CC Dispatch [Issue 110 07-01-14] Wham Questions Answered!

Welcome Comrades to the year 2014 and the 110th edition of the Dispatch :)

Our 8th Anniversary has come and gone. 8 years old, the Club Conquête now is! Venerable! Ancient!
Image
Okay, shut me up while there's still time...:)

As always, Battle Royales were included in the Anniversary celebration. There were a total of 263 speed games on the weekend. 856 unique players participated (or about seven percent of the membership) and each player that participated played an average of 7.87 games.

For the second time, casual BRs were created after the speed BRs. Casual BRs are continuing to be created today. Check the link here to see if there are any still available when you receive this.

Casual BRs are, to me, a real sign of CCs evolution. I remember in 2011, during the 5th Anniversary celebration, when there were maybe two or three of us asking for sequential BRs, (link) and the rest of us were telling us that we were basically idiots, that casual BRs could never work. Then, after much pushing and prodding, Game 10000000 was made sequential and casual, and proved that the concept works. Incredibly, after that sequential BRs were still snubbed in the 6th Anniversary. I had this to say about it! During the 7th Anniversary, a handful of sequential BRs were created, but now, in the 8th Anniversary, we finally have casual BRs, both sequential and freestyle, and in sufficient numbers created over a sufficient time span to allow everyone a shot at them. Thank you, blake!

Here's what we have on tap for you:

The first regular section is Mess Hall and Interrogation Room, which includes the long-awaited Interrogation of BigWham!. It also includes the next installment of IAmCaffeine's Dispatch Trivia Contest.

The Platoon Report covers all aspects of the Clan scene.

War Games brings you all the latest from the Tournament world, including TPA updates!

Finally, our Next Mission Brief includes such things as the closing credits and information on how to subscribe.

Dukasaur - Chief Executive

And finally some late-breaking news:
Late-breaking News and Announcements
Spoiler
Here's what's new since the last issue of the Dispatch:
  • On December 16th, sempaispellcheck unveiled the Official Passport Challenge: Year in Review 2013. 2013 is quite likely the most eventful year in CC's history. After many years of lackattack's ownership, and the brief interregnum of El_Jefe, we now have an activist owner. We've seen the departure of many important and famous names, we've seen an incredible number of changes (not just minor new options like Zombie spoils and Parachute reinforcements but some really radical new play options such as Polymorphic games and Bot games.

The Year in Review Passport Challenge tried to encapsulate all that, and I think it succeeded brilliantly!
  • The Passport Challenge was sempai's last official event as head of the Entertainment Team. He has stepped down (although he continues to run many events) and the Entertainment Team has been absorbed into the new Community Team, run (provisionally) by BigWham himself.
  • There is a new challenge up in DoomYoshi's Monthly Challenge series.
  • The last update of 2013 brought many small changes, and one very big one. The new Panel-based interface has begun the task of integrating into the basic UI many features that were previously available to BOB users. Not all of the BOB functions have been integrated yet, but work is continuing. Meanwhile, if you have difficulty arranging those tricky new panels, check out Foxglove's tutorial.

Newbie Help

Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information, Mafia and You, and Rules and Terms of Mafia.
Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you.

What is "Mafia"?
Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.

Mafia News
During the holidays, the mafia forum activity tends to dip. Although we have no new games, some games have stalled as mods have been away on vacation or break. Hopefully the new year will bring everyone back to the games.

Mafia Callouts
Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling:

Sign-ups:
No games are currently in sign-ups.

Seeking Replacements:
Consult the Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements.

Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=213

Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5
We talk about another open setup this issue.

Rebels in the Palace

What is It?
Rebels in the Palace is an open setup for 12 players. 8 players are Rebels who win if the king is killed. 3 players are guards who know who the king is but not who the other guards are. They win if they and the king equal or outnumber the remaining rebels. 1 player is the King who does not know who anyone is.

Example
There are 7 players left in the game, 2 Guards, 4 Rebels, and 1 King. If a Rebel is lynched, the Guards and King win. If a Guard is lynched, the game continues. If the King is lynched, the Rebels win.

How to Play this Setup
There are no nightkills or actions, so this is essentially a nightless game. Guards and the King will most likely claim Rebel upon lynch pressure, so the game really comes down to proper post analysis.

Interrogation of bigWham
Q. Which banned member of CC are you, anyway?

Getting banned is way too much work for me.

Q. When will you be changing the log on page/front page?

I think the log on the front page has been improved.

Q. How big is your wham?

Only slightly smaller than infinitely large.

Q. Do like the band Wham?

While I would say that, in the pantheon of Whams, I consider them somewhat of a moistWham, that

does not stop me moving lithely to their glossy dance beats until the small hours of yesterday.

Q. On a scale of 1 being worst and 10 being best, rate the following:
Ham
Scam
Spam
Dam
Abraham
Wigwam
Tram
Ram
Pram

Ham - 5
Scam - 5
Spam - 5
Dam - 5
Abraham - 6
Wigwam - 8
Tram - 5
Ram - 7
Pram - 5

"Wigam" is clearing the standout word here, though "Ram" does hold its own. As Dr. Seuss recognized, it's pretty hard to go below a 5/10 when you're ending with an AM.

Q. Ass or breast man?

Fascinating, unexpected options... but these days elbows are really more my thing.

Q. Why did you choose to spend money on CC instead of building your own from scratch?

Building things from scratch is not difficult. Capturing the magic that is in CC might just be

impossible. Also: time is money.

Q. Why have the forums died so much? Do you think removing perma bans would help, or is it too
late?

The forums have fallen off as the website has, but perhaps more so. As always, there is not

just one simple reason for this. We have put in place an appeal process for perma bans, so it

is possible to have them removed, however this is only a very small part of the puzzle.

Fundamentally we need to create a more vibrant environment, and that is something we are

working on. We have a new team called Community, that I am leading, and additionally we are

evolving the role of the Discussions Team specifically based around generating more life on the

forum.

Q. When are you giving the chat moderators a raise?

It's just a question of working out what the % should be.

Q. Is there a Mrs Wham, do you have any little Whams?

You are all my little Whams, and some of you are my Mrs Whams ;)

Q. Is your name inspired by the greatest movie of all time?

If it is I am unaware of it, and I suspect this is probably a good thing.

Q. Can you describe a life in the day of wham?

Arise at midnight shaking my fists at the air. Code like a space monkey. Skim the surface of

some very deep thoughts. Make obtuse comments to random team member. Praise the Conquer Gods

that everyone on CC is perfectly content and has no issues. Deal with issues. Cause Issues.

Brainstorm new ideas for issue-causing. Tickle bugs on the chin. Drink 2 coffees at once. Enter

the room of invisible mirrors. Dream of human androids. Practice fancy hat wearing. 17 hours

more coding. Get in and about. Connect to the outertube. Laugh at the cover of a book. Skip

breakfast, lunch and dinner. Greet myself in the long, sultry hallway of my heart. Kablooie.

Blam! Watch out! Arise at midnight shaking my fists at the air.

Q. Are you glad blake is around?

Yes.

Q. What was the biggest event in the past year on CC?

The event we are having right now for our 8th Anniversary is pretty big!

Q. Which implemented suggestion made you want to be a player the most?

The Championships, because I have explicitly excluded myself from participating.

Q. Who do you like more, blake or king A?

C'mon, who could not like KA more? I like KA more than myself! blake has other redeeming

qualities ;)

Q. Are you a Leader or Micro manager?

A Micro Leader!

Q. Do you trust your volunteers?

With my sacred scrolls and magic scepters of holistic granditude? No. With the fine work they

do throughout the community? Yes!

Q. Will the site ever replace BMO with a new community manager?

Absolutely possibly! Community is a critical part of our experience and something that will be

a focus of mine the first part of this year. I am involving myself by taking leadership of the

Community Team. After I have worked out what is happening, and needs to happen, then we will

evolve from there.

Q. With the slew of updates we have been getting since your arrival =D> , when do you think

enough will be enough?

I assure you that too many updates are barely enough

Q. Do you regret any decision you have taken since becoming the boss man?

If I didn't regret any decisions, then I would not be making enough decisions.

Q. Can we get some xml updates soon so the site can have some new types of maps?

Yes! Along with Community, this is another major focus for the first part of this year. We are

working towards what I believe will be a very exciting time for map-making and the community of

players that are looking for new playing experiences. Let me just say that we want to be

producing more than maps that look fantastic, but play like many other maps we already have.

Q. Do you wish Ace Rimmer would come up with a new question other than arse or breasts?

I agree that the brain of Ace Rimmer warrants closer investigation with some type of razor

sharp cutting device.

Q. Speaking of body parts, what floats your boat more: Thorax or Coccyx?

Any body part that ends with x is not to be trifled with. I am imagining my boat floating

around on a sea of body parts however, and wondering what type of voyage I am on here.

Q. Have you owned a business or website before?

Yes and yes

Q. What are your plans for attracting more players to CC?

We have been putting building blocks in place. The challenges with new players are often very

different, if not the exact opposite, of those for existing players. We have done some things,

and there are more in the pipeline. The previous, much reviled, home page resulted in an

immediate, and significant, increase in new player signups. Hopefully the current one will

continue that trend... but we need to work through the entire new player process to ultimately

get the results we need. For one thing, much of the website needs to be refreshed to make us

competitive with the vast world of gaming options that are available now,and it needs to work

on mobile devices. These are big tasks that unfortunately have no direct, immediate benefit to

existing members.

Q. What are your plans for retaining players? Shouldn't there be some sort of loyalty bonus for

premium? I must have had premium/had it bought for me many times since I registered, yet no

incentive to buy again? Free stuff after x amount of years?

I would hope CC's premium membership provides good value on its own merits. However, this is an

idea that may have a natural mechanism for implementation soon (*tease*).

Q. Who do you think you are?

The It Girl on everyone's wiggling tongues.

Q. What do you want?

As an interviewee all I long for is substantive questions.

Q. What's the story behind rds not being community manager anymore?

RDS just did not have time to fully put into the role.

Q. Will you play me (smegal69) at a game of No limit Hold em poker....... If I will I get CC

and if you win you can take my wife?

I presume your wife owns something better than CC? Not sure what that would be though...

Q. What portion of updates are done by you? Blake?

All portions of updates are done by a room full of highly strung Mountain Goats.

Q. What about bug fixes? (prevents are fine)

We are moving to a more streamlined bug process that blake is leading.

Q. Do you hire coders / designers or do you do everything yourself?

I hire coders, but that is largely to afford me massages and various related services.

Q. Why do you allow teenage "staff" to treat paying customers who embarrass them in fora to

vacations(not delivering what they payed for), meanwhile account sharing and blatant cheating

is allowed. How is saying treated worse than doing?

Due to the sprawling metaphysical nature of this highly practical question I am not sure where

to begin exactly, but probably the max age cap of 19 I placed on all volunteer positions may be

having an impact here.

Q. Do you think a primary clause and a subordinate clause should be cast in the same tense?

All clauses should be blurted out in one word.

Q. On a more serious note: Triple Sec or Grand Marnier?

I will apply the logical OR here, meaning both, since I always take those drinks together.

Q. Do you wake up excited about the next thing you are going to try on CC or tired of being

late trying to fix something on CC?

Both, of course!

Q. How many lines of original conquer club code have you rewritten?

Many 1000s. 10s of 1000s in fact. When I jump on those mountain goats and start smashing my

fingers up and down the code just flows forth.

Q. How long until clans will get a sitter function?

Not to answer the question, but I can say that it is something that is being actively worked

on!

Q. Can you distill your basic philosophy of life into a single paragraph?

(And obviously, what is it?)

1. Do what you say. 2. Do something great.

Q. Anything you care to share with us at this point about what you have done, are doing, and

will do?

It's rolling out before you, and will continue to do so.

Q. Any time frame for incorporating the useful add ons that have been broken into the site?

Clickies(don't even try and suggest site has clickies, not near as user friendly)
Map rank
Bob

You already collect the data for medal stats, so wouldn't be a stretch to rejig things for map

rank for example.

Well, I would have preferred to integrate Bob a few weeks ago with the new panel interface, but

I thought that if I did that then people probably wouldn't appreciate it, wouldn't notice it,

and would then get very upset and demand to know when Bob would be integrated! In that

approximate order. So, maybe we will do something like this with Clickies and Map Rank as well.

(Sigh!)

Q. Do you think banning people for offering frank feedback is sustainable? People that take the

time to complain and suggest, are doing so because they are interested in continuing on site.

Something I (BoganGod) would think your trying to encourage.

It would be sustainable if this was a Banning Website, a great idea who's time is sure to come.

Having said it, sometimes the unenlightened can confuse 'frank feedback' with 'obnoxious piffle

that has little to no redeeming value'. In these situations it is worth considering whether one

truly wants to make a legitimate point, and if so whether it is worth adapting one's

communication style to the situation.

Q. Can you tell us more about the girl who inspired sassbot? A CC female player from the early

days?

I prefer to keep my private life, private! Thank you!

Q. When did you decide that you were going to buy cc from el jefe? Are you guys real life

acquaintances which led to this fast takeover?

This took some time in fact, and we were not acquaintances.

Q. When can we expect to start getting medals for 'defeating unique opponents while using the

new Game Panel'?

Hmmmm!

Q. Eric - token or butters?

the dude on crutches? i don't know eric, but we do need more of those dudes on crutches around

the place.

Q. When will #1_stunna get interviewed? (It's what we all are really hanging out for)

While I am not told who asks these questions, sometimes I get a premonition.

Q. How come there is no rank minimum for mods? Like some where ABOVE cadet.. They should at

least be able to play this site..

To the Suggestions forum you go!

Q. What is your favorite liquor?

Liquor is for liquaholics

Q. What is your favorite NHL team?

The Los Angeles TwinkleBottoms

Q. What do you think of Serbia's bollocks?

It's the ultimate in cultural thievery!

Q. Where's the most interesting place you've ever visited?

A geographic place? Mexico City. A real place? http://www.conquerclub.com.

Q. What kind of games do you play besides Conquer Club?

Board games, video games, card games, dice games. I-don't-have-time-for-games-but-I-have-to-

play-them-to-keep-up-with-the-latest-games games.

Q. What kind of car do you drive?

A spacetime traveling unicycle. With the sports upgrade.

Q. Is there a Mrs. Wham? Any Little Whamsters or Whamettes?

Just me, the bots, a harem of administrators, and a menagerie of floppy-headed squawkeninnies.

Q. Dogs or cats?

Dogs are surely man's most annoying friend.

Q. If you knew the precise date and time of your death, what would you do on your last day?

Rebirth myself.

Q. Who's your favourite author?

Clock McCannister

Q. Who's your favourite movie director?

Jasper Zipline

Q. If you could go back in time and be the bombardier on the Enola Gay, would you drop the

bomb?

Yes, but I would fill it with pamphlets saying "8:15 - Hi! We could have a dropped an atomic

bomb right here but we decided to send this note instead. You might like to think about pulling

back on the global domination stuff a bit. We have plans for Pearl Harbor including a night

club with a Sushi bar on the dancefloor! Kisses, Enola Gay (my plane, not my mom, she sends

kisses too and hopes they never, ever fade away)"

Q. What's your favourite Saturday Night Live sketch?

Not sure... are they meant to be funny? This always confused me. Sometimes they seemed like

they were edging in that direction, then at other times it seemed more likely that they were an

advertisement for a local street theater performance.

Q. Do you root for the Coyote, or the Roadrunner?

The Coyote needs to get his stuff together to be rootable.

Q. What's the single biggest sign that the End Times Are Near?

A lack of discussion of the end times would seem very ominous.

CC4 Update by IcePack
Spoiler
The Final 8
KORT vs OSA: 32-26 KORT WINS
Image VS Image
KORT has taken the war for the second time against OSA in a Clan Cup match up! Both times, OSA has proved themselves excellent opponents against one of CC's top clans. In the end, the cow's grazing in the pasture just were four steps ahead of OSA's one, and OSA just couldn't keep up. KORT will move onto face the winner of the IA & TSM war.
Final Result: KORT Advances
IcePack Predicts: KORT Advances

IA vs TSM: 11-18
Image VS Image
The TSM vs IA battle continues, as TSM keeps their slight lead over IA that we had last time we checked in with them. Proving both to be solid opponents, there is still plenty of room for either one to take this match up. As they get closer and closer to the 31 wins needed for the war, I get more and more nervous about my prediction of IA taking it home! :-s
Final Result:
IcePack Predicts: IA Advances
------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOFU vs ATL: 19-`14
Image VS Image
TOFU and ATL have a sig battle going on, as a secondary battle to the real war. A very colorful thread to peruse, if you find yourself with some time to burn and want a few good chuckles. ATL has kept up with TOFU step for step until just recently, where TOFU has picked up a slight lead. All three batches are out, and its about time for results to start coming in. Expect to see this one continue to remain close, although I still believe TOFU will advance even though ATL should keep it close.
Final Result:
IcePack Predicts: TOFU Advances

ACE vs LOW: 37-21 ACE WINS
Image VS Image
ACE has officially won the war, even though LOW picked up numerous wins since the last update here at the dispatch. In the end, ACE will pick up several positions from this resounding victory over one of CC's top ranked clans. Final score should be approximately 38-23. ACE moves onto face the winner of the TOFU & ATL battle.
Final Result: ACE Advances
IcePack Predicts: ACE Advances

3rd Annual 1 vs 1 Final 4 Update by IcePack
Spoiler
Intro
In 2011, barterer2002 created the first annual 1 vs 1 Clan Challenge Event. That first year, 12 clans participated to vie for the only 1 vs 1 Clan Crown! EMPIRE walked away with the win. The next year, barterer2002 had moved onto greener pastures, not before allowing me to run the Second Edition in hopes it would keep the 1 vs 1 Clan Competition alive. That year, 18 clans participated and tried to unseat the 2011 Champion! KORT met EMPIRE on the battlefield, and when the dust settled EMPIRE walked away with a second title.

Now in its third year, 20 Clans have joined to converge on the 1 vs 1 Battlefield for the coveted title. EMPIRE has since merged with AOC, and re-emerged as ACE. Not surprisingly, they have continued to show their strength on the battlefield as we make our way to the finale of the 2013 event.

The Journey
As the holiday break wraps up, we now enter the semi-final round of competition. Here is a breakdown of each clan, and their journey to the Final 4!

The Fallen (FALL) - 2nd Seed: A surprise choice as the #2 seed (over the past two time champion ACE), the Fallen previously only entered the competition once where they were knocked out 24-17 by Manifest Destiny in the first round. Determined to have a better showing, FALL called an audible and placed a new Minister of War in charge of this event. The results have met expectations, as they beat 18th seed VVV 27-14 to advance out of the first round. In the second round, FALL faced off versus 7th seed PIG Renters in a battle that saw FALL emerge victorious, 23-18. FALL now advances to the Final 4 for the first time, in their biggest challenge yet.

Imperial Dragoons (ID) - 3rd Seed: A strong opponent in every 1 vs 1 Clan Challenge to date, ID has made the Semi-Finals every year only being knocked out by the likes of KORT and EMP. This year, they look to make it to the Finals for the first time. ID beat 14th Seeded Headless Horsemen 25-16 in the first round. They then faced 6th seeded Otpasni and easily reached the 21 win mark. ID now advances to the Final 4 for the third time in three years. Time to find out if third times the charm!

Agents of the Chaotic Empire (ACE) - 4th Seed: As a clan that's been here before, they know the task at hand isn't easy. They've fought and won against the best 1 vs 1 Clan's have had to throw at them. This year, ACE outplayed 13th seed LEG 22-19 in their first round. Next they faced 12th seed, and tough past competitor in the 1 vs 1 Series Manifest Destiny. In a very quietly fought match, ACE advanced in yet another 21-20 finish (one of many we have seen over the course of the 3 years). Both of their series were closely won, and now they will face possibly the biggest challenge they've faced to date.

The New Crusade (TNC) - 8th Seed: As a clan that's participated in both previous events, they certainly have the experience required to come into the battlefield and butt heads with the best. Last year, their clan made it to the Final 8 where they suffered a loss from the Imperial Dragoons, another one of our Final 4 this year.
This year, TNC first met up against a tough new clan, Atlantis (ATL) which have really been dominant on the team game side of clan competition since they joined. TNC dominated at home and away going 26-15 overall in order to advance. Next, in a match up against #1 seeded KORT they fought hard in a match very few would have given them much of a chance on. In a match that came down to the very last set, and one Game 13613196 hard fought Middle Ages game, TNC earned their right to advance.

The Semi Finals
Both matches will start their first round on Jan 16th, 2014!

ACE (4) vs TNC (8) -
Image VS Image
In an assumed ACE vs KORT rematch of last year, everyone was surprised when TNC advanced. By far the toughest journey out of the Final 4, TNC now go head to head versus the last two year, reigning champion Agents of the Chaotic Empire (ACE). A surprise 4th place seed for ACE gave them a reason to show their muscle yet again and prove to the clan world they are the 1 vs 1 Champion of Conquer Club. TNC had a tough road to get here, the furthest they've been in this competition in any years prior. This match up could easily determine who may be the winner of the event! If anyone's up to the task of unseating the past champion, I think TNC could pull it off.

FALL (2) vs ID (3) -
Image VS Image
In what is sure to be a hotly contested semi-final, FALL and ID go head to head right around the same time they plan to face off in a regular team war. While FALL is the higher seeded clan, ID surely has the stronger history coming into the match up. Either way, both of them will have their work cut out for them when one of them advances to the finals and faces ACE or TNC. Both clans had similar paths to get to the final four, and similar results. It will be interesting to see which clan manages to pull ahead, and how close of a match up it will be! I might be biased, but I'm here to cheer for the Fallen going to the Finals ;).

Hello friends, and welcome to your favourite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments, and other stuff in the Tournament scene!

In the first issue of 2014, our writers continue to deliver their news staples with mcshanester29's latest MTTO Interview with myself, DaveH's update of TPA happenings in TPA Wrap, and my selection of tournaments awaiting signups in Join This? Or Not!

Have a blessed year ahead!

Meet the Tournament Organizers: anamainiacks by mcshanester29
Spoiler
1. So how did you come up with your username and avatar? Something that you would like to tell us about you in real life....moonlight as a clown? took mime school?

Haha, I'm afraid the answer to that isn't very spectacular. As most people have guessed, my username is a gross misspelling of the cartoon, 'Animaniacs'. I never actually watched the cartoon, but I had vague memories of it because my siblings kept singing one of their Christmas carol parodies. So when I first created an account on another game site, this was my attempt at spelling it using phonics. I've used the same username on game sites ever since. The avatar is just an image I found while Googling the cartoon.

Hmm, something about myself. Well I don't know about clowning or miming (where did you even get these? lol), but I did do theatre for a while. Absolutely loved it. I'm 20 and come from the tiny Asian country called Singapore. Americans spell weirdly. What blackhole is eating all your U's and replacing S's with Z's! 8-[

2. How did you get started organizing tournaments? What was your 1st tournament that you organized? Was it a good experience?

I first stumbled on the Tournament forum close to a year after I first joined CC. I had a great experience playing in my first tournament (because placing 2nd in your first tournament makes you thirst for more), and that got me hooked onto the tournament scene. And call me weird, but I quite enjoy doing administrative work and coordinating events, so it wasn't long before I decided to try dabbling into organising tournaments myself.

My first tournament that I organised was the United Nations CC Conference. The idea was birthed when my school was making us do one of those Model United Nations stuff, so I basically brought the entire thing onto CC. Yea it was a good experience - everything went smoothly, some people deadbeated but I managed to get reserves in easily, and there weren't any complaints.

3. What has been your favorite tournament that you have organized so far? What has been your least favorite?

My favourite would probably be Broadway, Your Way [TPA]. I managed to infuse my love for the theatre into a tournament, and it felt good :P . Yea, a bit of a theatre geek, so.. :geek: . I also really enjoyed TO; Capture the Flag War of the Triple Alliance Edition. I didn't come up with this, but the idea was really, really neat - major props to Sir. Ricco for thinking up such an amazing format. I had a great time coming up with a nice way to present the tournament results along the way as well, because I didn't quite like the standard format we were given to use.

The least favourite would have to be a toss-up between Last Man Standing and Around the World in 8 Maps, which is currently still ongoing. Both of these had gameplay components that didn't quite work out the way I envisioned it, so it was disappointing in that sense. I won't go into details, because that'd mean you'd have to look at the gameplay of these tournaments in the first place. I'm deciding whether I can come up with a better version of the latter with a smaller player pool and some tweaks to the rules, though.

4. You have been a big help in rescuing tournaments, what are some tips that you might have for those TO's wanting to rescue? Did you have a tournament that you really enjoyed rescuing?

Hmmm, there's really so much I'd like to say, but to condense it into a few points:
  1. Make sure you have enough time to rescue the tournament. The only thing more annoying than having a tournament you're playing in be abandoned, is to have it be abandoned twice. If you aren't going to be as free, look to rescue only those tournaments that are in their final stages.
  2. If any rules such as tiebreakers aren't clearly stated in the original TO's first post, look through the previous games in the tournament to see what was done in such scenarios, or ask the remaining players what the solution was. Ask the original TO too, if he's available (i.e. he didn't leave the site/take a hiatus).
  3. If you need to include new rules or modify existing rules, consult the original TO (if possible) out of courtesy, and make sure the tournament players are agreeable to the change. At the end of the day, you're still just stepping in to help see someone else's tournament to the end, and so it's best to ensure that your rule modifications do not go against the vision of the original TO, and why the players signed up for the tournament.
My favourite tournament rescue is probably The King is Dead. It was the most annoying while I was still running it, because it was dragging on for a ridiculously long time, but I felt really accomplished when it finally ended, because it was such an elaborate tournament to have to run. I modified the rules and added clauses in some places along the way, because the way the tournament was structured was such that it could really go on infinitely. I did feel that the changes still kept the essence and heart of the tournament, and were changes that the players were more than happy to have. I mean, let's be honest, when a tournament runs on for 2 years, everyone kinda wants it to end.

5. What is your favorite map/settings? Team or singles?

I love Brazil, Classic and San Francisco for Standard games; Dawn of Ages, Feudal War and Treasure of Galapagos for 1v1s; and 8 Thoughts and Chinese Checkers for team games. In terms of settings, I'm pretty old school, so I still haven't touched the stuff like Trench, Parachute and Zombie. I wouldn't actively search for games with Manual or Nuclear either. I'm fine with most other settings, though I absolutely hate Adjacent forts, and tend to favour Escalating or No Spoils. It depends heavily on the map I'm playing on, I guess.

I generally find Singles more exciting than Team games, since the friendly to enemy troops ratio is vastly different, but I prefer to keep to Team games for now, since I'm pretty busy with life. Singles requires you to come up with your entire strategy, whereas in Team games, there's more brainstorming and bouncing ideas off each other. So that's especially helpful when I'm really busy and have to pop in, quickly take my turns, and get out. Of course that's only possible when you have teammates that are communicative, so I'm glad to be part of an awesome clan with people who do just that (: G1 ftw!

6. Do you have any regular team mates that you play in tournaments with?

Pretty much anyone in my clan who's willing and able. Did I mention I'm in an insanely amazing clan with the best community of players? Yep, I used to team up with amazzony pretty often.

7. What are you favorite kinds of tournaments to organize?

I'd say tournaments with a theme or cool gameplay format are my favourite to organise. Right from the time the seed of the idea is planted to the time you actually create the tournament thread asking for players, it's just so much fun to plan out the entire idea and let your creative juices flow. I personally don't get much of a thrill organising those tournaments without so much of a premise other than to have a competition, because well, anyone with time on their hands can come up with one of those. (Though I fully understand there's a place for these in the tournament scene.) Creating a storyline based on the maps CC has to offer, or coming up with/integrating new methods of progression/elimination from the tournament just create that much more a sense of ownership and pride over the tournaments you organise. It really adds a whole new dimension to the tournament, that I believes spills over to the participants of the tournament as well, to a certain extent. Certainly there'll be hits and misses, but it's still a lot more fun when you switch it up.

8. With a great 68 tournaments completed you also have 4 tournament wins, which tournament was your first win? Do you still enjoy playing in tournaments?

Heh, quite a large disparity in the numbers eh... My first win was Beta Dubs [TPA], which I won with amazzony. I was immensely surprised by the tournament win, to be honest. We just joined the tournament for some fun, and hopefully get a feel of some of the new maps. Never did we expect to take it all! It felt great to share my first tournament win with someone else, and it just broke the dry spell of tournament wins for me, with 2 more coming in that same month.

Well the last tournament I joined was last year's [Offical] 12 Days of Christmas tournament... so you can probably tell, it's been a long while since I last joined a tournament. I had to cut back on my games since last year, because of developments in real life, so I've been focusing more on playing clan games and organising tournaments. I guess I could let you know if I still enjoy playing tournaments when I eventually do join another one... I did thoroughly enjoy the aforementioned Christmas one though!

9. What is something that you would like to see improve on CC in regards to tournaments?

Technical-wise, I'm satisfied with how things are presently. I honestly don't encounter any problems, since CC has made vast improvements for us, like being able to invite players to the game while creating the game, and having the option to create multiple games of the exact same settings at once.

I do wish there'd be less people shamelessly organising tournaments for the sake of medal-hunting though - hoping to get the Tournament Contribution and Tournament Achievement medals in one fell swoop, and add to their counts for other gameplay medals. And, I mean no disrespect to those who've created countless 1v1 tournaments on different maps and settings - I am well aware that those require time too, especially with so many running simultaneously; but I do feel that we need more tournaments where the selling point is its innovative gameplay format, or the way it links its map and setting choices to a theme. There was once a Tournament Design Competition a long time ago - perhaps something like that would help to get the Tournament Community's creative juices flowing.

10. What advice do you have for someone just starting or wanting to start organizing tournaments?

Take part in at least 1 tournament before organising tournaments yourself, so you get a feel of how things are run. There's no harm starting with a simple gameplay tournament for your first time organising, or at least one that doesn't require you to create so many games at once - that's often the most annoying part when starting out. You can get more ambitious after having some experience.

Most importantly, install the Watch This Game add-on. It's a massive time saver for updating tournaments. It changed my life.

11. How has the tournament department changed over the years? What are the pros and cons? Is there something you miss from the old tournament days?

I'm not sure if I'm the person you should be asking about this... I honestly don't know much about the Tournament Department, since I've never once been a Tournament Director. The team certainly has expanded though, and there can only be pros, no cons, from that. Needless to say, the greater team size only means greater efficiency in the various aspects of tournament running, since the workload is more spread out. Back in the day we had to PM the TDs to request for tournament privileges once our tournaments were full... now they do everything for you! We're really fortunate. I do think all the Tournament Directors - past and present - have done a marvellous job.

Something I miss? barterer2002's tournaments.

12. How long have you been heading the tournament department for the newsletter? How has the experience been?

Hmmm, I first took over as Tournament Executive for the CC Dispatch in the middle of June last year, so it's been about 6 months since I first started. I'm really fortunate to be heading a team with such efficient and hardworking volunteers. It might be a small team with just 2 other people, but they really make things easy, getting their articles in way before the deadline. Thanks, DaveH and mcshanester29! The CC Dispatch Chief Executive, Dukasaur, has also been extremely helpful and supportive in showing me the ropes. What more could I ask for! Perhaps more writers... *hint hint* :P .

13. Is there a question you wished I asked and didn't? If so what is the q&a?

Hmm, not really, no. Your questions are pretty comprehensive (: And it looks like I've said more than enough... sorry for the long answers!

14. Any last comments in closing?

Thanks for interviewing me, and for doing a great job with all the other interviews so far!

No completed tournaments for weeks and now two have finished! These are:
"TheMissionary's Quads Showdown" tournament, rescued by mviola, with angola, slickstm, Hook2 and Crazysnakeguy winning from GeneralJestix's and mviola's quads teams in joint second place. These scores move dowian2 nearer to Swifte and arno30 into fourth place.

"MC's Master's of 6" has Swifte winning from ckyrias and, in joint third, deanof7 and dowian2. This result consolidates Swifte's lead at 6,760 points from dowian2 (5,301), leehar (4,015), arno30 (3,442) and barterer2002 (3,437).

Just three left ("A History of Europe", "CC Golf Match Play Season 2" and "MC's World Terminators") though it seems that the present running order may not change.

"Peanut's 3X Double-Elimination - Doubles[TPA3]", that I rescued from peanutman, has finished with donelladan & djelebert winning from zips5000 & jackal31, with PaRKoN & TaelS third and jgalioto & bigragooch in fourthplace.
There are 28 completed tournaments. Tournament leaders: uckuki(7,455); benga (6,544); Swifte (4,659); Aussie02 (4,4532); Gilligan (4,262). These scores have now been corrected to account for the best 8 Premier scores rather than all Premiers played.

TPA Season 4: Tournaments in Sign-Up

There are four TPA4 tournaments available for you to join:

30 Knots by jdean1 is a 30 round tournament based on sea maps. Twelve player games to start with, reducing after round 10.

Dukasaur's latest tournament is Struggles in the Snow in which a 3-player team chooses a snow-themed home map to match against their opponent's chosen map and Stalingrad; different points being scored for victories on the different maps.

I would kill for the Christmas Spirits by Beko the Great brings in the New Year in the traditional way with plenty of drinks and the CC way of plenty of assassin killing on 8 maps!

Angola loves the Originals II goes into Round 2 with Angola aiming for 128 players on 8-player games on 32 of the early CC maps.

Spoiler
And now for our regular look at a selection of the tournaments in sign-ups!

I would kill for the Christmas Spirits [TPA4] by Beko the Great - Freemium Friendly!
In this tournament, players have to be the first to win Assassin games on each of the 8 maps chosen for the tournament. The catch is, when you manage to assassinate other players, the player's map wins are transferred to you! Of course, the game is the one that assigns you your assassination target, so there's a lot more chance to it than it seems. But with a little luck on your side, winning this tournament could come a lot faster!

Asterix! by LittleMao - Premium Only.
This tournament is based on my favourite comic book series, Asterix. In this tournament, players are placed in a mixture of 4- and 8-player games, and earn points for winning games and making kills. At the end of each round, the 8 players with the lowest scores are dropped off from the tournament, and the rest advance till only 8 players remain. Finally, a series of eight 8-player games will be played on each finalist's chosen home map, and the biggest point earner wins the tournament! You don't actually need any knowledge of the comics to play - it's just the theme for the tournament and its maps, and is a nice touch for fans who just want to celebrate the comic again!

These are my picks, but if you don't like any of these go to the Create/Join a Tournament forum or Tournaments Tab and take a look at the many others waiting to be filled.

If you're craving tourney action now, check out the Requests for Immediate Players section of the tournament forum. You can be playing very quickly after signing up as a reserve.

If you would like your tournament to be featured in the next edition of the CC Newsletter, please PM anamainiacks with the details of your tournament.

From the Bigwham interview:
The forums have fallen off as the website has, but perhaps more so. As always, there is not

just one simple reason for this. We have put in place an appeal process for perma bans, so it

is possible to have them removed, however this is only a very small part of the puzzle.

Fundamentally we need to create a more vibrant environment, and that is something we are

working on. We have a new team called Community, that I am leading, and additionally we are

evolving the role of the Discussions Team specifically based around generating more life on the

forum.
The appeals process has been a joke in the past. If the same person is handling them, why would that change?

Also, mods should never be allowed to willy-nilly institute bans in the first place, imo.

Don't get me wrong. I really like Parachute reinforcements. It's a very nice option, but it isn't a completely new game mode like Polymorph.

Great Job guys,
its also time to acknowledge for the CC Community the hard work you have put in,
=D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
I joine 2011 as freebee, and could not enjoy this site as much since there are limitations for,
but 2012 i got premium and enjoyed everything so much,
still there is alot i havent discovered yet on CC,
and with all this new changes i will have a long time to go to have alot of fun here.

just what is stressing me out is the option of 24 hours,
i wished there would be an option ( only for premiums) that when u setup your games
the option is something like a one week break ( so you dont need a sitter)
and u can use this in one game 2 times,
i really want to have one week where i stay away from CC ,
because of lack of time ( full and hard working)
except in tournaments, i dont want to hold up anybody
one week of no cc, so i can be excited and focused to play my games
I used to roll the daizz
Feel the fear in my enemy´s eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:

Long live the Army Of Kings !
