First off, forcing you to play that retarded card game to get summons was a bad idea. Secondly, if Squall said "..." one more damn time I was going to reach through the screen and throttle him. Oh, and the story was terrible. It hinged far too much on the love story and it just made me wanna puke.
FF9, personally, was shit. Too childish, the characters were FAR too young
Obviously, you've never played FFIII, where all of the main characters are young kids aged 13-17. Also, it was the return of Espers (called Aeons here) and the Crystal. It was charming!
FFX was damn good, FFX-2 was okay, but it tied in well with FFX at the end. It was a pretty good ending I must admit.
FFX made me fall asleep at the controller. I was willing to go along with it, but when I reached the Calm Lands, something in my brain told me that it was time to stop. I didn't play FFX-2, and I don't think I ever will. Call it, professional disinterest.
FFXII is fucking awesome, I bought it opening day, and it is simply fantastic. I definately recommend going out and buying it now.
I totally agree with you here, it's a fucking awesome game. And the battle system is a welcome breath of fresh air from "Take two steps, random encounter, take another three steps, random encounter." I liked the old battle system too (though I still prefer Chrono Trigger's system), but it's nice to see Square move past it.
And Serbia, no, you weren't born too soon. It's just one of those niche things that you get into young and you keep staying with. I suggest you pick up Final Fantasy Origins (which is FF1 and FF2) then getting FF3 for the DS (if you don't have/want a DS you can grab a translated ROM for an NES emulator). From there you can get FF4-6 with Final Fantasy Chronicles and Final Fantasy Anthology. Grab Final Fantasy Tactics too, that's a fun game. The rest are numbered accordingly. And I believe that you can skip FFX and not feel too badly about it.
Don't, under any circumstances, play Dirge of Cerberus. It's fun for about an hour, then it devolves into some of the worst story and worst pacing I've ever seen in a game. If you want a mindless shooter that is fun, play Gungrave or Gungrave Overdose. Steer clear of FF7: DoC.
