Absolutely! I mean look at all that has happened since 1994. For instance, we aren't listening to Ace of Base anymore - that's progress.
The story line is very funny, but 98% of those who could potentially play the map will never read it. The US Apocalypse map takes a similar approach, but you don't need a long intro - you read that it is US Apocalypse, and you get the basic idea.
I think you can do a near future map and make it work if you settle on one universal idea and run with it. Three possibilities:
1. You could do a "US Hegemony" map and make every part of the world a US colony... the middle east could be "Bush Country." Asia and the third world could be split up between US corporations competing for cheap labor. Europe could be shit like "France, brought to you by Disney." India is "Microsoft Tech Support." etc.
2. A "Global Warming" map. Land masses are smaller, islands are under water. Everything on the equator is useless desert with unpassable borders, and Norway is tropical paradise. Antartica is developed and valuable for it's fresh water supply.
3. "World Apocalypse" using the same principles as the US Apoc. map - hot zones, radiation bonuses and minuses.
It's a fun idea to make a future map - just make the idea simple if you want people to understand what they're playing on.
