The white tree in Minis Tirith came from a piece of the original white tree that was saved when it was burned where was the original white tree

Wow, I can't believe this is stumping so many people... okay, modified question. So a big honking wold (named Carcharoth) bit off Beren's hand. What was he holding at the time, and how had he but recently acquired it?
