For smoothing the lines using Gimp - can't remember if this is what I did but I think it worked for me.
Select all your borders - try doing a select by colour on black, hopefully your text is in a different layer so it won't pick that up - copy then paste as a new layer, use one of the blur filters (like Gaussian blur), then play with the levels on that new layer so all the greys become full black. Its the same font in both.. and I realized that the words in the key weren't black I am changing that back.
