Welcome Comrades to the 108th edition of the Dispatch :)

Swifte here bringing you a heapin' helpin' of the latest CC news and developments. It took our team a few extra days to get all that turkey outta their systems, but we've got another great issue full of goodies ready for your consumption, and another huge list of site updates to report on as well!

Here's what we have on tap for you:

The first regular section is Mess Hall and Interrogation Room, which includes a report from DoomYoshi on the new Monthly Challenges that kicked off this month, as well as an interview with the always entertaining Mageplunka69. Also, don't forget to check out the 4th installment of the trivia contest!

The Platoon Report covers all aspects of the Clan scene. This issue brings two updates to the F400, a look at who joined what clans in November, and a quick look at the major ongoing clan events.

War Games has the scoop on the tournament world, including a look at the new auto tournaments as their excellent regular features, including a Meet the Tournament Organizers interview with simmons4.

Cartographic Surveillance is your source for news from the map-making world, and this issue includes a look at all the XML ideas that have been submitted in Suggestions. It's exciting just to think about the kind of gameplay and maps these suggestions could bring about!

Finally, our Next Mission Brief includes such things as the closing credits and information on how to subscribe.

Swifte - Clan Executive & Guest Publisher for Issue 108

And finally some late-breaking news:
Late-breaking News and Announcements
Spoiler
Here's what's new since the last issue of the Dispatch:

On November 23rd, another huuuuge round of updates went live. They included:
  • The Official Championships of Conquer Club: Satellite tournaments for entry to the 1v1 Championship are underway, but you can still signup here for a chance to be one of the 128 players included in the 1v1 Championship event!
  • Auto Tournaments: Now you can sign up for a variety of tournaments that are fully automated AND often offer prizes such as CC credits to winners and sometimes other top finishers. You'll find them by clicking Tournaments at the top of your screen, on the main 'Join a Tournament' tab!
  • Zombie Spoils: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It wants to eat your braaaains! When you cash in your zombie spoils, the armies on the corresponding territories are turned into neutrals (similar to nuclear spoils, but the army count is not reduced to one). Maybe you can use these zombies to your advantage.

As well as a whole bunch of other upgrades!:
    • New Website Design - Home Page, Left Navigation and Footer have been reworked to be more consistent, tidier, screen-size flexible and space-efficient.
    • HTML Email Template - This one was released a week or so ago to make your CC email experience just that little bit nicer
    • Sequential Games with > 12 Players condensed on My Games page - For sequential games only this saves your MyGames from going into infiniscroll when you are in a Battle Royale
    • Fully Reserved Games removed from Game Searches
    • Show Teammate Spoils - Implements this Suggestion by dazerazer
    • List Player Colours in the Instructions tab - Implements this Suggestion by greenoaks
    • Beta Maps Link in Game - Implements this Suggestion by Mr_Adams
    • Maps Page Enhancement - Some small enhancements to our Maps Page including showing Games Per Month for each Map - still pursuing Qwert's Dream
    • Tournament Medals for more than 30 Tournaments won - Implements the Tournament Winners part of this Suggestion by Metsfanmax. Note: some players have erroneously had Tournaments Medals in excess of 30 issued to them - these will be removed as part of this update. Future medals will be attained according to the structure listed in the suggestion thread.

Challenge Medals: Suggestions Expose; from idea to reality by DoomYoshi
Spoiler
"So what's all this here monthly special?" your grandfather asked as you trounced him in San Francisco. I am here to explain it all.

In February, I made a suggestion for a monthly challenge medal. The idea was loosely based on Pogo, which has weekly challenge badges. I figured it would be a great way to bring people together in some of the more obscure settings and give more medals for people to strive for. I should note that I was not yet a discussions mod. At the time, we didn't have bots, polymorphic, parachute, no reinforcements, zombie spoils, auto-tournaments or any other of a hundred different things. El_jefe was still the owner, rds was the community manager.

It was a well received suggestion, nobody said it was a bad idea. Rds really liked the idea, and pushed it through the suggestions pipeline to the developers. I shortly thereafter became a suggestions mod and got to see the process at the other end. We used a system called trello to keep track of the suggestions. Unfortunately, the developers were more or less useless. As soon as I became a suggs mod, I went on trello and started going on what would later become the Beta testers website. One of the developers said "hey, check this out, now you can see other people's medal stats". Except you couldn't. Many months later, we finally have that implemented. Unfortunately, at that pace of development, it languished, and nothing happened.

To spur interest, I ran a unofficial monthly challenges, where the prizes were miscellaneous things (a Panda express coupon, for example). We had a good time for a few months. The main problems was people not being careful enough with the settings. I didn't nitpick, but since we are now handing out medals, we have to nitpick. Nota Bene: Read the settings carefully!

Now the trello system is gone, and most of the process is much more open. What you see in the suggestions forum is what you get. In general, when a suggestion is being developed , the OP mostly dictates what the final result will be. There is tons of discussion behind the scenes about the best way to implement these things (we tried 5 or 6 different formulas before the running scoreboard was released). The next thing which happened was that bigWham saw the suggested and BAM we have a medal. I assumed cool, the Entertainment team is going to hand out these medals soon. I asked the entertainment team and sempai went to talk to the admins and figure out what we are doing. Around this time, the community started asking questions.

In the end, we figured out a system that would work. I will post the challenges and do the micromanagement rulings that need to be done in the thread. The entertainment team will hand out the medals and serve as a mediator between me and the Team CC. The original challenges remain unofficial and no medals will be awarded for them.

Some of you may have noticed that I am no longer a mod. This is to free time up for the other things I like to do on CC. You may have realized that the DoomYoshi awards are coming up soon. Between that project and this one, I will be pretty busy for the next while. Also, my internet connection is like farting, but it is actually liquid that soils your pants. I still know and talk to all the Suggs mods though, and in my unofficial capacity I can serve CC much better than ever before.

The first challenge is ready, waiting for you.

Newbie Help

Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information, Mafia and You, and Rules and Terms of Mafia.
Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you.

What is "Mafia"?
Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.

Mafia News
Gladiator Mafia was a private game that resulted in a mafia victory. Private games are allowed in the mafia forum; although the mafia mods would prefer a notification or PM to prevent any miscommunications that could result in hurt feelings or other such things.

Mafia Callouts
Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling:

Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5
A well known maxim is applied to mafia this issue.

Occam's Razor

What is It?
Occam's Razor refers to the idea that the simplest theory is the most likely.

Example
After Night 1, a mafia player was killed as well as a town player. Occam's Razor indicates that the mafia kill was most likely the work of a third party serial killer. Less likely theories could involve some sort of town busdriver and lightning rod combination or the existence of a sanity doctor.

How to Use this Strategy
Occam's Razor is usually best applied in larger games where multiple night actions may suggest different courses of action. It tends to be most powerful when a lot of information is known during the day phase and multiple suspects are up for lynch consideration. Scum may use Occam's Razor as a cover for fake claims or deceptive actions however, so ultimately a strong grasp of the evolving game dynamics can help immensely.

War Games

Hello friends, and welcome to your favourite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments, and other stuff in the Tournament scene!

In this issue, we take a look at the awesome new feature to grace the tournament world - AutoTournaments, in the feature article entitled AutoTournaments, Roll Out! In it, we discuss the numerous attractive qualities that these AutoTournaments have to offer, and its possible impact on Community Run Tournaments.

Meanwhile, our writers continue to deliver solid news with mcshanester29's latest MTTO interview with simmons4, DaveH's update of TPA happenings in TPA Wrap, and my selection of tournaments awaiting signups in Join This? Or Not!

While we're at it, I'd like to publicly congratulate and thank DaveH for 2 years of service here with us as a writer on the Tournament Team of the CC Dispatch. He has consistently delivered long and substantial articles for every issue with 50 editions of his helpful Tournament Tips, and has always kept us up to date with the TPA Wrap! I'm sure I speak for the readers when I say that I hope you'll continue to be with us for a long time to come!

AutoTournaments, Roll Out! by anamainiacks
Spoiler
As part of the long list of updates released on 23 November, CC saw the introduction of AutoTournaments.
bigWham wrote:AutoTournaments are a new system of fully automated tournaments designed to run alongside our Community Run Tournaments. Rounds and Games start automatically and are managed by the Conquer Club system. There are Prizes up for grabs, including Medals, Credits and Entry into other Tournaments such as the Conquer Cup and The Championships.
This is definitely big news for the site as a whole, and is bound to shake up the tournament world.

Tournaments have always provided another dimension to the games here on CC, by providing players with an objective greater than that of winning a single game, or accumulating the most rank points. It's thus common knowledge that many players on CC, especially those new to the tournament scene, look to join smaller tournaments that boast a quick and simple format, such as 16- or 32-players single elimination bracket tournaments. With the introduction of these new AutoTournaments, tournament participants now have everything they could ever ask for in a tournament.

As the AutoTournaments run on an entirely automated system, the waiting time between rounds are now drastically reduced - while in the past players would have to wait till the TO is free enough to send out the next batch of games, the system now sends out the new games as soon as possible. Not to mention, the progress of the tournament - as well as game results - are readily available and updated in real time. The system also automatically places players in the games, meaning that players won't even have to go about clicking to accept any invites - players literally won't have to lift a finger! Of course, problems with that may arise when players who have left the site are still automatically placed in their games; but with such high efficiency, and already with multiple gameplay formats being produced, it's not hard to see why these AutoTournaments will be popular.

The other pull factor of these AutoTournaments are the greater amount of prizes at stake. In a typical Community Run Tournament, the only prize at stake is a Tournament Achievement Medal. On certain occasions, there might be a General Achievement Medal, or if the TO is feeling generous, a Premium Prize on the line as well. In AutoTournaments, however, there are prizes offered on top of the usual Tournament Achievement Medal - mostly CC Credits, and on occasion, guaranteed entry into another competition. What's more, it's not only the tournament winner that walks away with a prize - at least the top 4 finishers get to walk away with something in their pockets at the end of it all.

So, what does this update mean for our Community Run Tournaments? As players that seek a quick fix flock to these new AutoTournaments with all its greater efficiency and flashy prizes, TOs will have to find new ways to maintain an edge over these AutoTournaments, offering something that AutoTournaments can't. There is, of course, the TPA series of tournaments, which should naturally be able to continue keeping its pool of players engaged. And then it boils down to things we can offer to make the tournament experience different altogether. So whether it's keeping your usual pool of players engaged with your series, coming up with a tournament format which the AutoTournaments have yet to utilise, or throwing in a theme to spice up your tournaments; only time will tell what the full impact of AutoTournaments will be on Community Run Tournaments.
Meet the Tournament Organizers: simmons4 by mcshanester29
Spoiler
1. How did you come up with your username? Anything interesting you would like to tell us about yourself?

As former Marine I was used to being called by my last name Simmons and the 4 stand for my family - my wife, two sons and myself.

Image

2. What was the first tournament that you organized? How did it go?

Pearl harbor 2 on 2 was my first tournament, I remember I mixed up the invites on one of the games and had to resend them. It is definitely a learning process.

3. With an impressive 90 tournaments organized did you have a favorite? Least favorite?

My favorite tournament to make was teammate medal random quads-single entry, choosing a quad team randomly is a great way to equalize the playing field along with meeting new players. My least favorite would have to be the poker round robin quads between work and family its a lot of work all at once.

4. What are your favorite kind of tournaments to organize?

I would have to say my favorite tourneys were the quads I really enjoy playing with my team mates. I feel when we discuss each turn with the whole team and bounce ideas of each other we are favored to win every game.

5. What is your favorite map/settings?
My favorite map would definitely be pearl harbor. I prefer escalating spoils, chained reinforcements and foggy.

Image

6. Do you usually participate in your own tourneys?

Of the 90 tournament I've created I have played in around 85 or so and won 25.

7. Are you planning on organizing more tournaments in the future?

If I make more tournaments in the future it would be more of the random quads or something involving the new play options like Polymorphic and Parachute reinforcements. (As an unbiased person in this discussion go with another random quads ;) )

8. What advice do you have for someone just starting to organize tournaments?

My advice would be start with something easy like a single elimination doubles tournament on a map and setting you enjoy. Take your time when sending invites so you don't mess up like I did. Don't be afraid to ask for help if your not sure how to do something and if you do make a mistake don't let it bother you they are all fixable and 99% percent of the players on here will not only understand but work with you to fix it.

9. What kind of updates would you like to see to the tournament scene?

I actually all ready got the update I ask for being able to create multiple games at once, but i would like to be able to make up to 8 games at once instead of only 5 as that is what you need for minimum entry 1 on 1 tournament.

10. Was there a question you wish I had asked? Anything else you would like to add?

If you can't find a tournament you like make it yourself its a great way to contribute to the site and you could come up with something no one else has thought of.

Great advice mate and thanks for answering my questions!

And now for our regular look at a selection of the tournaments in sign-ups! This week we bring you a TPA4 Premier event, a fake clan war, and a possible chance to win a Premium Prize!

Wheel of Fortune [TPA4 Premier] by sempaispellcheck - Freemium Friendly!
This tournament brings the said TV show onto the realms of CC, combining the show's required puzzle-solving skills and general knowledge with CC's battle strategy and luck of the dice. The first game determines the order of play in the Wheel of Fortune puzzle within your group, and your performance in the subsequent games determines where your the value of your roll lands. You earn cash (fictional, of course) based on the number of times your guessed letter appears in the puzzle, and only the player that manages to correctly guess the answer to the puzzle gets to keep the winnings for the round. After 4 rounds of such play, the player with the most amount of money earned moves on to the next stage of the tournament, where the process is repeated.

Fake Clan War by benga - Premium Only.
Bringing a nice concept into his tournament, this tournament gives players a pseudo mini Clan War experience, one where every member of the clan happens to be just 1 person. Like in every clan war, there is a mix of games with 2, 3 and 4 slots per player (simulating doubles, triples, quads); and the player can decide the settings for half of the games (home sets), where they can best play to their own strengths while hopefully throwing off he opponent as well. If you think you're the best 1-man clan out there, then get your battle gear and charge in!

For Your Amusement bigWham by greenoaks - Premium Only.
It's not everyday you get to be in a tournament with the owner of the website, and perhaps have a chance to eliminate him, so what better reason do you need to jump into this tournament! Well, if that isn't reason enough to join, then it might please you to know that the TO is offering a 1-Year Premium Prize to the winner of the tournament, should the number of players in signups reach 64. It may not be as easy as you think to defeat bigWham though, as the tournament features his current favourite settings - Polymorphic with Parachute reinforcements. The tournament will be a best of 5 bracket tournament, with a mix of number of slots per player. These settings are definitely fun though, so you are bound to enjoy yourself regardless of the final outcome!

These are my picks, but if you don't like any of these go to the Create/Join a Tournament forum or Tournaments Tab and take a look at the many others waiting to be filled.

If you're craving tourney action now, check out the Requests for Immediate Players section of the tournament forum. You can be playing very quickly after signing up as a reserve.

If you would like your tournament to be featured in the next edition of the CC Newsletter, please PM anamainiacks with the details of your tournament.

xml Ideas in Suggestions - What comes next? by koontz1973
Spoiler
What follows is a list of xml suggestions that have been submitted to bigWham and co for consideration. These, if they get implemented would bring about a revolution in game play ideas for maps. Not every suggestion would get used on every map, but imagine the ideas that can be done with even one or two of these.

Conditional Bombardments by isaiah40

Brief Description: We all know what it is to bombard from one region to another. Seeing an opponents troops being reduced from one side of the board to another (even better when an elimination happens  ). With conditional bombardments, you get that added realism.
Idea on a current map: Trench Warfair, you have cannon/planes to bombard over no man' land, with this idea, that would only happen if you held an armoury as well.

Brief Description: Decaying regions on maps like the centre of DustBowl and within the 150 yard line on Rorke's Drift mean that troops decrease over time. With this idea, the decay would not stop at one troop like now, but reduce it to one neutral in the next round.
Idea on a current map: Using this idea on Rorke's Drift, the troops within the 150 yard line would all get killed. This would be in line with the original idea of killing troops closer to the camp.

Conditinoal AutoDeploys. by -=- Tanarri -=-

Brief Description: A region with an auto deploy will only get it if another region is owned.

Idea on a current map: We all know the huge auto deploys on City Mogul, well imagine you get none of them unless you own a house. Lose your house and lose the shop auto deploys. This would be a great addition for bringing in armies only when you own a commander.

Countdown Killer Neutrals by Kabanellas

Brief Description: Killer neutrals now happen at the begining of a players turn. Well with this, the killer would still be active but on set rounds only. Take it on round 2 and you have 2/3/4 rounds to get of it.

Idea on a current map: Classic map, imagine every continent border being reduced to rubble every 5 rounds.

Killer Neutrals inside a bonus by Kabanellas

Brief Description: Allow killer neutrals to become part of a bonus region. Forcing players to retake the region every round or lose out on the bonus.
Idea on a current map: On Classic, every round you lose Jakarta after receiving the +2 bonus, use your bonus to retake it or place the troops elsewhere.
Also, we get this from Kabanellas. ;)

Increasing / Decreasing Neutrals by koontz1973

Brief Description: Allow set neutrals on maps to increase or decrease.
Idea on a current map: Labyrinth, the neutrals in front of the slave entrances could increase, forcing players to come out and fight or get trapped forever. The 10 neutrals set around the castles in Feudal maps, could decrease. Making it easier to get out or in.

Team Starting Positions by koontz1973

Brief Description: We have the abality as map makers to give out starting positions to players. All this does is to allow teams to have them.
Idea on a current map: Look at Feudal Epic. Playing this map as a team means all players get jumbled up in the mix. A single player from a team can be surrounded by all opponents, rendering him useless and giving an unfair game. Also, with the ability to make maps only for team games now, to not be able to determine where a team starts seems a little pointless.

Up to now, bigWham has been great at giving us a new look homepage, game updates and many more improvements. But we still have the same maps and nothing new to do with them. Give us the tools to make the maps great again, and we will make them great again.

Map Name: Murder 1
Mapmaker(s): degaston
Number of Territories: 147
What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made: Basically, it's "Clue meets Risk". The style is that of the investigating detective's desk. The objective is to complete an Arrest Warrant by controlling a Suspect, Location and Weapon on the warrant, plus a "Detective Signature". Initial distribution will be only within the "Crime Scene" rooms; all others will be neutrals of various amounts. (1's in the hallways, larger numbers on the important territories).

"Evidence" (as signified by magnifying glasses and pointing hands) leads, via one-way assault, to weapons stored in the evidence rooms or suspects in an interrogation room. There are two of these links for each weapon and suspect distributed throughout the mansion rooms. Other links in each room assault their matching entry in the warrant. All of these links are only enabled when the player controls the entire room. Mansion rooms, evidence rooms and interrogation rooms all give bonuses. Hallways are a -1 deploy to discourage "loitering" and make holding large areas of the map more difficult.
