Meh. I mean, he got us a lot of land, but he was dishonest by saying that the first shot was fired in "USA Texas" to Congress to get the war to start. But he got the US to its current size and acquired a helluva lot of land, so i give 'im props for that.

He lied in order to git us all that land and he wanted to continue Andrew Jackson policy. In fact his nickname was young hickory.

Tough one for me...I like both Roosevelts. Teddy is a what a conservative should be, and F.D.R. handled the depression and WWII pretty damn well.

the discussion on Dakota got me interested -

presidents have come from 21 of the 50 states - so is this a inbuilt bias in the political system?

On the question of where Presidents came from, It woulda been difficult, for instance, for a pres to come from (say) California in the early 1800's...

There's an argument that FDR's policies did not help get us out of the Great Depression. Those people argue that World War Two got us out of the Great Depression. Which, frankly, I agree with... however, FDR got us involved in World War Two (by the way, we were involved before Pearl Harbor)... so, his policies actually did help us out of the Great Depression.

In any event, Lincoln's handling of the Civil War gives him a bump for me. Washington was a great man and a great general (and really lucky), but I'm not sure he was that great of a president (compared to Lincoln, for example).

At the risk of being subject to nonsensical abuse with no backup information (from the good Sultan)... What was wrong with President Reagan?

Illinois would also like to claim Lincoln and Obama thank you.

That's REAGAN, OBAMA and LINCOLN.
Other states, are you even trying to make great leaders?

Ohhhhhh........please don't list G.W. as being from Connecticut I'm from there, and I would rather have no Presidents from my state than that one. Let's just call him a Texan and blame them for Bush.

CN voted against Bush both times didn't they? Just cause he was born there doesn't make him from there.
Texas is to blame. [-(

So the listing of the states are the states they were born in? It didnt make sense as I thought Lincoln and Obama were from Illinois, Bush Sr from Texas, and Reagan from California. I also thought Taft was from Massachusetts.

Actually Lincoln was born in Kentucky, Obama was born in Hawaii, and Bush Sr was born in Massachusetts. And sadly as much as it pains me Little Georgie Bush was born in my home state of Connecticut.
