THE ARMY interesting poll #20

Post by THE ARMY »

Hello all. Would you like to find more about how people think?

Well from this week foward i will create a new poll topic. All you have to do is caste your vote. You don't even have to keep checking on the topic for i will post the results next week in poll #21. Each poll will be open for 1 week.

Its pretty self explanatory, good luck!

Believe it or not these polls do tell us a lot about the mind.

:geek:
(by the way i dont wear glasses)

I voted for literacy. I like history the most, but I feel most comfortable with reading and writing.

Interesting that foreign languages is not an option... You can tell the OP is American, because learning foreign languages is not really emphasized in our country... Anyway, i voted...-the black jesus

I was required to take a foreign language in high school and in college (10+ years ago). I bet foreign language education in the U.S. has improved since then (I hope).

Does social science fall under science?

Seriously, I'm asking.

No.

I remember something from 7th grade history...there were 8 realms of social science: anthropology, psychology, sociology, history, geography, physiology, economics and political science

I highly disagree with this. In school, we're mandated to take 2 years of foreign language and most of the colleges that we apply to are saying it's highly recommended. Unless Michigan is on the high end of the learning curve (which I highly doubt), then this can't be too uncommon.

Hm probably math or science. Depends on the science though. I'm much better at chemistry and biology/genetics than physics. I feel strong with literacy and history as well. I'm shit with social studies.

:) See I told you.

No I think I'm only good with history because I find it interesting. The rest of the social studies you posted earlier don't appeal to me, with the exception of linguistics. For instance, I am terrible with geography. I know it's sad, but I couldn't name all 50 states of the U.S. on a map if they weren't already, or even repeat them all.

Son of a bitch. I memorized all 50 state locations and capitals in 5th grade. I memorized the location of every country in all continents but Oceania (because those islands are fuckers) (also, I did the gist of Africa. Africa is hard as f*ck) in 10th grade.

Physical education is kind of vague. Does that mean athleticism or like...coaching ability? Though that would be pretty subjective.

Yeah I did that too, but forgot them probably 1 day after the test.

No way I could even come close to that.

There are tricks to the smaller countries. In the Eastern Baltic (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) they go northeastern in alphabetical order.

You're American, why would you even wanna know where Estonia is. You know their capitals as well (I do, but I was forced)? No offense to any Estonians, but I could drive to that country today and it wouldn't make me or any Estonians happier persons.
I don't see the value in knowing all these countries. You can show these kids CC and they'll know the world in no time. Learning languages is okay, you can actually use that.

Perhaps I'm biased, since my best subjects were clearly French, German and English. I wonder if the OP will change the poll. American do have the opportunity to learn these languages as well, right?

Obviously I don't need to know it. And I know Tallinn is the capital but Idk about Latvia or Lithuania. I've had an obsession with geography but I never really saw a career in it.

And I think the norm is, in public school you generally learn one foreign language; either French or Spanish (I know French pretty well) but in private schools you have a chance to learn more.

My school has German, French, Spanish, and Japanese. I doubt many public schools of my size (<1200) have other languages than that. I have heard of Chinese, and Latin in private schools, but I don't think they are common. Chinese may be on the rise though, but again I don't know.

Foreign Languages goes under Literacy, which includes the subjects of reading and writing. Notice how I did not put 'English' as a category and instead but Literacy to encompass all.

I purposely made History seperate from Social Studies because I believe it should be seperated. It might include Sociology and Psychology but I believe those subjects, and others inlcuded in 'social studies' more based on science and not just on 'past events'. Also the reason I did not want to included these social sciences from natural sciences is because even though they include the word science, they are entirely different studies.

Also, Physical Education is 'physical' not 'coaching'. It refers to ones muscle memory. An example being Professional Athletes have great muscle memory.

I eventually want to find out what top players are best at, i.e. math, science, art etc. etc.

History here.

And I'm exactly the same as AoG when it comes to geography. Africa and Oceana are hard as hell. I can gist them both with the more prominent nations, but don't make me do them by flag. I've always had an interest in Geography. I think that goes hand in hand with my love of history though.
