owenshooter wrote:wow... that initial list is kind of funny... how can you appreciate rock n' roll if you have no idea where it came from? i understand this is musicians/bands of all time, but to leave out an entire genre that influenced most of your list that was born in the 50's and beyond is just short sighted... quick short list:
bessie smith, w.c. handy, b.b. king, t-bone walker, muddy waters, john lee hooker, lonnie johnson, ROBERT JOHNSON, son house, freddie king, blind lemon, albert king, billie holiday...
pick up a blues record sometime, you'd be shocked at how many of your favorite riffs are simply sped up blues standards...-0
Owenshooter.....I completely agree with you........
This why we are putting a list together. I define influential as (but not limited to) people who helped in the creation or created a style of music; also those who's influence directly resulted in a fundamental change in the industry (this may include producers and song writers too if necessary). This definition can be
influenced to change if so desired.....This list is of ALL TIME, so therein lies the difficulty. There are tons of great artists out there; but which ones are the worthy of such an honor?
Can you really put Bach, Louis Armstrong, Elvis, Eminem, Michael Jackson and Bilie Holiday on the same list?
Someone suggested Barbara Streisand and Prodigy...... while good entertainers/musicians in their own right (I hate Barbara, BTW) neither of them are qualified to even shake Bach's hand in my opinion, for example.
My original list (I clearly stated it was incomplete) was spur of the moment.
I absolutely agree that the blues had an enormous impact on ALL rock music we hear today.
I, in fact came back to the computer to add Billie Holiday and Chuck Berry to the list.
more to come I'm sure.
