the top you get the number of players in the game; the type of game; map name; list of players' names; whether they won or lost; points gained or lost; number of kills; elimination order and the final round number. There is also a summary of the total points won or lost by each player.

Note that the game types are as follows:
"S" = "Standard"; "C" = "Terminator"; "A" = "Assassin"; "P" = "Polymorphic"; "D" = "Doubles"; "T" = "Triples" and "Q"= "Quads".

With many thanks to MrBenn for allowing me to share his complex and powerful code and BGtheBrain for stimulating the creation of a routine that will make TOs' job in summarising tournament points far easier. (I can see complex scoring tournaments coming up!)

Cartographic Survey

Hello 117, it's nice to be home. Speaking of being home, if you don't know by now, one of CC's greatest map makers, and probably the creator of some of your favorite maps, has returned. The ever evolving Dim is back, and in a big way. Not only does he already have Slovakia in BETA, he has dusted off three other amazingly complex and beautiful maps, Knights & Warlocks, Clash of Kings, and Pirates and Merchants.

So take a look below, and head over to the foundry to let the map makers know your thoughts.

And now on with the show.

Antique Text Technique by Seamus76
Spoiler
With the great success and popularity of District of Alaska I have been constantly asked how the text gets it nice antique look. Currently I've been directly folks to the tutorial I put up in the Tools & Guides section, but figured posting it here would help others.

I'm a big fan of antique style maps, and on my latest one, Alaska(http://goo.gl/ckMFE), I used a simple technique on the text to make it look a little more "antique". At least that was the effect I was going for. I use GIMP, but I think most of this can easily be done in PS as well. Any questions just let me know.

Some things I used:
Colors:
I usually don't use pure black as I find it too "new", instead for just about everything including outlines/borders, routes, text, and just general usage I go with HTML color 3f3f3f. Which is just a really dark, dark gray I would say.
The other color I used for this map is HTML color f5f5f0. I'll use this later so sit tight.

Again, this is what I did for Alaska(http://goo.gl/ckMFE), so you can try this and then play around with the basics.

1. Wrote my text using color 3f3f3f
2. Duplicated that text layer
3. With the "duplicate" layer active I went to Colors/Map/Color Exchange
4. Make sure the From Color is the color you used to write the text. So for me the From Color was 3f3f3f
5. For the To Color I used f5f5f0, but again you can play with these colors and see what you come up with
6. Once the colors are set, hit OK
7. With the "duplicate" layer active I changed the Overlay mode to Difference and lowered the Opacity to 45.1 (this is just a number that looked right for me, but change the opacity as you see best)
8. Still on the duplicate layer, I went to Filters/Blur/Gaussian Blur and applied a 1px g-blur.

And there you go. The text should look kind of antique'ish. Usually the issues I ran into were because the From Color was black, or something else other than the color I used, so make sure those colors are the ones you want and used or it won't work right.
And as Alex Berger said, "Maps are the foundation on which adventure is built." Enjoy.

Interrogation Room

Interrogation of Hayesez
Spoiler
Dispatch: Issue 117 features the Interrogation of General Hayesez. Hayesez is one of the quiet ones that you have to watch. Without any great fanfare, he has moved up to the number two position on the scoreboard and is poised for a shot at the Conqueror title.

On behalf of the CC Dispatch, I thank Hayesez for taking the time to answer our question. (As a quick aside, I want to report that he set a new record, returning the questionnaire faster than anyone ever has before.)

Hayesez: OK, holed myself up in my office for a few minutes to bust these out. Seriously, who sends these to someone on a Friday afternoon and asks for them to be done the same day!!!
:D

You went 2-8 in your 1st 10 games: what did you learn in order to start kicking ass?
Interesting…didn’t realize I was 2-8 my first 10 games. I must not have purchased the “stellar dice” app yet.

If you were tested for steroids, would you pass?!?
Not since game 11.

Who is your secret CC crush?
Kinda liking FishyDance here…. seems that in most of our games the teams we play against are not very talkative with their opponents (not that we really initiate as well, but it is fun to have a bit of banter back and forth)…we much enjoyed our games with FishyDance and their team.

If you were to change your name, what would you now choose?
Not really sure…haven’t really thought about it. Hayesez is an old username from college. Last name and then first/middle initials.

What's your favourite colour?
Red. No Yellllooowwww……..Red – If I’m on team 1. Yellow for team 3 trips!

What's your favourite country?
Battle for Iraq.

What's your favourite food?
Gosh…such a broad question! Does beer count?

What is your favorite map?
Tough call here…bounced around a bit lately. Really been enjoying USA 2.1, Stalin, Waterloo (thanks to Armandolas for showing us that one), lately. I like the bigger maps better.

Favorite Conqueror?
Hmm, I don’t really know any of the Conquerors. Played a couple here and there I think. Had a fun Waterloo game against Josko….

How many games do you have going at once?
You know, I have really only been playing team games lately. Got a great group of buddies that I went to high school with 20 years ago, and we really enjoy playing conquer club as a way of staying in touch. We don’t take our games too seriously, and don’t generally have too many going at once… I think that 5 is probably pretty good for us. We recently had 11 going and that seemed to be a bit too many. We don’t use any add-ons (like BOB or any others…if there are any others). Frankly, we don’t even know what those do really – so we track most things in our chat. Five games is probably a good amount.

Do you read the forums?
I don’t really read the forums. I have started more since being asked to do this interrogation. Again, we really just started playing CC in order to stay in touch and relive our high school board game days!

If it's zero degrees outside today and it's supposed to be twice as cold tomorrow, how cold is it going to be?
Half as much as twice the temperature.

What color are telephone poles- true or false?
Tuberculosis

Which of my 4 maps (seamus76) is your favorite, and why? (Tribal War - Florida, Tribal War - Ancient Israel, Three Kingdoms of China, or District of Alaska)
Gotta admit that I have only played Alaska…and I love it. Great combination of auto-deploy and region-based troops.

Why haven't you joined a clan?
Our group has been approached a lot of times about clans. They sound like a lot of fun, but at this time we are still content playing teams here and there and joining some tourneys. We have talked about looking into them in the future. The clans we have been playing against in tourneys have always been friendly and fun to play against.

If you were to join a clan, what kind of criteria would you use to select one?
I’d probably only join if with our group…and if we did decide to join, we would want to join one that enjoys playing, and wants to be very competitive, but isn’t overly concerned about the points. Also one that didn’t have a requirement to play a lot of games at once. CC is a lot of fun for us as we aren’t obsessed with winning.

On average, how many games do you have going at once?
Probably 4 or 5.

What is your favorite overall map?
Tough call here…bounced around a bit lately. Really been enjoying USA 2.1, Stalin, Waterloo (thanks to Armandolas for showing us that one), lately. I like the bigger maps better.

What is your favorite map for quads?
Damn…for quads it is probably Stalin. Maybe USA 2.1. It definitely fluctuates.

What is your favorite map for triples?
Probably Eastern Hemisphere. Although we have really enjoyed Poison Rome the couple of times we played it. Once things calm down at work this summer, I’d like to play some more random maps.

Do you have a fav for doubles?
Probably Battle for Iraq.

What is your biggest challenge associated with CC?
Time. I wish I had more time to play it seriously, but have a job that requires a lot of time…in addition to kids and a wife. I also am pretty impatient. Our team likes to play our games as soon as our turn pops up. We generally play within a couple hours. The LULL (when we have no active turns) is frustrating!

What do you owe your success to?
Great teammates. And being a nerd. And having OCD.

Are you actively aiming for Conqueror or is more of a bi-product of playing with good teams and good strategy?
I had never even really thought about it. Never really looked at the medals or anything. I was mindful of the fact that my score was going up, but score was never something we had really focused on. But in all honesty, now I am 100 points away or so, it is something that would be nice to accomplish. I’m not so naïve to think that it indicates that I’m one of the best on CC…I have played against many players who are better than I am. I have played a limited number of maps and my points are credited to playing with good teammates. So I know that the scores aren’t truly indicating relative ability (like chess scores, perhaps)…..but all of that being said, yeah, think it would be fun to have the top score for a bit.

Do you ever say Veni Vici Vidi's username the correct way around?
What? It is correct the way it is. “I came, I conquered, I saw.” He is a Fog of War expert….

How come you don't use the forums?
Just didn’t really know too much about ‘em. Have been reading more over the past week or two.

Favorite sport?
NFL football…unless you are going to count fishing.

Did you ever played CC games drunk?
Yeah, my teammates don’t generally like it when we do our plays drunk. Those dreaded misclicks!

Did you ever play CC games while smoking sensimilla?
Not me…but I have a feeling I have played games with guys that have….

Stop. Who would cross the Bridge of Death must answer me these questions three, ere the other side he see:
Ask me the questions, bridgekeeper…I’m not afraid!

What... is your name?
First name or last name?

What... is your quest?
Team or individual?

What... is the capital of Assyria?
Well I don’t know that!

Thanks for coordinating this, Dukasaur. I'm sure most of us have no idea how much time and effort people like you put into this thing. I have a great time on CC and sincerely appreciate all of the work that people put in so that we can enjoy it. I look forward to playing more maps and meeting more people!

Thank you very much for your time!
For issue 118, we are preparing the Interrogation of TeeGee. TeeGee is one of our loyal Australian members, holding up that inconvenient end of the clock when the Americans are sound asleep and the Asians haven't woken up yet. Chatter, Discussions Mod, Global Mod, former member of AFOS and recent KORT recruit, member of half a dozen other groups, TeeGee is now Chief Global. That means he's the one who brings the ban hammer down on your head when you misbehave. He's making a list, he's checking it twice, and he damn well knows if you're naughty or nice, so you'd best ask him some entertaining questions in THIS THREAD

Mess Hall

Post by Dukasaur »

We have 3 articles in the Mess Hall. First, we have a roundup of the Live Chat Event that was part of the Easter celebrations on Conquer Club. Is it a bit late? Yes, it is. I must admit the fault is entirely mine. Razorvich sent me the article in plenty of time for Issue 116, but with all the things I am involved in, I misplaced it. I'm sure the delay will not be fatal: there are some very funny lines in there and I think you'd enjoy them regardless of what month you read them in! So, thank you Razorvich, and my apologies for the publication delay.
Here's what I said in live chat terms :D  :-$ :-^ :-D

Second, we have a "first" article. Jak111 has just joined the Dispatch staff and will be anchoring the Mafia desk for the next little while. Please give a very warm welcome to jak111 on his first appearance in this publication!
=D> =D> =D>

Finally, we have the penultimate round in Caff's Dispatch Trivia Contest. Kudos to iAmCaffeine for his work on this project, one of the toughest and most ambitious trivia contests ever deployed on this site. Caff has just won his 3-month GC medal for this contest, and YOU can still win a GA! Yes, that's right. There is still this round and the next to be fought over, and all five top players get GA medals. First place is now out of reach for anyone except Ffraid or Dakky21, but 3rd, 4th, and 5th are still very much in doubt, so get your entries in there!

BUNNIES?... Image ...... or .........Eggs? Image

Hidden around the CC site were a variety of bunnies and eggs, all worth a different value in prize eggs (1 - 5). To get a link to a hidden item, a player had to win a Caption Competition.

Then came the twist......A
GOLDEN EGG has been hidden somewhere....

Go for the easy eggs with a hidden item?...or the
GOLDEN EGG for glory and bulk egg payout?

After the halftime addition of more hidden items, there were three main contenders for the egg dakky21, plurple and Hannibal 19

dakky21, was the first to locate the GOLDEN EGG

BUT FIRST...win a Caption....

The Captions turned out to be a mad 3 minutes of "what the .... is that?..."

TIE!! plurple and KingOfGods ]plurple:I'm not sure what the problem is... but it has got to be in here somewhere
KingOfGods:Looks like the engine is flooding again.

ImageThe race was on... and produced the funniest situation, plurple and dakky21 were online and hunting at the same time...

Mafia Experiments by jak111
Spoiler
For those of you who have not yet joined a single game of Mafia here at ConquerClub. There are a few things you should know about it.
  • It is a giant family. Once you enter the Mafia scene you are part of it. Continue to stick around and you'll meet a bigger part of the family.
  • No matter how much you fight in a game, at the end of the day you are all still friends enjoying a game that you love. (Or hopefully will love soon ;D)
  • Everyone for the most part here are respectful of each other. (Just remember, they will try to provoke reactions to make you slip).
It is a pretty free bunch, as long as you can respect some simple courtesy rules you will find the forum is quite free to your speech, obviously as long as you do not take it to far. To help you in this area if you're unsure, here are a few things to consider.
  • While a game is ongoing, if you are not in it, please do not post in the thread. While you may have something to say, save it until endgame to which all comments are welcome whether you were in the game or outside watching it progress. Let the players have their space for games in progress.
  • If you have questions there is a Mafia Discussions sub-forum. Feel free to ask questions or bring up flavour ideas for future mafia games here. Veterans will be happy to answer questions when they are free.
  • Keep ongoing game chat in the game its self. While yes, it is just a game, it is not fun to spoil it for others.
Edocsil is running a Cyborgs Mafia with no set number of players. It is currently in sign-ups and is not flavour run (Meaning the bad-guys in a lore are not 100% bad-guys in the game, same with the good-guys). Must keep activity up with a post every day or two MINIMUM. Come on in and sign up. Join the growing family of Mafia players.

We are always looking for fresh blood to join the mafia scene and do not be disappointed if you die early in your first few games. There will always be more.

You may even find yourself part of my own little experimental games. Which more so belong in an asylum than in the light of day.

It looks more like the rear end of a dead Holstein. Most likely some KORT-hater infiltrated the Entertainment dept.
