ofcourse you have to realise the situation of each country.
what might seem torture and slavery to an englishman could very well be heaven on earth for somebody in a poor country.
natty dread wrote:"We were put to work without any training, and paid piecemeal," said one of the protesting workers, who asked not to be named. "The assembly line ran very fast and after just one morning we all had blisters and the skin on our hand was black. The factory was also really choked with dust and no one could bear it," he said.
If the workers are protesting, it doesn't seem like
they think it's "heaven on earth".

oh come on that's bullshit.
if i go on the street and ask random people if they're happy about their job they'll start to immediately complain, most of the time exaggerating. they'll complain about the amount of work about the hours and mostly about the pay. then if i ask them if they'd be willing to quit and look for something better they'll say "hell no"
and if i work at a newspaper i'll go and publish that those guys were protesters. let's be serious, the media (which you're so eager to quote) inflates facts and dramatizes as much as possible.
So, the workers say they don't like their conditions, you say it's heaven on earth for them.
The workers say they're protesting, you say they're not really protesting.
Oh... and because "media always lies" it doesn't matter what the news articles say.
Riiiiiiight.
most westerners i've met can't/won't understand how these things work because they haven't witnessed it. try going to a poor country for a month or so. even when confronted with clear facts they can't accept some things because not only they've never seen such poverty but they haven't even bothered to think about it before. they have no comparison they can't even imagine.
So, we stupid westerners cannot understand that when the workers say they are unhappy, it actually means they're having the time of their life.
so to me those people seem fairly happy if the suicide rate among the foxconn workers is 95% lower than the country's average.
Ok, well, next time you complain about something, I'm just going to say "hey, I can't take your complaint seriously - you still haven't killed yourself so you must be fairly happy".
the fact that foxconn bothered to install safety nets and hire counsellors only further proves that the working conditions there are far better than most of the other work places in china.
Right, it doesn't matter that the workers themselves say the conditions are horrible, and are protesting and threatening to commit suicide if the conditions don't improve.
That conditions in the rest of the country are bad, that other factories have poor conditions, is no excuse. Apple, et al. have money. They could raise the price of ipad for another 50$ and improve the conditions in their factories. The fanboys wouldn't mind, they'll pay whatever apple says blindly. But they just keep perpetuating a system that takes advantage of the conditions of developing countries and people's need of money there.
You know the entire lifestyle of western countries is unsustainable, right? We create way too much shit, we consume way too much shit that we throw away after it breaks (in most cases because stuff is designed to break these days, just so we can consume more shit) or we get bored of it, and the poor countries work their asses off to manufacture that shit for us. The entire process wastes huge amounts of resources, creates tons of pollution and waste, just so huge corporations can squeeze out a bit more profit.
but don't worry, keep reading misinformed bullshit and don't do research, it's easier this way. i had greater expectations from you since you're always saying you're not a trend follower, you're not a sheep in the flock, etc. you're a linux not a windows, a gimp not a photoshop etc.
well, you just proved that, at least on this matter, you're just like the rest of the masses.

a word of advice. never, ever hear/read/watch news and make judgements on the spot. do research then draw your conclusions. in many places (don't know about finland) the quest for exciting/outrageous headlines is far more important than the truth.
Ok, since you've obviously done all the research, show me the evidence you found that suggests that the workers aren't actually protesting?
