What fonts can be used in posting? Is there a list? Just certain subsets?

Fonts? You can't choose any fonts.

You can use any unicode characters in your posts, but they will only be displayed on other user's screens if they have the support for those unicode codepages installed. For example, the "thumb's up" glyph you posted isn't displayed correctly for me.

My point. The thumb's up is also wingding, same as all the stars (which I assume you can see), so apparently some subset of that font is available or however unicode is converted to something viewable. Do you mean there is a unicode font set CC uses? Or is this something only the programers of the BBS know about?

Those stars are cool - do you know of anything else of value in that subset?

And, if I have understood right, might it be that not everyone sees the stars?

Let's clear up some confusing terminology, shall we?

A typeface is a collection of one or more fonts. For example, Times New Roman is a typeface, which contains several fonts that are variations of the same typeface: Bold, Italic, etc. are fonts within the same typeface.

A font is a set of characters, where each character is assigned to a numerical value according to a certain character mapping standard, eg. unicode, ascii, iso, etc.

Windings is a dingbat font, ie. it doesn't follow any standard, instead it assigns small images called "dingbats" to letters at random.

Unicode is a standard which is a superset of the ascii standard. The unicode standard contains hundreds of thousands of character sets, which include not only our alphabet, but multiple alphabets from all around the world, and also various symbols, dingbats and icons, etc.

Now, most fonts these days follow the unicode standard in their character mapping. However, most fonts only use a certain subset of the unicode character set - depending on the application - because otherwise all fonts would be enormous.

When it comes to CC, you can post any unicode characters, but other people will only see those characters properly if they have installed fonts/typefaces which support those unicode characters. Otherwise, they'll see question marks, blocks with numbers, etc. instead.

Let's simplify a little.

Since posters cannot specify a font to be used then there is only a single font on this BBS.

The font on this BBS is: ?

If the font is custom (which I doubt as CC wouldn't care to make a custom font set) then there is probably no way of figuring it out. I've searched for "phpBB font" without useful results. Much reading to be sure, but not much results.

Arial or Helvetica, depending on the browser and OS.

The short answer is that it has very little to do with CC and more to do with your browser.

On my end it shows as Lucida Grande.

the g does not match with arial.

it looks to me like trebuchet MS. i'm using google chrome with windows 7 enterprise 64bit.

using firefox it appears to be the same font too.

I mean the font is specified as "Arial or Helvetica" on the HTML.

The font that is actually displayed in your end depends on your browser settings and what fonts you have installed.

In other words... the HTML is telling your browser to use Arial, Helvetica or "any sans-serif font", in that order of precedence. Whether your browser does what it says is another issue.

.content {
min-height: 3em;
overflow: hidden;
line-height: 1.4em;
font-family: "Lucida Grande", "Trebuchet MS", Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 1em;
color: #333333;
padding-bottom: 1px;
}

If you don't have Lucida Grande installed, it will show Trebuchet, and so on...

I do not see that in the HTML. I don't know what page you've taken that from...

I assume that content (text and such) is formatted by CSS, and that is where I found it. Anyway, moving on. ;)

☺☻♠♪ Lucida Console has a handful of special characters, nothing too interesting. Arial is about the same.
All the other Lucida I checked had nothing. ⅛Ж∫ Trebuchet MS has crap-all for fun.
Don't have Lucida Grande, Helvetica of any sort or sans-serif.

Last night we were able to view special characters like without having the same font installed on the computer. I have no idea which font his browser was substituting but it worked fine. Unless the BBS provides the font instead of the computer...

But now I'm curious if some people cannot see the skulls?

Your browser shows the characters that are not in the font that the webpage wants to use in another font which does have those characters.
