Floyd is out driving in his convertible one sunny afternoon, and is surprised by how few cars are on the road. As he pulls into an intersection, he is startled by the sound of a police siren starting up. He has a split-second moment of confusion, wondering what he could have done. As the car leaves the intersection, he looks up, sees the green light he is passing underneath, and realizes what he did wrong. He pulls over to the side of the road, and does not argue when Officer Bob writes him a ticket. What was Floyd's traffic offense?

Oh, well said!
Here's another puzzle, then:
A Petri dish hosts a healthy colony of bacteria. Once a minute every bacterium divides into two. The colony was founded by a single cell at noon. At exactly 12:43 (43 minutes later) the Petri dish was half full. At what time will the dish be full?
Three guys go into a hotel and ask for a room to share. The manager is out to lunch, so the bell hop decides to book the room for them. He tells them that the price is $30, so they all give him $10 each, and head off to their room. When the manager returns he discovers that the bell hop had overcharged them $5, as the room only costs $25. He hands the bell hop 5 one dollar bills and tells him to go up and return them their money. Not being too bright the bell hop is confused as how to divide the $5 three ways, so he gives them $1 each, and pockets the remaining $2. Now here is the question... If the three men originally paid $10 each and got back a dollar, that means that they actually paid $9 each. So, 3 X $9 = $27, plus $2 the bell hop kept = $29. What happened to the other dollar ?

It's all about what it's adding. It should actually be 3 x $9 (that they paid) + $3 (that they didn't pay) = $30. In other words, the $2 the bellhop kept is part of the $27 that they paid.

OK I can see that the correct answer has been skirted by the last 2 posters, so I will just tell what I was after.
It is all about my wording, and how it is possible to deceive some people with apparent logic. Before you can calculate any math problem, you must first have a clear question. Although all of my math was correct, There was never any clear question set forth to begin with. This allowed me to lead you down any path that I could trick you into following. By me adding the three 9s, and then adding the 2, you are inclined to believe that I am trying to get back to the original 30. When in fact I should have subtracted the 2. That would leave us at 25, which is in fact what they paid for the room.
