"dirty jobs" and "Mythbusters" are both pretty entertaining.
For pure "fun", I like Criminal minds, though it has started to drag (and I definitely don't watch it regularly).
Most of my TV watching is confined to "before 9PM and child-friendly", though.
Oops, almost forgot "Sons of Guns". If you are into cars, there is another one just after where some guys in Arizona restore old junkyard cars and sell them. They both started, so not sure how they will develop, but "so far, so good". (I tape them for my son and then watch them after school.)
from the US;
The Wire
Deadwood
Band Of Brothers
Generation Kill
Sledge Hammer
from the UK;
The Thick Of It
Dead Set
Psychoville
Doctor Who (can be very hit & miss, but the latest series is mostly good)
League Of Gentlemen
Red Dwarf
Yes Minister
Still Game (although foreigners might have trouble with their thick Glaswegian accents)
I find the worst thing about getting invested in a television show, is that by the 3rd or 4th season, it ends up losing a lot of its charm. I really enjoyed Dexter up until this current season. Same goes for Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother.
House never seems to get old for me though. And if you want to try something on the fringe, watch Primeval. Doctor Who is awesome as well.
In no particular order (and some have been mentioned)... I will say these are all shows that no longer appear live (mrs. thegreekdog and I only watch shows on DVD or Netflix):
(1) Band of Brothers
(2) The Pacific
(3) The Wire (yes, it's that good)
(4) Battlestar Galactica
(5) The Practice (and then Boston Legal)
(6) West Wing
Band of Brothers (nice catch greek)
NCIS (only cop show I have ever liked, and it is good)
Mythbusters (great show all-round)
Pawn Stars (learn some interesting things from history)
Go to Blockbuster, or whatever movie rental place, or use netflix, get the 4 seasons that are already out. The fifth season comes out on DVD sometime this month.

It's a badass show.
Did you notice all the anti-right wing rhetoric? ONLY CURIOUS

Ooh, how the hell did I forget that. They were both very good, and also very very different.
Boston Legal obly pissed me off because they never got Eugene(?) from the Practice as a guest star in an episode, they set it up so nicely when the Practice ended too ...

If i don't own a TV does that mean I have to buy one and smash it to begin my journey towards knowledge?

Yup, I did. But it didn't bother me. It could have been anti-left wing rhetoric, and I wouldn't have cared. I watch that show for the comedy, and badass characters that have been developed. It's an awesome show, regardless of the rhetoric. Plus Nancy Botwin is the ultimate MILF.
It's so boring. Of course everyone I know loves it (brothers, friends) because they all have a fascination with WWII. It's sooooo boring though.
What?
I don't even ...
Boring?!?
This was also my reaction, but I couldn't reply the way I would like without violating various website rules regarding flaming. Such is the life of a poor moderator... sigh.

I watched season 1 of Deadwood and liked it but could never get into the second season...maybe because I missed an episode...
