Can you derail your opponents?
You need to derail the train in front of you so that you can take its track position. However, the train behind you is trying to do the same thing to you..............

[spoiler=Track Layout]Two 1v1 games each round.
Rail Australia map; Automatic; Sequential; No Spoils; Chained & Fog.
The winner is the train that is the longest after 10 rounds. In the event of a tie, there will be a best of three play-off.

The 16 players will be sorted randomly and take their positions - as per the track diagram. You then have 2 games against your adjacent players. The winning players takes their opponent's track positions ready for the next round of two games.

For instance, the player randomly assigned to Train 2 position will play the players in Trains 1 and 3 positions. If he wins both, the next round he will play the winner of the game between Trains 15 and 16 and also the winner of the game between Trains 4 and 5 and still have Train 2 in reserve.[/spoiler]

I don't understand how players are eliminated? And which player do you play each round, first in front of you, and first behind? Sounds like we need more information here.

Still doesn't fully explain how you're eliminated, or how you change position... I'm guessing you have to lose both of your games in order to be out?

Yes, it is 1v1 so if you lose both you are out. If you win the one to the right you take on the next opponent in that direction next round - same on the left of course.

I have not seen this type of format, except that it's similar to the "avalanche" format that a recent tournament had, so I thought it would be fun to try. My worry is that it may go on for a while...

And the idea is that you'll end up possessing the entire "board", right? If you win both of your first 2 games, you then have 3 spots on the board. Which means you can lose both of your second round games, but still have one spot left, correct?

Yes - you win by occupying all positions - hence my concern that it may go on for a while!

Also correct on the additional "train" - and I have added a comment to this effect. There are two options - the other is to still have just two chances, and be just 2 losses away from defeat every round despite earlier wins. I think this option would be more suitable as say "Collision on Route 66" with cars instead of trains!

Thanks for the feedback; having thought that it was straight forward, I should know by now that anything slightly different needs a lot of explanation!
