More Functional Wall

Postby Dukasaur on Sun Jun 12, 2011 1:38 am

Make the player's profile wall more functional by adding a personal Forum page

Specifics/Details:
A new space would be inserted in between the Medal Details and the Wall part of the player's profile page. This would essentially be a link to a permanent personal post in a special subdirectory of the forum. Unlike the wall, it would support full use of BBcode including hyperlinks, image tags, etc.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
I think players would like to have more space to do things like talk about their interests, brag about their accomplishments, list tournaments they have run or are currently recruiting for, list maps they are working on, and in general talk about their opinions or social interests. A lot of people already put such things in their signature, but the size limitations of the signature severely hamper its usefulness. If I want to have advertise a tournament in my signature, for instance, I basically need to delete the quote that is there now. If I wanted to join some Social Groups or a Clan, I would again have to choose which to advertise; there just isn't enough space to do justice to more than one aspect of one's overall CC experience.

Having a personal page to list all of those things simultaneously would be very welcome, I think.

i don't see the benefits that you do

having a revamped userpage that allows you to put valuable information is useless if no one visits it. putting links in your sig is the only way to know that info will be seen - at least by forum goers.

It's a neat idea, but I think my sentiments are similar to greenoaks'. I may post with people in the forums frequently, but not often do I read what is on one's profile. Even if I'm walling somebody, I generally will only read their wall and nothing more. You could wall yourself, or fit information into your sig and profile if you'd like, but I have difficulty seeing enough benefits to warrant this suggestion's implementation.

This is a cool idea. I always wanted some palce where I could just tell everybody some certain things, like tournaments and such that I just couldn't fit in my sig. But having each player have his own forum page would cost a lot in memory, and it would take some time to porgram that. Or so I think.

I don't think it would be a lot of space at all. Basically, I envision it as occupying one post in the Forum, with the size limitations that a Forum post currently has. So 25,000 members would be about the same as adding 25,000 posts in the Forum, about 1/8 of the number of posts currently being stored in the GD forum or about 1/34 of what is currently stored in Shroedinger's Catbox.

The part on your profile page might look like a lot, but that would be an illusion. The actual part stored in your profile would just be a long integer (4 bytes, I believe, although it's been a while since I studied computers) pointing to a page number in the Forum.

Possibly, if he had a lot of stuff on his page. But the loading times even for very big Forum pages don't seem all that bad, with broadband anyway. People on dial-up might find it a pain, but then people on dial-up find most websites a pain. There might be something you can check in preferences to not load anything with bigimg tags, perhaps.

Although I think it's great that you envision 25,000 new forum pages for people personal profiles, I don't think the majority of people would actually use them. I agree that for some, this suggestion really helps them out, it's just I can't see the vast majority of people using this feature. Is your main complaint that you just don't have enough space in general? Or is it more that you want to advertise your tournaments that you are running as well as have your usual stuff? If so, would it be solved if there were a smaller addition to the profile page? Perhaps something like a link or somehow list the tournaments you are currently hosting?

A lot might not. But you could say that about any feature the site has. A lot of people don't read the Forums. A lot of people don't play in tournaments. A lot of people don't participate in special contests. A lot of people don't play speed games. And so on, and so forth.

I only cited 25,000 to answer the person who thought it was too much load for the site. It's useful putting that in perspective against the number of Forum posts that are being stored.

I was trying to think of everybody. Yes, my primary reason for wanting this would be to advertise future tournaments and brag about past tournaments. But someone who is into some other aspect of the site might use it for something else. Some of the political activists in the off-topics forum might use it to showcase their favourite political argument. Some people might just use it to post a giant picture of themselves, one that doesn't have the limitations of the avatar. I can see someone using it to showcase Suggestions that they support and have supported.

That's why I suggested using the Forum format, because BBcode is really flexible. If you design something specifically for me, it might be useless to someone else. Leaving it fairly open to multiple purposes would be better.
