Murder in the Conquer Club [WINNER: Evil Semp]

Post by LittleMao »

Dame Agatha Christie’s bestselling books have been adapted for many media - TV, film, radio, theatre and opera - but until now, not as a CC tournament!! At long last, this omission is rectified, with a fitting tribute to the Queen of Crime.

Settings – all games are auto, sequential, escalating; mixture of standard/terminator/assassin game types.

Number of players: 30 (premium only)

Round 1: Poirot Investigates (30 players) - Complete
Spoiler
Each player will play six standard 6-player games on the maps below, which relate to some of Hercule Poirot’s finest cases:

Map 1 – Orient Express 1883 (Murder on the Orient Express)
Map 2 – Middle East (Murder in Mesopotamia)
Map 3 – Poker Club (Cards on the Table)
Map 4 – Egypt: Lower (Death on the Nile)
Map 5 – 4 Star Meats (Five Little Pigs)
Map 6 – Caribbean Islands (A Caribbean Mystery – you’ll have to be Miss Marple for this one)

The winner of each game will receive 10 points. In addition, in every game there will be a MURDER :o : each player will be the murderer once during the round (30 games will be set up in total - and there are 30 players). They will be told secretly in advance in which game they are the murderer, and who to kill (assigned randomly).

If they successfully kill their target as the first kill of the game, the murderer receives 5 points - or 7 points if the murder is undetected by Poirot (see below). If they do not win the game, they still receive the points. If another player is killed first, they do NOT receive any points.

Meanwhile, the other players are acting as Poirot – at any point before the first death, they can PM me with an accusation of the murderer (based on the gameplay, strategy, game chat). You can only make one accusation per game. Any correct accusation wins you 2 points, regardless of whether the murderer is successful.

At the end of the round, the scores are added up, and the bottom 10 players are eliminated. In the event of a tie, the player are ranked by game victories, then by murder points. Tiebreaker on Orient Express if still tied.

Round 2 – The ABC Murders (20 players) - COMPLETE
Spoiler
An apparently random serial killer is running amok in England, using the alphabet as his guide on who to kill next… each player will play four foggy Terminator games (2 5-player, 2 10-player, randomly assigned), and just as in the book, your mission is to make as many kills as possible before Poirot catches up with you. You get 1 point per kill, and in addition, you will be given murder victims for both 10-player games - if you manage to kill your victim, you get 2 points instead of 1.

The 10 players with the most points after the 4 games advance to the final - tiebreaker is ranking in Round 1.

Map 1 – A is for Alexander’s Empire (5 players) - Complete
Map 2 – B is for British Isles (5 players) - Complete
Map 3 – C is for Cricket (10 players) - Complete
Bonus Map – Napoleonic Europe (10 players) - Complete

Round 3 – And Then There Were None (10 players)
Dame Christie’s most-loved and often-imitated book sees 10 strangers stranded on an island, killed off one by one… and so the remaining 10 players are transported to Island of Doom where they will play a foggy assassin game.

The victim is eliminated, and the remaining 9 players play another foggy assassin game… the remaining 8 players play another foggy assassin game… and so on until 2 players remain for a standard game.

The winner of the round and therefore the tournament is the most successful assassin – the player with the most kills on the island over the 9 games. In the event of a tie, the winner is whoever lasted the longest (e.g. 2 players both made 3 kills – but player 1 survived until the end so wins).

As an Agatha Christie fan, I have to say this may be the coolest tournament idea I've seen. In please.

I love the concept but i don't love that the t.o. is just along for the ride. One player in some of our games will have a completely different agenda than the rest of us. I think it's classy of you as a t.o. to provide this unique opportunity at the expense of accepting a disadvantage that virtually eliminates you, but i'd much rather see a neutral person not in the tourney receive the pm's and when you are finished your round, you can then have them forwarded to you so you can still manage the tourney. That way you are an equal participant.

Having said all of that, my concern wasn't a selfish one so i'm in unconditionally with much appreciation for your efforts.

I love tournaments with creative themes!

However, I do think that in tournaments with secret PMs and stuff, the organiser should not play. Even though you're disqualifying yourself from Poirot Points, there's still a conflict of interest there. You could effectively control who gets in the final by carefully manipulating who gets what target in their letter during the first round.

I think I would love to play in this, but I hope you decide to recuse yourself.

Fair points stealth/Dukasaur - I honestly wouldn't be petty enough to try and manipulate the "murders" or let my knowledge affect my own turns, but I can see it adds an unnecessary concern for other players. I'll drop out, will be enough fun to organise...
