You would think General Mojo would have kept that in mind before he decided to make a blanket statement about moderators. Oh well, such is life.

So you want credit for unlocking a thread that you inappropriately locked?

Of course he does, he is a mod. So hungry for attention, credit and kudos. The mod locks, and the mod takes the lock away, the mod then takes a bow. All praise the mod......

Credit is due to the hellenic canine, not many mods would dare admit that they may have made an error(their fragile self esteem would suffer). So lets all join together in saying "GOOD DOG". Give him a pat on the head. Someone other than myself could even give him a bone.

No, I don't want credit for unlocking a thread I inappropriately locked (for like two hours). I don't want acknowledgement at all in fact.

Let's summarize:

(1) You comment that moderators are something negative (to be honest, I didn't read your post).
(2) I comment that it would be nice if that comment weren't made considering certain moderators' past actions (mostly mine, mostly this thread).
(3) You comment that I want credit.

It's not that I want credit. I was shocked... flabbergasted... utterly dismayed... to see you make a negative comment about moderators in this thread, of all threads. I don't want credit, I want to be left alone. I don't want any positive or, more importantly, negative comments made about moderators... especially in this thread. Perhaps you've confused the word "credit" with the phrase "leave us alone."

EDIT - Also, you might want to read my initial thoughts, which seem relevant here. In case you don't want to scroll back, I said that I'm patronized on a daily basis. Your reaction appears to be in line with my initial thoughts.

No, not credit... to quote an American football player, "Keep my name out yo mouf."

In other words, negative comments about moderators are unnecessary from General Mojo in this particular thread.

You know you have sunk to the real the depths of obsessive sadness when you find yourself checking CC while you are with a whore. Or even two.

I, and this is true by the way, once sat in brothel (of sorts*) directing a complicated trips move over the phone, while negotiating the price of various services and oils at the same time. Looking back (and it was a couple of years ago), one can see so many things wrong with that picture... the most important of which is that I was prepared to general a clan game without studying the map. This, more than anything else, shows why I am not cut out for an uber clan.

*While Changsha is literally brimming with the kinds of places that would remind you all of scenes from the very best of the vietnam war movies...and by god I tried them out...I gradually moved on to the kind of soft core, bikini-clad massage joints that left one if not entirely satisfied, then at least morally feeling slightly less reprehensible. Sadly these days I am quite reformed...and am able to pass the brothel that just happens to be next door to my building (seriously) without so much as a glance.

And yes, to clear up any doubt, your locking of this thread highlights exactly what is wrong with the moderators. You guys have utterly destroyed the forums and made this website way less enjoyable for the vast majority of its members. Whether you want to come to terms with that or not is totally up to you.

You inappropriately closed a GD thread before there was a single response. I pointed out that this type of behavior by the mods has by and large killed the forums. If you want to be "left alone," maybe you and your fellow moderators should start doing the same with respect to the CC membership community.

Or, at a minimum, if you want to be left alone just don't do stupid things that draw attention to your incompetence....

Man, you're tough on the moderators.

I believe the thread was locked for over two hours. I know that likely helped to kill the general discussion forums for at least those two particular hours, and likely contributed to the destruction of a bunch of other forums too.

And not to be nitpicky (I'm sure that's a moderator thing too, so I apologize in advance), but you didn't actually type "this type of behavior by the mods has by and large killed the forums." You accused moderators of being cyberjocks (in other words, internet bullies). Does locking a thread for two hours and then unlocking it contribute to one being a cyberjock?

And not to get into grand ideas here or anything, but you could always, you know, create your own threads to discuss what you want to discuss. I've heard other people make the point that the forums are dead and/or moderators killed them. They don't appear to be dead to me.

Finally, and this is completely up to you and Mr. Changsha (who created this thread), because I don't want to derail any further, but if you would like to have a frank discussion about what moderators should and should not do, we can do so over pm or we can do so in this thread or another thread. I've offered to have this frank discussion with others who have voiced similar concerns about moderators killing the five million forums we have on this website. No one has yet taken me up on the offer. Perhaps you can be the first?

But jefjef, that's what a cyberjock would do! And as I'm trying to prove, all moderators are not cyberjocks.

My initial comment was not focused on you or your locking of this thread. You are the one that took it personally and made it about you with your response. It was only then that I pointed out that you seem to have a similar mindframe based on your inappropriate locking of this thread before a single response had been made.

And yes, the gestapo-like presence of the cc mods has killed these forums. They are very much dead when compared to the content and posting community of when I first joined this website...

I am of course perfectly happy to have such a discussion in this thread.

General Mojo wrote:And yes, the gestapo-like presence of the cc mods has killed these forums. They are very much dead when compared to the content and posting community of when I first joined this website...

Without wanting to create a BpB civil war ;) , I'm afraid I disagree with mojo..at least to some extent. Part of the fun of posting here (at least for me) is that one does have to consider the rules, one does have to take into account that a post can get you banned, one does have to think carefully about posting something with regards to the likely moderator response. There is something quite delicious about posting something on the edge of accepted propriety: flaming and baiting but doing so quite indirectly and carefully..challenging the moderators to censure you, knowing that actually they really don't want to...assuming that in general you stay within the lines.

I'd be bored to tears in a forum where anything goes, the joy is, as I said, in stretching rules to their limit. My point is one needs the rules.

I think some of the posters mojo misses (and I miss them too) weren't prepared to see it in that way. And yes, GD is arguably a less enjoyable place to visit than formerly. But some of those excellent posters who took the view that 'If I can't say "f*ck your cunting mother" then I'm not going to write here anymore' (or if they can't spend their days challenging CC for that matter) did themselves a disservice. One can write rude, appalling stuff here, the trick is to not bully the weak, to remember that direct flames are rarely all that clever and that attacking the very fabric of the site (of which the moderators are a part) probably does have an overall negative effect on it. One doesn't want unthinking positivity, but the argument could be made that relentless negativity directed towards CC doesn't exactly help this forum either.

Finally, I think good new posters have arrived over the last couple of years. I wouldn't say GD is thriving, but that has more to do with the fact that while CC has its share of hardcore players, so few of them make the effort to try and write about CC engagingly. Mojo would probably state that this is due to the moderation of the site. I'm not so sure...I personally believe it has more to do with that most clans have little interest in having posters join their ranks. If clans are the future of the site (and they probably are), then clans should have members that are primarily posters..to help keep the site fresh. Few have done so at the top end, which is why I think GD is often terribly boring. If GD is about CC and CC is now about clans, and the top clans have few members either capable or willing to write engagingly, then it is not surprising that GD is often dull.

So I honestly don't blame the moderators for the fact that GD is often unreadable these days. I think they were at fault in the past..but the current group is in my view pretty good. I blame the fact that so few of CC's hardcore have any interest in writing about the game, the site or their clans in GD. And that has less to do with the moderators, and much more to do with the recruitment policies of many clans..that sees the ability to play as paramount, and ignores the fact that this site is about far more than just clan competitions. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the best players are often not the wittiest fellows around.

Might I interject? Thank you.

As the psychological founder of Cyber-Jock Syndrome, I would like to publicly declare my recent breakthroughs in this new and exciting field of research!

After intensely studying the cracks between the linoleum tiles of my bathroom walls, I then realized that all Greeks--whether they are of the homosapien variety or of the canine variety--have a strong tendency to become victims of cyber-jock syndrome simply because of their genetic traits. These traits are unsurprisingly similar to the common attributes of Greek jocks in the RL:

(1) copious amounts of body hair
(2) an inexplicable disposition toward naked man-wrestling
(3) the occasional desire to soak oneself in a copper tub of olive oil
(4) the strong desire to inflict harm upon others only when wearing a skirt (see: 300, and google "WW2 Greek Military Uniform")

Whenever you communicate with a Greek Cyber-Jock, keep in mind that they might embody one of the above traits; however, be extremely fearful of the chance of communicating with a Greek Cyber-Jock who might be very hairy, has recently viewed videos of naked man-wrestling, smells strongly of olive oil, and is wearing a skirt. Tread very, very lightly through the fora, which is their traditional stomping grounds.*

*"Unlike the later imperial fora in Rome — which were self-consciously modeled on the ancient Greek plateia (πλατεία) public plaza or town square — the Roman Forum developed gradually, organically and piecemeal over many centuries." -wikipedia

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

As for the eternal debate of "meh, mods are bad"

I thought we already had this battle... The mods readjusted their policies indirectly, and so have we. The atrocities of mod-inflicted genocide are years old, and in the long-run, mod-violence has greatly decreased after excessive modding became increasingly unacceptable. The people spoke, and their words were heeded--especially regarding issues of excessive moderation and Flame Wars--aw shucks, majority rule. <folds arms> <pout> <pout> <pout>

Currently, a few mods have highly emotional issues or are inexperienced, but most of them are able to learn if we are willing to be reasonable and if we openly communicate with them in a classy fashion--or in an similarly antagonistic fashion without being visibly antagonistic. That has worked in the past, and it will work again.

The following should be reflected upon:

Mr Changsha wrote:Part of the fun of posting here (at least for me) is that one does have to consider the rules, one does have to take into account that a post can get you banned, one does have to think carefully about posting something with regards to the likely moderator response. This has been my policy in the fora as well. Anybody can get banned for saying something stupid or for blatantly breaking some other rule, but not everyone can assess the mods' limits while subtly hovering along the breaking point.

If the system changes and if you cannot revert it, then get creative, cry about it, or get creative while crying about it.

For two hours. Until I had a forum conversation (CRAZYIRISHMAN!) and a pm conversation. And while I did take it personally (because it's in this particular thread), I really don't care all that much. I understand the attraction of lashing out against "authority" (as if the moderators have some sort of authority over you or anyone else) so it didn't surprise me, but as I told Mr. Changsha I like to argue (or discuss if we want to be polite). BBS had it right - I sit here, all hairy and naked, bathed in olive oil, ready to wrestle other naked, hairy Greek men... I just like to wrestle using words. I think your frustration is misdirected; not misdirected at me, but misdirected at the moderators generally. But, like I said, it's attractive to be anti-authority, even if the moderators have changed (either actually changed or changed in their "CC-view").

General Mojo wrote:And yes, the gestapo-like presence of the cc mods has killed these forums. They are very much dead when compared to the content and posting community of when I first joined this website...

What content was in the General Discussion forum when you first joined the website? What content would you like to see return? It would be awfully useful for those questions to be answered. The gestapo-like moderators may not be here anymore, or their views may have changed, and the thread topics that you fell in love with could possibly be returned. Unfortunately, I do not know the answers to those questions; as far as I can tell the only difference from when I joined is that Flame Wars is gone and there is a forum games forum.

Seeing as though I rarely post anymore, I am not the right person to talk to about improving the forums. The ship largely has sailed for me at this point. Put simply, the mods ran out the best posters with their power trips and 6-month bans and all of that ridiculousness.

There remains, however, hypocrisy and bias amongst your ranks that is quite sad. You guys locked our CC challenge thread with THOTA because we hurt their feelings. Meanwhile, in C and A, a THOTA member brings ludicrous accusations against our own Mr. C, and another member pops in to flame him numerous times, yet no action is taken.

If you want to weild your tough guy internet mod powers, at least apply them uniformly. I mean it took a wholesale community revolt before you guys were willing to enforce the rules against the mighty Blitzaholic, yet you hand out forum bans like they are candy to BpB members for daring to speak of that anti-blitz ruling.

Again, the ship largely has sailed for me...but if you want the respect of the newer and incoming members of CC, theres some advice for you.

Oh, and as to your whole "but I only locked the thread for two hours" defense.....you totally miss the point.

The problem is that upon reading the thread your initial instinct was to lock it down, and you acted on that instinct. In fact, you admit that you didn't even contemplate unlocking it until another CC member brought your inappropriate actions to your attention.

So no, you don't get kudos for unlocking the thread. If you want to be "left alone" as you claim, then just don't lock the thread to begin with....not all that hard of a concept.

You can barely call yourself a forum heavyweight with little under 300 posts. Furthermore it seems the whole powertripping-hypocrite-biased rant is just some sour grapes about your recent clan war, the more-than-expected locking of the accompanying thread and Changsa's deliberate deadbeating in aforementioned challenge. BpB doesn't seem all that bulletproof at the moment.
