Welcome Comrades to the 105th edition of the Dispatch
There is a long-standing tradition that an issue of the Dispatch is named after the subject of that issue's Interrogation. This is a tradition which I have now violated in seven of the last eight issues, and I am afraid I will have to do so again. "I am become Death, the destroyer of traditions...." Really ironic, considering how strongly I believe that a community needs to have ties to its past and respect its history.
Still, although I really enjoyed the Interrogation of chapcrap (see Mess Hall and Interrogation Room, below) once again major news on the site is overshadowing this development. Accordingly, I have named this issue Polymorphia, in honour of the major update that has caught many people's interest.
Here's what we have on tap for you:
The first regular section is Mess Hall and Interrogation Room, which includes the above-mentioned interrogation of chapcrap, as well as the second installment of IAmCaffeine's trivia contest. The first installment had relatively few entrants, so there is plenty of opportunity to get in there and score some points!
The Platoon Report covers all aspects of the Clan scene. It just gets bigger and better every issue. I'm going to stop talking about how much bigger and better it is again, because I'm running out of superlatives! Even if you're not a clan player, TheVoice's analysis of what maps the clans are playing on may give you some insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the various maps.
War Games covers all aspects of the tournament scene. If you haven't been involved in tournaments lately, here's some background to bite into. Particularly interesting is that Join This? Or Not! contains a full bevy of freemium-friendly tournaments this time around. If you find it difficult to find freemium-friendly tournaments, this is definitely a place to look.
In Cartographic Surveillance, our hard-working duo of Seamus and Koontz cover all that is new in the foundry. Just like the foundry itself, there is a lot of work that goes into presenting this information to us. If you haven't looked lately, you might be surprised by what is cooking!
Next issue, Seamus76 will be the guest publisher, so expect something pretty special for that one!
Finally, our Next Mission Brief includes such things as the closing credits and information on how to subscribe.

And finally some late-breaking news:
Late-breaking News and Announcements
Spoiler
The first week of October was overshadowed by Server Downtime and Data Loss
BigWham explains:
There were some people very angry but most of us agreed that the administration did a good job of recovering from the crash as best as possible and informing us promptly. In the above-cited thread, positive comments outpaced negative comments by about 3-1.bigWham wrote:In the late evening of Oct 3 (CC Time) one of our core system data tables suffered data loss and could not be recovered.
The only efficient solution was to roll back our entire database to the most recent backup, which happened to be approximately 24 hours before.
Unfortunately all data from the period between the backup and the event has been lost, including moves made, games started, chat, private messages and forum posts.
Everything is back and running now and 24 hours have been added to all game timers.
We apologize for the inconvenience and will be crediting Premium Members with a 2 days of extension to their Membership, and Freemiums with 4 free speed games in recognition.
Sincerely,
A weary Admin crew.
In OT, there was a whimsical thread entitled Time Travel, whereas in GD the equivalent thread was Sueing CC for time down.
A few days later, BigWham reported on some steps that have been taken to reduce the impact of such a crash in the future: Subject: Server Backup and Recovery Updates
Okay, enough about the crash...bigWham wrote:Greetings Community,
Following on from the data issues, and 1 day rollback, of last week, I wanted to report on steps that have been taken to improve CC's backup and recovery systems.
Since at least 6 weeks ago, when I first arrived on the Admin scene, the following system was in place:
- Daily backups of entire database, stored for 5 days.
Over the past few days we have put this system in place:
- Daily backups of entire database, stored for 4 days
- 3 Hourly backups of critical data tables, stored for 24 hours
- Daily transfer of copy of database to another server
- Mirror database put in place for dual purpose of beta testing (pre-launch) and live redundancy.
This is not all we will do, however some of the other plans will take longer to implement as they involve structural changes that need to be handled with care. We have also researched a variety of other types of options (mirroring, replication, etc) and may incorporate such things in the future. It should be noted that many options that exist that might improve one aspect of our overall experience, turn out to have a negative effect on some other aspect... so it becomes a trade-off in these situations. However, we are determined to continue to enhance CCs core infrastructure over time.

On October 10th, another major update was rolled out. The single largest element, Polymorphic Games, gets an article of its own, so here I will only quote the parts that are not Polymorph-related.
Subject: Updates 10/10/13 - Polymorphic, Parachutes, Medals and Clans
My favourite part of all that is Parachute Spoils, one of the very first Suggestions that caught my eye when I was a new member and first started exploring the forums.bigWham wrote:There are more new features
- Parachute Reinforcements- This option allows you to reinforce troops via parachute (i.e. from dislocated territories). We have found that this setting works extremely well with Polymorphic/Team games and Fog! Implements this suggestion.
- 5 New Medals - Battle Royale, Bot, Beta Map, Polymorphic, Community Achievement. See the Medals Page for details. Note that the Beta Map medal will not be applied retroactively, however all other medals will be and any medals due will be issued the next time you win any game. These medals implement many separate suggestions submitted by members in the Suggestions Forum.
- Clan Page Updates - Thanks to the incredible work of the Clan Directors, Leehar and chemefreak, we have recorded the entire history of CC Clan Warfare, and you can now view details of every Clan War, as well as enhanced details about every Clan on their own Clan Page - see the Main Clan Page.
And last but not least, one of our regular annual traditions is back, the Halloween pumpkin contest:
3rd Annual CC Pumpkin Carving Contest!!
sempaispellcheck wrote: I think we can all agree that, as wonderful as the recent updates have been, we could use a return to what the TV bigwigs call "regularly scheduled programming."
In that spirit, I bring you the 3rd annual...
CC Pumpkin-Carving Contest!!
TeamCC challenges you to use the image below to carve the best pumpkin CC has ever seen! Color and carve your pumpkin however you like and send your entry to sempaispellcheck. I will then send all entries anonymously to our team of judges and they will pick a winner.
Prizes: First place will get a General Achievement Medal and 3 Months Premium and second/third place will also get a General Achievement Medal. You must use the image below!
The pumpkins will appear on the LIVE map Knights, as koontz1973 has graciously offered to once again edit the entries into his map. The map will go live with the pumpkins after the contest has ended. You may want to carve your pumpkin so that it won't be blurry when resized to a smaller dimension.
How-To:
1. Right-click the image and select "Save As"
2. Open the image with an image editing software such as GIMP or Photoshop and use that software to create your pumpkin
3. Upload your pumpkin to a image hosting site such as Photobucket.com
4. PM your pumpkin to sempaispellcheck with subject "Pumpkin"
Rules:
1. You cannot resize the image
2. All entries must be PMed to sempaispellcheck by CC Time: 2012-10-23 23:59:59
Go to town!

Subject: [GP/UI] 2-player "team" games
If you check the above thread, you will find 24 pages of debate, some of it negative, but most of it positive, and several modifications to the original idea.rocksolid wrote:It seems to me that one interesting game mode would be doubles or triples games where each team is controlled by a single player. It seems to me it's a valid exercise in strategy, and I imagine the only thing standing in the way is the whole new leaf in programming that would be required. What thinks the peoples? This can of course be done by having multiple accounts, which in this case would not be unsportsmanlike, but of course unacceptable at CC for other reasons.
Now that the suggestion has become reality, debate has moved from Suggestions to GD.
On Monday, October 14th, the always-thought-provoking Mr Changsha had this to say:Subject: The Polymorphic Death of Team Games
Here's a differing opinion:Mr Changsha wrote:I had a vision this morning. Clans with about 10 players each, but many, many more clans. Basic dubs, trips and quads games reduced to a state of laughable obsolescence. The farming of the terminally uncoordinated in casual team games a thing of the past. Standard no cards and flat games something 'stripers used to do before they could play polymorphic quads'. Fundamental changes all over the scoreboard.
I think this is going to be an absolutely revolutionary moment for Conquer Club. Is it going to make the site stronger and healthier? I'm still considering that, but I can't see how even in the reasonably long-term how clans are going to avoid the polymorphic wave, I can't see how players like me are going to continue to play team games, even knowing that I will lose the team spirit I so value, when I can control everything and play speed trips, and it is just easier to play polymorphically.
So I predict here that within six months clans will play polymorphically. I predict that most team game players will be playing polymorphically within two months and I predict that most standard flat/no cards players with be playing polymorphically in a similar amount of time.
Everything is going to change, I just can't work out if it is a good thing or not.

And another:Subject: The Polymorphic Death of Team GamesShannon Apple wrote:I'm playing a few polymorphic games now, and it's just not the same as playing a team game. Sure, you get to control the entire thing and you don't need to discuss strategy, but it's like team games for loners. I'd miss the jokes and jibes that go on in games with my clan, even if they are sometimes at my expense. That's what makes team games worth it.
I don't think it'll kill team games at all.
I hope serious clan wars avoid polymorph since they aren't really team games. Clans wouldn't have a purpose anymore. Won't happen. We are here to stay!
Love it, hate it, or somewhere in between, there is no doubt that many people see polymorph as a radically different option, not a cosmetic tweak but a completely new way of play that really does differ from previous game option. And some people definitely DO love it! Here's AAFitz at 8:55 pm on October 15th:Subject: The Polymorphic Death of Team GamesDoomYoshi wrote:Mr. Changsha sees polymorph as tapping into the team market. This may be true for some casual players.
I see polymorph as tapping into the 1v1 market: which is 50% of the games on the site. If both is the case, then we will see a huge rise in polymorph games, a slight deduction in 1v1 and a slight deduction in team games.
Polymorph will be a quick way to test team play settings and practice your basics. I think that the clan world will still attach prime importance to the Real McCoy.
And here's AAFitz only 11 hours later:AAFitz wrote:You just convinced me to buy premium.

Well, that's one happy customer! Here's hoping for ten thousand more!AAFitz wrote:I am not kidding when I say I already got my $25 worth of premium, this morning.
