Good for him. I wrestled for 8 years, and I would refuse too. I would be furious at the people who let her join.

Why? If she's good enough then she's good enough. The way he handled it was good. I kind of skimmed, but the reason he gave was because it conflicted with his religious beliefs, not because she was a girl and he was being sexist in saying "I'm better than you and I don't want to hurt you" (maybe I'm wrong, but this is what I got out of it).

Nothing to see here, move along.

Yeah, I wrestled for one year, and honestly, I wouldn't feel comfortable wrestling with a girl.

Just thought it was interesting. Maybe could spark some conversation. I don't know what about, but whatever.

Nah, that's pretty much what he said. His father said some other stuff, but basically the same thing. I think the main reason was it's not right to subject a girl to that kind of physical contact, with suplexes and submission moves and whatnot. Those are my words, not his, but basically the same.

oh. No it's not cool because wrestling takes a lot of mental preparation. Wrestling a girl would be akin to your opponent wearin a feather boa, or having extremely foul body odor. Just that something is different will throw you off. If a wrestler truly is able to rise above the problem of "boyhood and how they feel about girls at 16 years old", then he is going to see through the bullshit, and most likely whip the shit out of her. It's the same reason why, if he did whip the shit out of her, people in the crowd would be oohing and ahhing and men would get a pinch of a protective feeling (my theory that men have a natural instinct to protect a woman if they see someone hurting her)because it's different to the crowd also. If it was just some due getting whooped, so wut. Hope his makes sense. Woody, don't even think about it.

Also, it's not so much about being good enough. It's mainly about recognizing the differences between men and woman, which are vast. Plus, letting girls wrestle just leads to dumb shit like this. Girls don't get to go to boy scouts. I know there isnt a female wrestling team, but that says a lot right there.

Would you be worried about getting your ass kicked by someone of another gender?

I can see where the kid is coming from, but I have seen girls on wrestling teams before (only a few, but still some).

In my martial arts class, I have grappled with those of the opposite sex. The difference though, is that it is not as fast paced as wrestling is (did wrestling for a little bit in high school, before a knee surgery), so you can think about what you're going to do instead of reacting and causing a bit of an awkward moment. Though, those can still happen. Plus, less chance of actually hurting them.

Just my 2 cents.
"Eh, whatever."

Some call that chivalrous, I call it simply rude and small minded. That girl had to train hard to get there, harder I would bet then any of the guys who were there. It was her decision to get into a martial sport like wrestling and to deny a person a chance to fight? IMO the guy should be treated like he did that in my sport of choice, fencing. If he pulled a stunt like that on a fencing strip he would have been kicked from the tournament, and if I was a high level tournament, barred from retuning for a set length of time. I have no idea how that girl ended up doing in the tournament, but no matter how well she did the boy left her victories hollow, as she was not given the opportunities to earn her standing in the tournament.

Piss poor sportsmanship on the boys part.

Ohhh its OK to hit a girl... COMON those from the states that actually respect female gender learn this growing up, don't ever hit a girl or youll get your ass kicked... this would be going back on everything this boy has ever learned growing up... He did a good job. If that girl wants to be a wrestler let her wrestle in a girls / womans league? some sports just don't look good when mixing the genders.. IMO

Why is it ok for a woman to hit a man but it's never ok for a man to hit a woman?

Simplistic explanation...survival of the species...women keep the race alive....if we guys get hit bad by a woman then there's many more to take our place and the beat goes on...basic but true

While I respect the kid's right to make this choice, this just doesn't make any logical sense to me. I understand the religious aspect for him personally, but IT'S A FREAKING SPORT!

Come out of the dark ages. Girls have been wrestling for ages now. My sister wrestled back in the early 80s when it was actually unusual. She did not have a single boy refuse to wrestle her even back then...I guess guys were tougher in those days.

And before you come out with the "you don't know what it's about" shit, I wrestled from the age of about six through high school. I was the primary reason my sister was interested in the sport.

It's chivalrous to disrespect your opponent because of their gender?

Uh...what? It's WRESTLING. At most, from a "hitting a girl" standpoint, a crossarm is going to happen. And aside from that, it's a sport that the girl is VOLUNTARILY PARTICIPATING IN.

Except those leagues don't exist...so tough shit for her, amirite? Stop being afraid to lose to a girl, guys!

"Many more to take our place"...from a survivalistic standpoint (which in this day and age is stupid, by the way), what exactly is the gender ratio, I suppose?

The fact of the matter is, it SHOULD be just as bad for a woman to hit a man as for a man to hit a woman...thinking otherwise makes no rational sense. However, to try to apply something like that to a sport that someone is voluntarily participating in is ludicrous.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT BEING AFRAID TO HIT A GIRL

ITS ABOUT GROWING UP TO THE TEACHING "DO NOT HIT A GIRL"

You equate domestic violence with a sport in which the girl is voluntarily participating?

Also, why is it more wrong to "hit a girl" than it is to "hit a boy"? I should think that it should be wrong to hit anyone, regardless of gender, period.

Let's move on from stone age, folks.

He wasn't being chivalrous he was just afraid that he was gong to pop a boner during the match. He came up with the moral excuse to avoid embarrassment.

Also duh. It's a sport don't be stupid. You're allowed to hit a girl if she wants to be be hit. And don't give me this lesson crap. People play paint ball but that doesn't teach people that it's ok to go around shooting people.

This is a lose/lose situation for the boy.

I need not remind anyone that just a few weeks ago another high school wrestler was convicted of sexual assault against another wrestler during a match. He did something called a "butt drag" or something or other, and it seems the other wrestler took offense to it.

This kid has to wrestle a female. If he wins, what does he win? He beat a girl.
If he loses, he faces untold amounts of mocking from fellow classmates.

That kid will have to put his hands all over that girl's tits, ass, crotch.

The girl should do proper female wrestling, in a pit of Jello against another girl, with both wearing bikinis! :D =D>

Oh, so beating a girl in sports is somehow less valuable than beating a boy?

Really?

Convicted?

If this is true it's nutty.

You got a link?

Anyone know what a "butt drag" is??? Is it common? Is it an illegal move?

I remember this story. First, it was in practice. Second, he shoved his hand up the other guy's ass.
