CC Dispatch [Issue 105 16-10-13] Polymorphia

Welcome Comrades to the 105th edition of the Dispatch :)

There is a long-standing tradition that an issue of the Dispatch is named after the subject of that issue's Interrogation. This is a tradition which I have now violated in seven of the last eight issues, and I am afraid I will have to do so again. "I am become Death, the destroyer of traditions...." Really ironic, considering how strongly I believe that a community needs to have ties to its past and respect its history.

Still, although I really enjoyed the Interrogation of chapcrap (see Mess Hall and Interrogation Room, below) once again major news on the site is overshadowing this development. Accordingly, I have named this issue Polymorphia, in honour of the major update that has caught many people's interest.

Here's what we have on tap for you:

The first regular section is Mess Hall and Interrogation Room, which includes the above-mentioned interrogation of chapcrap, as well as the second installment of IAmCaffeine's trivia contest. The first installment had relatively few entrants, so there is plenty of opportunity to get in there and score some points!

The Platoon Report covers all aspects of the Clan scene. It just gets bigger and better every issue. I'm going to stop talking about how much bigger and better it is again, because I'm running out of superlatives! Even if you're not a clan player, TheVoice's analysis of what maps the clans are playing on may give you some insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the various maps.

War Games covers all aspects of the tournament scene. If you haven't been involved in tournaments lately, here's some background to bite into. Particularly interesting is that Join This? Or Not! contains a full bevy of freemium-friendly tournaments this time around. If you find it difficult to find freemium-friendly tournaments, this is definitely a place to look.

In Cartographic Surveillance, our hard-working duo of Seamus and Koontz cover all that is new in the foundry. Just like the foundry itself, there is a lot of work that goes into presenting this information to us. If you haven't looked lately, you might be surprised by what is cooking!

Next issue, Seamus76 will be the guest publisher, so expect something pretty special for that one!

Finally, our Next Mission Brief includes such things as the closing credits and information on how to subscribe.

Dukasaur - Chief Executive

And finally some late-breaking news:
Late-breaking News and Announcements
Spoiler
Here's what's new since the last issue of the Dispatch:

The first week of October was overshadowed by Server Downtime and Data Loss

BigWham explains:
bigWham wrote:In the late evening of Oct 3 (CC Time) one of our core system data tables suffered data loss and could not be recovered.

The only efficient solution was to roll back our entire database to the most recent backup, which happened to be approximately 24 hours before.

Unfortunately all data from the period between the backup and the event has been lost, including moves made, games started, chat, private messages and forum posts.

Everything is back and running now and 24 hours have been added to all game timers.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will be crediting Premium Members with a 2 days of extension to their Membership, and Freemiums with 4 free speed games in recognition.

Sincerely,
A weary Admin crew.
There were some people very angry but most of us agreed that the administration did a good job of recovering from the crash as best as possible and informing us promptly. In the above-cited thread, positive comments outpaced negative comments by about 3-1.

In OT, there was a whimsical thread entitled Time Travel, whereas in GD the equivalent thread was Sueing CC for time down.

A few days later, BigWham reported on some steps that have been taken to reduce the impact of such a crash in the future: Subject: Server Backup and Recovery Updates
bigWham wrote:Greetings Community,

Following on from the data issues, and 1 day rollback, of last week, I wanted to report on steps that have been taken to improve CC's backup and recovery systems.

Since at least 6 weeks ago, when I first arrived on the Admin scene, the following system was in place:

- Daily backups of entire database, stored for 5 days.

Over the past few days we have put this system in place:

- Daily backups of entire database, stored for 4 days
- 3 Hourly backups of critical data tables, stored for 24 hours
- Daily transfer of copy of database to another server
- Mirror database put in place for dual purpose of beta testing (pre-launch) and live redundancy.

This is not all we will do, however some of the other plans will take longer to implement as they involve structural changes that need to be handled with care. We have also researched a variety of other types of options (mirroring, replication, etc) and may incorporate such things in the future. It should be noted that many options that exist that might improve one aspect of our overall experience, turn out to have a negative effect on some other aspect... so it becomes a trade-off in these situations. However, we are determined to continue to enhance CCs core infrastructure over time.

bWham,
Admin to the Community
Okay, enough about the crash...:)

On October 10th, another major update was rolled out. The single largest element, Polymorphic Games, gets an article of its own, so here I will only quote the parts that are not Polymorph-related.

Subject: Updates 10/10/13 - Polymorphic, Parachutes, Medals and Clans
bigWham wrote:There are more new features
  • Parachute Reinforcements- This option allows you to reinforce troops via parachute (i.e. from dislocated territories). We have found that this setting works extremely well with Polymorphic/Team games and Fog! Implements this suggestion.
  • 5 New Medals - Battle Royale, Bot, Beta Map, Polymorphic, Community Achievement. See the Medals Page for details. Note that the Beta Map medal will not be applied retroactively, however all other medals will be and any medals due will be issued the next time you win any game. These medals implement many separate suggestions submitted by members in the Suggestions Forum.
  • Clan Page Updates - Thanks to the incredible work of the Clan Directors, Leehar and chemefreak, we have recorded the entire history of CC Clan Warfare, and you can now view details of every Clan War, as well as enhanced details about every Clan on their own Clan Page - see the Main Clan Page.
My favourite part of all that is Parachute Spoils, one of the very first Suggestions that caught my eye when I was a new member and first started exploring the forums.

And last but not least, one of our regular annual traditions is back, the Halloween pumpkin contest:
3rd Annual CC Pumpkin Carving Contest!!
sempaispellcheck wrote: I think we can all agree that, as wonderful as the recent updates have been, we could use a return to what the TV bigwigs call "regularly scheduled programming."

In that spirit, I bring you the 3rd annual...

CC Pumpkin-Carving Contest!!

TeamCC challenges you to use the image below to carve the best pumpkin CC has ever seen! Color and carve your pumpkin however you like and send your entry to sempaispellcheck. I will then send all entries anonymously to our team of judges and they will pick a winner.

Prizes: First place will get a General Achievement Medal and 3 Months Premium and second/third place will also get a General Achievement Medal. You must use the image below!

The pumpkins will appear on the LIVE map Knights, as koontz1973 has graciously offered to once again edit the entries into his map. The map will go live with the pumpkins after the contest has ended. You may want to carve your pumpkin so that it won't be blurry when resized to a smaller dimension.

How-To:
1. Right-click the image and select "Save As"
2. Open the image with an image editing software such as GIMP or Photoshop and use that software to create your pumpkin
3. Upload your pumpkin to a image hosting site such as Photobucket.com
4. PM your pumpkin to sempaispellcheck with subject "Pumpkin"

Rules:
1. You cannot resize the image
2. All entries must be PMed to sempaispellcheck by CC Time: 2012-10-23 23:59:59

Spoiler
Polymorphic Games are part of the October 10th update. They are a premium-only feature which allows players to essentially play team games by themselves (ie. to have one player fill all the slots on a Dubs, Trips, or Quads team.) It is one of the oldest Suggestions on the books, dating back to May 16th, 2006:
Subject: [GP/UI] 2-player "team" games
rocksolid wrote:It seems to me that one interesting game mode would be doubles or triples games where each team is controlled by a single player. It seems to me it's a valid exercise in strategy, and I imagine the only thing standing in the way is the whole new leaf in programming that would be required. What thinks the peoples? This can of course be done by having multiple accounts, which in this case would not be unsportsmanlike, but of course unacceptable at CC for other reasons.
If you check the above thread, you will find 24 pages of debate, some of it negative, but most of it positive, and several modifications to the original idea.

Now that the suggestion has become reality, debate has moved from Suggestions to GD.

On Monday, October 14th, the always-thought-provoking Mr Changsha had this to say:Subject: The Polymorphic Death of Team Games
Mr Changsha wrote:I had a vision this morning. Clans with about 10 players each, but many, many more clans. Basic dubs, trips and quads games reduced to a state of laughable obsolescence. The farming of the terminally uncoordinated in casual team games a thing of the past. Standard no cards and flat games something 'stripers used to do before they could play polymorphic quads'. Fundamental changes all over the scoreboard.

I think this is going to be an absolutely revolutionary moment for Conquer Club. Is it going to make the site stronger and healthier? I'm still considering that, but I can't see how even in the reasonably long-term how clans are going to avoid the polymorphic wave, I can't see how players like me are going to continue to play team games, even knowing that I will lose the team spirit I so value, when I can control everything and play speed trips, and it is just easier to play polymorphically.

So I predict here that within six months clans will play polymorphically. I predict that most team game players will be playing polymorphically within two months and I predict that most standard flat/no cards players with be playing polymorphically in a similar amount of time.

Everything is going to change, I just can't work out if it is a good thing or not.
Here's a differing opinion:
Subject: The Polymorphic Death of Team Games
Shannon Apple wrote:I'm playing a few polymorphic games now, and it's just not the same as playing a team game. Sure, you get to control the entire thing and you don't need to discuss strategy, but it's like team games for loners. I'd miss the jokes and jibes that go on in games with my clan, even if they are sometimes at my expense. That's what makes team games worth it.

I don't think it'll kill team games at all.

I hope serious clan wars avoid polymorph since they aren't really team games. Clans wouldn't have a purpose anymore. Won't happen. We are here to stay!
And another:Subject: The Polymorphic Death of Team Games
DoomYoshi wrote:Mr. Changsha sees polymorph as tapping into the team market. This may be true for some casual players.
I see polymorph as tapping into the 1v1 market: which is 50% of the games on the site. If both is the case, then we will see a huge rise in polymorph games, a slight deduction in 1v1 and a slight deduction in team games.

Polymorph will be a quick way to test team play settings and practice your basics. I think that the clan world will still attach prime importance to the Real McCoy.
Love it, hate it, or somewhere in between, there is no doubt that many people see polymorph as a radically different option, not a cosmetic tweak but a completely new way of play that really does differ from previous game option. And some people definitely DO love it! Here's AAFitz at 8:55 pm on October 15th:Subject: The Polymorphic Death of Team Games
AAFitz wrote:You just convinced me to buy premium.
And here's AAFitz only 11 hours later:
Subject: The Polymorphic Death of Team Games
AAFitz wrote:I am not kidding when I say I already got my $25 worth of premium, this morning.
Well, that's one happy customer! Here's hoping for ten thousand more!

Dispatch Trivia - Round 2 of 10 by iAmCaffeine
Spoiler
In all honesty we had a disappointing amount of entries for the first round of trivia, especially considering there are a number of premium prizes up for grabs! On the other hand, those that bothered to enter have a much better chance of winning now, so best of luck.

We're now into the second round. It may be worth adding that all answers can be found in the Dispatch, and questions aren't necessarily directly linked to each other. Hopefully this clears some confusion from the first round.

Please note, all answers must be PM'd to iAmCaffeine before the next Dispatch is released. Answers sent elsewhere will be disregarded.

1. Who wrote a guide on Feudal War for the Dispatch last year?
2. Which tournament was voted Best Mid-Sized Tournament of 2011?
3. Who said they'd prefer to die on the Challenger rather than the Titanic?
4. Who joked that "lack installed a program a while back that turns the dots on the intensity cubes into webcams"?
5. Name the editorial: "Slice of...".
6. How many Dispatch issues did Victor Sullivan publish?
7. Who won the Phony Paragraph contest?
8. Who was interviewed with their wife?
9. In which issue was TheCrown interviewed?
10. What kind of tree could you find a Global Mod in?

Newbie Help

Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information, Mafia and You, and Rules and Terms of Mafia.
Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you.

What is "Mafia"?
Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.

Mafia News
Despite town losses being limited to vanilla townies for the first 3 days, town was unable to find the mafia members in time. Therefore mafia won Summer vs. Winter Mafia without a single lost member. A rare perfect win, but town had some good reads that were not able to generate enough lynch pressure.

Mafia Callouts
Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling:

Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5
A combination role is discussed this issue.

The Inquisitor

What is It?
The Inquisitor is a combination of Serial Killer and Cult Recruiter. The Inquisitor targets a player for a kill every night. If that player survives, the target becomes aligned with the Inquisitor instead.

Example
Jack targets Alice for a kill as Inquisitor. Bob protects Alice. Alice becomes a member of Jack's faction.

How to Play this Role
An Inquisitor usually signifies that there are multiple protective roles. If the Inquisitor or any aligned player dies, it is easier for town to eliminate the rest of the members by lynching or killing all players who were protected by any role. Generally, mafia or other anti-town roles can be recruited, so they may pose a threat to their former mafia members.

Interrogation of chapcrap
Q. Chap I've (betiko) always wondered what the hell does your avatar represents?
That’s a good question. I’m happy to answer. It’s just a family crest. My last name is Chapman.

Q. I'm (Dukasaur) more curious about what your name represents? Are you a chap who's always in crap?
Oh shoot, I should have said spoiler before I answered the first question. It’s a nickname from high school that comes from my last name.

Q. How would you rate yourself as a mafia player from a scale of 1-10?
Oh man… When I’m playing, I would say that I’m about a 7. Definitely above average, but I haven’t had any time to do that because of a job switch. My time is a little more sporadic than it used to be.

Q. Favorite mafia game?
This one: https://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewt ... 0&t=163644

It was nice because it let me geek out with a couple of different things I like at once.

PS: The Wizards won!!!

Q. Favorite mafia role?
Probably the mafia member. I really like to be in the know with more people. If I’m not mafia, I do like to have an ability, but you can never underestimate a good VT. The best way to play a VT is to get way involved from the outset and pull information out of people then overplay your town hand, so that the mafia wastes a lynch on you.

Q. What is your favorite destination for holiday?
We never really vacationed much when I was growing up. Mostly just trips to see family. I would say my two favorite places growing up (and I still like today) were Busch Stadium to watch the St. Louis Cardinals win some baseball games and to the Little Debbie factory in Gentry, Arkansas. Gentry was a fun day trip/weekend. Pretty much the whole town is Seventh Day Adventist, so everything is closed down on Saturdays.

Q. How much time do you spend on CC?
Not as much as I used to. When I first became a mod (almost two years ago), I was working evenings and had a lot more free time at work than I do now. So, I could spend extra time on CC from there. Now my CC time is a lot more sporadic. I’d say my CC time is down to about 20 hours a week.

Q. Am I (smegal69) on your Foe list?
Nope. I don’t have a very big foe list I feel like for as long as I’ve been on here. People just get there from being a very bad player or being a jerk once too often. Here’s the whole list:
  • acegreat
    albiestar
    bigbluegator
    Che Guevera
    gaerapi78
    Great-Ollie
    gribon
    Louie92
    Matt2006
    Mike22
    milo67
    mosul
    RUBENIUSSS
    santa.tank
    Sey69
    stanlyjohnson
    tainaron

Q. What made you go out there and start your own clan?
Wanted to play with a group of guys I knew pretty close and be able to shape the destination and path of the clan. It’s been a fun journey so far. We’re number 6 in the rankings right now. That’s not too bad for 15 months of work.

Q. What was the first thing you ever did better than your classmates?
Math. I’m pimp at adding single digits.

Q. 1-10, 1 being awesome and 10 being super awesome...how awesome would you say I (IcePack) am?
the Fallen?
Happyfeet?

I guess I’m confused because I’m not sure everything fits on the scale. I’ll do my best:
  • IcePack: -32
    the Fallen: 132
    happyfeet: 7

Q. How do you put up with icepack? :D
It’s rough. I’ve gotten a new phone twice now, but he keeps getting my phone number. I’m not sure what to do about it. If anyone knows anyone that can help me, it would be appreciated. So far, I’ve been managing with the help of http://kcpsych.com/

Q. What is one of your favorite parts of being a TD? Least favorite?
One of my favorites is being able to be there for people when they need help. It’s a gratifying thing that you can help someone as soon as they need the help or if you can’t, you know right where to go.

I would say the least favorite is having to go pick up Serbia after his binges. This is why we’ve really recruited some new CD’s. Each weekend one of us ‘takes call’ and I was getting pretty tired. Here’s him from last weekend: Image

Q. Who is your favorite TD to work with? (ahem)
Definitely Steelhorse. These guys we have around now are nuts.

Q. How do you like being a leader of a clan? What is your favorite part of the clan world?
I like being a leader. It’s take a lot of time and dedication. Something you have to realize when you become a leader is that a lot of people are putting themselves in your hands. You need to take that responsibility seriously, because not only does it harm the people in your own clan if you fail them as a leader, it hurts the clan world as a whole. Putting your best foot forward at all times is the best way to go about it.

My favorite thing is the competition. It’s a really large group of us here and being able to affiliate yourself with a group and go all out against the others is what is awesome.

Q. Fave thing bout being a leader of The Fallen?
Getting to play with a great group of guys. NO GIRLS ALLOWED!!

We just say that because we can’t get any girls and it makes us feel better.

Q. Worst thing bout being a leader of The Fallen?
Giving IcePack your phone number.
Q. Fave tourney you've ran?
I’ve ran a lot… I would say that this one is my favorite: https://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewt ... p?t=142815

Q. Fave tourney you've played it?
Hmm… I’ve played in over 7000 tournament games. It’s hard to pick a favorite. I think that I’ll pick this one, because I’d really like to see some more tournaments like it: https://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewt ... p?t=147693

I’m looking at you Foundry guys!!

Q. How many medals is enough?
How much air is enough?

Q. What's the highest number of games you've had going at once?
I was routinely about 150-160 for quite a while. I think I topped out around 184 or something like that.

Q. Do you still like flour?
Of course!!!
Image

This is why I thought that Gold Medals should be higher than Platinum Medals!!

Q. Ass or breast man?
Yes please. I really like stomachs more than anything. I good belly is what’s the most attractive. That being said, there isn’t a butt that I do not look at. I can’t help it. It’s not a chauvinist guy thing. I just look at everyone’s butts. I point out the truly awful ones to my wife. I’m a connoisseur. However, my wife has pretty big boobs. Maybe I have a picture… Here’s her 15 weeks pregnant.

Image

So, yeah, I like body parts.

Q. Do you feel optimistic or pessimistic about the future of CC?
I would say optimistic. This is definitely a transition period. I know the guys running the place really want to have things go well and are all trying their hardest. There is a lot to catch up on because of relative lack of updates. I’m hoping these can all get going and get a little smoother. I think in a year, all these major updates will be through and we’ll be talking about a lot of even more fun things. I mean, we just got polymorphic games and those are maybe the best thing on the site. Great stuff is coming, but I think it’s gonna be a little rocky getting there at first.

Q. Is there any team you don't want to be a mod for?
International Team. I’m only on four teams right now though, so I have a couple more to get to. I need to start making maps I think.

Q. You're in the middle of a game when Mikey Mouse shows up for dinner. What vegetable do you serve?
Wait. Who is Mikey Mouse? Is that Mickey’s brother? All this time, I’ve been thinking that Mickey was an only child. I’ve never heard of this guy. What’s next? Minnie’s got a sister? If she does, I hope she’s hot. Maybe something a little like this:

Image

Well, either way, I wouldn’t be serving vegetables. Probably a nice cheese platter with some pastries to complement it.

Q. Who is Mikey Mouse? Is he Mickey Mouse's nemesis?
Oh, holy crap! This whole time I was thinking it was Mickey’s brother. If it’s his nemesis, I definitely can’t be putting out the good cheese platter!

Q. What is your opinion on the story of Rapunzel?
Girls are always better looking with long hair, but sometimes there is a little. It starts to get a little gross if it’s too long. Also, what did she do, use Miracle Gro?! I mean, that’s a little crazy. Maybe it was the witches spell that made it longer. As a general rule, I try to stay away from witch spells.

Q. Would you prefer a girl with one breast or one arse cheek?
This is a tough one. I did a little bit of Googling on this one to help aid my decision. The thing I think that we need to take into account is how easy it is to fix the situation. Obviously two is optimal for each, with three being better than one. So, I’d definitely go with one breast, because it’s a lot easier to get a boob job than it is to get a butt job. FYI – don’t Google butt job.

Q. How much chap would a chapcrap crap if a chapcrap could crap chap?
The question is not if I can, but what my record is. The answer is of course 13.4 inches.

Q. If you could live one day over again, which would it be?
I’ll pick my wedding night. The reason is because I punched my wife in the face on accident. So, we were sleeping and I was dreaming that I was playing basketball. There was some giant guy who just laid on me and wouldn’t get off, so I was swinging and punching him in my dream. Well, in real life, my wife was laying me and I ended up punching her in my sleep. I felt so bad. I went and got her ice for her face. So, I’d live it over and get her some head gear or something to absorb my blows a little better.

Q. If you had to change your name onsite, what would your new name be?
Pixar

Q. Can blind people see their dreams?
That just blew my mind. I’m going to say no, because what would they see? They don’t have that experience, right?

Q. If you could challenge another member of CC to a fist fight solely based on your impression of them on the site, who would you pick and why?
AndyDuFresne. I’ve always wanted to fight a monkey.

Q. How does it feel to be king of all things freestyle? (Referring to
chapcrap wrote:F you all. I'm the best ever.
in this thread: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... 6&t=192473)
It feels pretty good to know that I’ve got one up on Bruceswar and rhp 1!!

Q. How often do you read the Dispatch?
I read some of it sometimes. I don’t usually read all of it, because I don’t have the time, but I do think it’s quality stuff.

Q. Please tell us your thoughts on the St. Louis Cardinals.
I’m glad you asked about that. They are currently 2-0 in the NLCS and surely about to go 3-0 tonight in their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Great franchise with a great pipeline of young players. A lot of these players came with Jeff Luhnow as part of the organization. He’s with the Astros now, so I wonder if the Astros will be able to field some similar talent in 3-5 years. Anyway, I would say that the Cardinals are very strong with pitching. They could use a little more over the fence power I think. That may come from some guys next year. The one position I would think about upgrading in the field is probably shortstop. With the depth of pitching that the Cardinals have, I think that the Diamondbacks would be a great trade partner this winter, because they could use some pitching and they have two quality shortstops is Chris Owings and Didi Gregorious. Another possibility is Texas with their two young shortstops. It’s going to be an interesting off season, because I see the Cardinals being very involved in trading.

Q. Yes, why was Whitey Herzog the smartest man on earth?
It mostly had to do with Willie McGee and Vince Coleman being faster than rockets. I mean go back and look how many steals Coleman had. He was gonna run, and the other team knew he was gonna run and he still stole over 100 bases in a season.

Q. When he dies, will they make extracts from his brain and sell them?
It’ll have to be black market, but the answer is yes.

Q. What would you do for a Klondike Bar? Would you kill a man?
Not much, it’s too ice creamy and chocolately for me. I might like some salt water taffy or gummy bears.

Yes, I would kill a man.

Q. What was your third favorite experience from the ages 12 to 17.5?
It had to do with a banana popsicle, a 3 iron, and a swimming pool. I’m not legally allowed to say any more about it.

Q. Who is your favorite former Suggestions Team Leader that is not TFO?
I can’t remember any good ones besides him.

Q. What's changed in the TPA under your direction?
Not a ton. We’ve shortened the season a little bit and added some prizes and an All Star event, but not too much other than that. Hopefully more hands on deck and more minds in the pot will make it continue to be great. The guys who’s been here before have done a great job, so we’re mostly just carrying the torch on.

Q. How often do you beat your wife? (on CC...)
Will your now/future children play CC? How long will you play nice until you crush them?

I beat my wife in everything!! That’s why we don’t play very many games. We have Risk, Monopoly, Chess, Checkers, Scrabble, Battleship, and a lot of card games. The only thing she’ll still play with me is Battleship. I beat her at that three nights ago. No mercy!! I feel the same with the kids! I don’t let up! Of course, I’ll probably play more games of chance with them than games of skill… Here I come Trouble, UNO, Sorry, Yahtzee!, and so many others.

Platoon Report

Post by Swifte »

Image

Welcome to another jam-packed issue of the Platoon Report, your headquarters for Clan news!

Just last issue, I wrote about CC users suggestions for updates to the Clan page and lo and behold updates have arrived. The complete war history of every clan, active or otherwise, right down to the game-by-game level, is now available in each clan's Details page! This is a HUGE accomplishment and a great deal of thanks is owed to Leehar, chemefreak, and to bigWham for all their work bringing this to reality. The winning clan avatars are also updated for active clans, and the date founded has been included for each clan. Clans also have their own details page, which includes links to their recruitment and headquarter pages. It's safe to say, the Clan page has become a source of a great deal of information, and is looking fantastic... if you haven't checked it out yet, you're missing out!

Our reporters have been on overdrive for this edition! Keefie kicks it off with an update on Clan League 5, which is rapidly drawing to its exciting conclusion. The Voice has done an thoroughly interesting study of where the CC4 wars are - or more specifically, the maps on which the battles are occurring. Betiko challenges our readers to think about all the new gameplay options, and how they might impact the clan scene. Last but certainly not least, IcePack backs up and drops off a truckload of rankings for your enjoyment - the latest version of the F400, a first look at 1v1 rankings, and the Platoon Report exclusive Combined Conquer Clan Standings.

Believe it or not, there's much much more going on in the clan world, and we need your help to inform the rest CC Clan world! We're looking for regular reporters to help cover the other great events that are going on.. contact me or Dukasaur if you're interested!

See you on the battlefield!

CL5 Update by Keefie
Spoiler
Premier League

Long time leaders KORT don't have to look far to see the Immortal Assassins breathing down their necks. IA are now level on points and have closed the game difference to just 1. KORT do have a game in hand, but they look like losing to the Pig Renters in round 18, so this could give IA the chance to take the lead. A very exciting finish is guaranteed.

Image

Second League

OSA seem to be on track to win the Second League. Risk Attackers, Imperial Dragoons and Memento Mori all have a chance to close the gap but they can't afford any slip ups if they are to succeed.

Image

Third League

AQOH now have one hand on the prize. Dynasty look like losing their last match so the only clan capable of closing the gap are the Headless Horsemen. HH must win their remaining two games and hope AQOH slip up, neither of which look like happening.

Where the CC4 Wars Are by The Voice
Where the CC4 Wars Are
The Round of 16 in the CC4 has seen many veteran players and their teams clash. These wars were LoW vs. ID / Kort vs. TFFS / RA vs. ATL / TOFU vs. DYN / TSM vs. Myth / IA vs. MM / AFOS vs. ACE. As this round comes to a close, I wanted to take a closer look at where the battles were fought.

With all of the close battles being waged, choosing one home map over another can be the difference between winning and losing an entire war, which is why many teams take map selection seriously.

This round saw 480 games take place (tie-breaks not included), more than twice the number of available maps. Of the approximately 225 live maps not in beta, 152 were used.

Nothing New
Some of the frequently used maps came as no surprise to me. The two most popular maps that feature Rome, Conquer Rome and Poison Rome, were used 12 and 9 times respectively. Hive (played 9 times) and First Nations Americas (played 7 times) made routine appearances thanks primarily to the unlimited gurus. Fittingly, war-themed maps dominated the most-played list; Arms Race!, Battle for Iraq, Pearl Harbor, WWII Europe, Bamboo Jack, D-Day: Omaha Beach, Baltic Crusades, Lunar War, Third Crusade, and Waterloo all had more than 5 appearances. In all, 25 maps were used more than 5 times across all wars.

Clans left little to chance. No clan chose itty-bitty maps such as Luxembourg, Egypt: Lower, or Madagascar, and the Random Map generator was used but once.

What I learned
Relatively newer maps such as Baltic Crusades, King's Court II, and Eurasia were each used 6 times, indicating that they might be popular choices for years to come. Despite it being the 4th oldest map, Brazil is still fresh in the minds of many. With 1 exception, if you were playing on an Age of Realms map, you were playing Magic. And first turn advantage didn't stop City Mogul from making 6 appearances.

Big Surprises
Overall site popularity doesn't necessarily correlate with Clan game popularity. In fact, of the 20 most played maps on this site, only two were played more than 5 times, Arms Race! and Feudal Epic. The biggest shock to me was that my favorite map, Pelo War, along with Feudal War had only 2 showings apiece. As a frame of reference, Doodle Earth was even played twice. I wouldn't consider it to require much strategy, but perhaps it's the novelty of playing CC's smallest map. Classic also had a poultry turnout of 1 game.

Epic Conquering
So, what map took home the title as the most used in the Round of 16? It was a tie between Feudal Epic and Conquer Rome, which each made 12 appearances.

Clans Vs. New Game Modes; Where Do We Stand? by Betiko
Spoiler
Hear me now!
We would all agree that CC's clan scene is pretty conservative and is generally reluctant to changes. Trench and nuclear are just sporadically being allowed in challenges, semesters after their implementation. Nevertheless, the introduction of bigwham as the new site owner is bringing a vast variety of new game modes. Can this change the clan world forever? How could we apply them to clan challenges?
  • 12 player games: We have seen a few times 3/4 way challenges between clans. It wouldn't be impossible to see one of these days a triple quads or a quadruple triples/dubs added in the terms of a new challenge. This could nevertheless be a bit problematic and would need some extra rules; as the 2/3 losing clans in the challenge could be tempted to gang up on the leading clan. Maybe use such game as a prologue?
The 5v5 and the 6v6 options are not yet available. Nevertheless, these will definitely be very promising for clan games. It will not just result in the addition of 1 or 2 players to a quads team. This will change completely the player targeting/defending/sacrificing strategies, mostly in escalating games.
  • No forts: This is a very different setting that requires a completely different way of thinking. Some players are already trying to master this new setting, but the strategies on each map/settings are very different. A mind shifting experiment that will require some time before the clan scene gets used to it.
  • Parachute forts: This can result in very lethal confrontations, mostly in foggy conquest map. Lots of bluffing and log analysis. Who did he pass the stack to? Is that really all their stack? are they preparing an attack or a team-kill for spoils? I haven't played team fog parachutes yet, but I just imagine how crazy it could get! Not to mention that breaking fort lines, isolating troops will no longer be viable strategies.
  • Polymorphic: Now here's an interesting one. 1v1 team games! Given that we have 1v1 clan challenges, and that we all know how to play team games... polymorphic games seem like a natural new game mode for the clan scene that should be accepted very quickly. Wouldn't it make more sense to play someone in a polymorphic game rather than 1v1 in a clan challenge? You can also get the players you know the most as teammates. Will your "team" have what it takes though?
  • New maps: finally, with the new beta medal as an incentive to play more beta map games, I suspect that more and more people will get a good beta map training. Once they are released from beta, any clan can add them to a challenge. This is not new, but the amount of maps in beta is higher than ever. Something to anticipate for sure!
So where do you stand? Which of these new game modes are you looking forward to seeing accepted by the CLA? Which ones do you think should never get close to the clan world?

1vs1 Ranking by IcePack
Spoiler
As I was updating some results on the 3rd Year of the Clan area's Annual 1 vs 1 Competition, it made me start to wonder exactly who was the best 1 vs 1 clan on CC? Now, we don't have a lot of data to work with but I wondered with what we had in official competitions, what would the ranking system look like?
So I went about working on yet another ranking for everyone to peruse. I had a pretty good feelings ACE (aka EMP of old) was probably going to be the top ranking, since they had won the competition twice before and were still in it this year (*disclaimer, since AOC never participated in the 1 vs 1 challenge, and there was no need to differentiate between AOC and EMP, all EMP results just counted for ACE in this calculation since we already were low on data to work with, and this is just for fun)
But I really wanted to see....which clans (other than EMP/ACE) would be near the top, and by how much?

Here is the result of that, hope you enjoy.

Meet the Tournament Winner: hmsps by mcshanester29
Spoiler
1. How did you come up with the user name hmsps? Anything about yourself you would like to tell us?

HMS is my Job (Her Majesty's Service) Image sounds better than what it is I am a Tax Inspector. the PS are my initials. I am 47 and play CC way tooooo much.

2. 38 tournament wins is very impressive, Do you play as many tournaments as you used to?

I tend to play tournaments either when invited by others or if i see tournaments with maps i like. I prefer to play team games but will play the odd singles.

3. What are your favorite kinds of tournaments to play in?

Mainly dubs or trips and I quite like larger tournaments as if you can win one of those it feels like an achievement.

4. Do you remember your first tournament win? Did you have that feeling that you were going to win or was it a surprise?

I think the first one was on a classic map, it was 1 v 1 so usually drop and start make all the difference. I probably started 2 out of 3 of the final so that gave me the edge.

5. What tournament win do you feel was your biggest accomplishment?

Probably a Feudal League where there were a few teams, it was dubs and there was 40-50 games in total.

6. Do you like to play in solo tournaments or team tournaments?

Prefer team so if anyone wants to invite me....lol

7. Do you have a favorite TO who is no longer on CC ?

SDH used to organise a few and would give me a heads up so I could get my name down for it.

8. Do you have a goal of how many tournaments you want to win?

Not really I just try and win everyone I enter.

9. If you could change or add something to the tournament world what would it be?

Nothing really as the ones I have been in have usually been well run.

10. Anything else you would like to add?

Just thanks to Tournament Organisers and to keep up the good work.

Thanks mate now back to the taxes
Tournament Tips by DaveH
Spoiler
The best aspect of using Challonge in your tournament thread is that, once you have updated the results in Challonge, the changes are immediately reflected in your tournament thread.

So, what are the other ways in which you can limit the time you have to spend after updating results in your spreadsheet in writing them into your thread?

The obvious one is to have the thread copied from your spreadsheet, so that, after updating your spreadsheet results, one of your spreadsheets with the thread copy on is also updated and can be copied directly to the thread. This sheet does not have to be the one that you update results on, but obviously linked to the results spreadsheet.

For instance, in my Noughts and Crosses tournament, as I wrote about in article 102, one page contains the complete tournament thread and the following is from another sheet showing each game. To reiterate this article, but from the perspective of creating a spreadsheet with all the information on it that can easily be written into your tournament thread
Image
I have the two opponents, one playing "O" and the other "X" and a record of their game choices. Opponents chose their map in turn. The game winner then has their "X" or "O" inserted into the game matrix. In the above example, Epitaph1 won the game on Feudal Epic and has his "O" inserted into the appropriate square and osman76 won on Arms Race and so has his "O" inserted. The current game is specified by putting "Game" into the appropriate matrix position which in this case is where Pelloponesian War is.

If you note that the game matrix is mapped out with a second matrix next to it that has references to "img". This information comes from a lookup table (called Maps) on a different Excel sheet that has the actual image references in it i.e.
Image
The table of images are then linked by the Excel lookup function i.e. The top left square has "=VLOOKUP(H59,Maps,2,FALSE)" which will lookup the map reference from cell H59, which is the top left (World) position on the game matrix. The sheet with the thread content then has a link to the image matrix i.e.
Image

which, when the content of the sheet is copied to the thread itself, appears as:
Image

Lines 73 to 77 contain the three by three sets of images. If I look at the content of line 74 it is "=Games!L59&Games!M59&Games!N59" which brings the three row image references from my "Games" sheet to the thread.

OK so I did not get the images to exactly the same size, but I have greatly simplified the time it takes to update the thread. Another advantage is that I can easily copy the game image matrix into the pm I send to the player whose turn it is next to give them a pictorial representation of the game progress so they can more easily select the map they next want to play on.

These "tips" started off as ones that I used to make it a bit easier in managing my own tournaments. Now, I am looking at other types of tournaments and scoring systems by all you innovative TO's out there. So, if you have a unique scoring system that you would like me to have a go at automating, please let me know and I'll be pleased to try and assist. Any queries on the above I'll be glad to respond to of course. Please note that I have just moved to Excel 2010, so there may be variations if you have other versions of Excel)

And now for our regular look at a selection of the tournaments in sign-ups! There aren't many standalone tournaments these days - and by that I'm referring to tournaments that aren't part of a series which often have their own following - but here are the few that I've managed to uncover! They are all freemium friendly, though they require 2 game slots each.

Olinguito's Tic-Tac-Toe by Olinguito - Freemium Friendly!
Bringing one of the most beloved classic games to CC, this tournament sees players battling with their opponents for squares on the Tic-Tac-Toe grid to make their 3 X's or O's in a row and win the matchup. Be careful how you plan your strategy and choose your home maps wisely though - win a game, and the square in question will be yours; but one wrong move in the game could hand the victory and thus the square over to your opponent. Earn points for winning the Tic-Tac-Toe game, and hopefully you'll make it through each cut till the end to take home the tournament win!

Osman's Beta Maps Swiss Style Tournament by osman76 - Freemium Friendly!
Deviating from the usual tournament setups of Bracket and Round Robin systems, this tournament uses the Swiss Style tournament setup. In all honesty, after reading the linked Wikipedia I still don't quite understand how this tournament setup works... But since the TO will be handling everything about matchups, all players need to know is that they will be participating in all 13 rounds of the tournament regardless of their performance in each round. What better way to get better acquainted with the recent Beta maps that the Foundry Department has been faithfully producing!

Turkey Time Tourney by Hornet95 - Freemium Friendly!
It's not time for thanksgiving yet, but that doesn't stop there from being any Turkey action in here. Borrowing from bowling's terminology of 'turkey' to refer to getting 3 strikes in a row, this tournament requires players to achieve something of a very tall order - win three 8-player games in a row. It's common knowledge that these games often rely on heavily on luck to get the right cards at the right time, so if you think you'll be the one that lady luck winks upon - thrice, then don't hesitate to put your name down for this one!

These are my picks, but if you don't like any of these go to the Create/Join a Tournament forum or Tournaments Tab and take a look at the many others waiting to be filled.

If you're craving tourney action now, check out the Requests for Immediate Players section of the tournament forum. You can be playing very quickly after signing up as a reserve.

If you would like your tournament to be featured in the next edition of the CC Newsletter, please PM anamainiacks with the details of your tournament.

Last issue Koontz1973 shared with us one of Conquer Club's best kept secrets when he made everyone aware of the map breakdown list. But, did you know there is an actual Gallery of the maps here on Conquer Club, as well as a way to rate each map? Odds are you didn't. But there is, and through the extremely dedicated, and hard work of Foundry Foreman thenobodies80 there is a place you can go to see all of the maps, and rate them based on the following:
  • Graphics
    Gameplay
    Complexity
    Enjoyment
How does your favorite map rate? Check it out.

I am currently in the process of updating a lot of the information, so please be patient, but feel free to get in there and start rating maps. Access and details for the Gallery can be found here Map Foundry Gallery. Enjoy.

Soon, we will be getting our very first map designed for the 1v1 game. Only cairnswk and his stubbornness has managed to push his map all the way to the end. But it was not the first and with more being worked on, it is about time we take a look at what is one of conquer clubs most popular settings.

Although it currently sits in the Foundry recycling bin, the very first map designed for 1v1 gameplay was developed by Dim, an extremely popular map maker who designed some great maps, and probably some of your favorites. This map is also the only 1v1 map that was given the supersize stamp as well. Now forbidden for 1v1 maps.

What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made:
  • 1. main reason - small 1v1 map that is a couple of rounds long
    2. easy-peasy, quick games
    3. pertinent to the USA, this was a battle between 2 railroad companies to see who could build their section of line first.
    4. some rail fans and 1v1 fans might like it
It is worth noting, this is the closest to beta and will be ready to play some time this year. :D (Maybe)

What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made: I would love to see more dedicated 1v1 maps and I had a thought that if the game play were done in format utilizing conditional borders and a few different win conditions it could be a challenging mental puzzle. I also added the little monsters to make it feel like a classic 80's video game and to make it feel a little more lighthearted. *@#!$ and ?!#@ are locked in an epic struggle for the isometric land of Q*bia. For those of us that got some wrong, could we have the correct answers from the first round of the trivia contest?

Yeah, I believe they should have gone into this issue. We got our wires crossed somewhere, I think. Give me 24 hours to confirm with the author.

I have to disagree with you on a few answers, Caffeine.

#3:
http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... 30&t=88261

In the title, which is the publication date, says 2-2-2009 (even though the timestamp of the first post is different). This current issue is a good example of that. The publication date is 16-10-2013, yet the timestamp of the first post is in June.

#4:
Your answer is from March 26, 2009.
http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... 5#p1922882

Unless you can exactly remember that date, you have to go back to the update before March 25th to February 8: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... 5#p1878813

In which case the answer is Optimus Prime at 4,538.

#10:
You specified no timezone....In my land it was 10:39 AM, maybe in yours it was 2:39 PM.

Anyway, I still love trivia and will continue to participate.

That's an arguable point I guess. I would argue it's not actually published until it is posted. Dukasaur can rule on this one.

Fair point, I didn't consider that as I assumed everyone would be on CC time. In that case all answers with the correct date and minutes will be marked right. I'll amend this in the next issue.

I have to agree with Gilligan on #3 (of course, that was my answer, too ;) ). For some reason, the timestamp of the first post seems to be before the stated publication date. I've never figured that out. As he stated, Issue 104 is an excellent example. There's a difference of 3½ months between those dates!

Re #9: Okay, I found the newsletter where it talks about the foundry reorganization in February but here: The Foundry is being Revamped! is a discussion about the foundry actually being shut down in December of 2009 for "a mysterious ongoing refurbishment".

Apparently, I was just dead wrong on #10! :D

The same issue lies with this answer. That dispatch went out on March 30. As I was the one that updated those fun little stats in the Hall of Fame, there was no way they could have gotten that information BEFORE I posted it. I would immediately publish the data as I had it, I never did what IcePack does with the F400 ("The next F400 is published in the dispatch", etc).

Anyway, I'm not going to make a scene about it, because there is ambiguity in dates posted and dates published with the dispatch.

the difference in dates is they are working on a draft/template which then gets posted.

There are often 3 possible dates for a newsletter. There is a stated date in the title (which is sometimes wrong although usually very close), there is a timestamp on the post (which is often just the date that the template was made, not the date of publication), and last but not least there is the true actual publication date (which may be difficult to prove due to the presence of the other two.)

Since this is a friendly competition, I would say that when in doubt, give them the points. If there's more than one correct answer, let's not quibble about which one is the most correct.
