An Atheist Christmas

Post by Symmetry »

I am, I feel, not alone in worrying that that atheists forget the true meaning of Christmas-

Although I am an atheist, I'm also concerned that Christians sometimes forget the true meaning behind the Winter Solstice .

Mostly, however, this thread came from a simple question from a Christian friend of mine who wanted to know how I could celebrate Christmas as an atheist.

The thing is, of course, that he spends mosts of Christmas buying presents, cooking, eating, drinking, spending time with family...

basically all the same pagan stuff that happened this time of year before Christianity in the name of lost gods, and that I do now in the name of no god.

This is likely one of my nowhere threads, and I do like a bit of a ramble sometimes. But really, atheist Christmas is the best.

I always suspected that you were the kind of guy to spend Christmas with your family.

Actually, I don't think these holiday activities occurred before Christmas existed.

True there has always been a Winter Solstice celebrated by pagans throughout history; but there has also been celebrations for the Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox. Whether you believe Jesus was a real person or not, celebrating his birthday, there is a good chance it would fall in during one of the main pagan celebrations.

The only difference at Christmas for a Christian and for an atheist, is that the Christian is afraid there is coal in their stocking, and the atheist is afraid there is a soul in them.

Ill assume you mean since the church systematically took over all pagan celebrations and replaced them with oneS of their own?

The only difference between Christian and Atheist Christmas is practicing Christians have to go to church on Christmas Eve, sing a bunch of songs they hate, hold some candles, and hear some of the children in the congregation recite the myth they all believe (or pretend to, or at least don't vocally contradict so they have an opportunity to network with powerful people further up in their industry, which is the entire point of going to church in the first place -- getting on the same golf course at the same time). Atheist Christmas doesn't require that.

Wait. I thought atheists all got together and toasted each other with bottles of scotch to discuss how intelligent and reasoned they were, while at the same time mocking Christians? Isn't that what atheists do at Christmas? At least, that's what I think my atheist friends do.

Or do they eat Chinese food and see a movie? Is that just Jews? Do atheists mock Jews? How about Muslims? Is it just Christians that they mock at their dinner party/scotch drinking/orgies?

You could always just ignore it and do your own thing. The only Christmas posts dealing with religion that I saw this year were from non-religious folks.

TGD, get serious. Bottles of scotch and an atheist orgy with a movie in the background with Chinese food on the side? You had me at "Wait."

Other than the orgy, that's pretty much my Christmas.

It depends, some groups try to spread the mockery around fairly evenly, others prefer to have a rotating schedule for which religion to mock in any given year which allows for far more in-depth ridicule. The groups that prefer to mock only one or very few religions are often considered narrow-minded by us more enlightened atheists.

Chinese food and a movie are optional but always well-liked, the Scotch is required. I got a Glenfiddich for the occasion.

Wait a minute... Atheist Christmas? There is no such thing.
A holiday to celebrate with all the other revelers? Sure,
but not Christmas.

Then again maybe atheists should celebrate Christmas
because they wouldn't exist without it.

If Jesus wasn't conceived what else could they not believe in?
Do atheists say "Oh God... oh God... oh Oh Yes! Yes! Yes!
during sex?

That obviously depends upon how good the sex is...or bad, depending upon your point of view.

You seem to have a lot of animosity towards atheists.

In any case, no true GOOD God would disallow His followers to drink a good scotch, so if you have the means, I highly suggest, picking one up.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. Regardless of their deep held beliefs, enjoy the day, and make the world a better place. That's really all its about in the end anyways.

Sadly I was raised sort of Christian-ish, so I am to this day forced to do the whole family thing for Christmas. I would so much rather attend a movie and an orgy, or a movie about an orgy, Chinese food is always good. I do however much prefer bourbon to scotch, but if my choice is between scotch and sober, well pass me the scotch.
