SOP these days. Today, Obama announced that the Syrian government has "crossed the red line" and used chemical weapons on the rebels. Beginning now, the US will be providing direct support to the rebels. This includes military support.
Never mind that the UN has determined that the rebels have used chemical weapons against the Syrian government (i.e. people not on the rebels side) already.
Never mind that the rebels just two days ago executed a 14 year old boy for insulting Islam. The boy refused to bring coffee to a customer and said "Even if [Prophet] Mohammed comes back to life, I won’t.” An insult to Islam apparently that warranted being shot in the face.
Never mind that Al-Qaeda is also supporting the rebels.
Never mind that factions of rebels has pledged loyalty to aforementioned terrorist group.
Never mind that we are in debt to our eyeballs as a nation.
Never mind that the administration and the government is currently being rocked by scandal after scandal.
Never mind that we risk inciting Russia and China both.
It's time to bring some democracy to Syrian even if it means bringing it by the barrel of a gun, the bayonet or the smart bomb. Democracy will soon be thrust upon Syria, which is ironic since there is always plenty of thrusting when someone is getting fucked.
Now, I have little doubt that we can certainly bring about a demise to Assad and the rest of the Syrian government. That's the easy part. The hard part comes after that.
But since Syria is absolutely no threat to the US, it is not vital to our national interest (though we are certain to be told it is somehow), I've just got to wonder why? Who is going to be in charge after Assad is gone? Who is going to bear the financial cost of this? How many people are we going to kill and help to kill to bring this democracy? Is it worth it?
And I have one last question, who of you who support going to oust Assad are going to volunteer to go over there to Syria and get their hands dirty?
Now, of course, for the last question I have no doubt that our military men and women will being heading over there if so ordered, but I find it saddening how easy it is for people to support such action when they know they don't have to be the ones actually risking their lives and having to kill people (including the common innocents and collateral damage that accompany such endeavors) or deal with the aftermath themselves.
We've learned nothing and are even being led into yet another bog and TPTB are even using the same reasons as once before.
