But I still don't understand why the the USA national holiday is more important, or better, than the Algerian one :?

Cause wicked is from the USA and not from Algeria?

It's not suggs, as I explained ad nauseum in the previous thread. don't make me paddle you for pretending not to get it, cuz I know you'd like that too much. Now let it go.

Remind me again why it's a joke?

This is assuming, of course, that holidays in general are not necessarily jokes.

PS. For the record, I didn't even bother looking at the fireworks, and I have a good view for them too. Not very exciting.

My god wicked. They had every right to make a thread called "Happy 5th of July"... It was obviously more than spam. The point of the topic was to mock your hypocrisy... but never mind, I forgot you don't understand anything beyond completely explicit language.

Except sarcasm. You're an expert at sarcasm.

No the real joke is that the English are so dumb they never notice when their kings can't even speak their own language. So we had to fight a war against the Germans (not yet called that at the time) because no one in England wanted to fight across the pond. On the process we managed to get an old coot who never wore wigs and who wore dead animal pelts for a hat over to France where the ladies immediately fell in love with him. Then we left just in time for Napoleon to take over and give you a real problem to have to defeat.

Meanwhile, freed from the colonial yolk we (at least us Northerners) started going into the industrial revolution full steam ahead and paved the way for us, centuries later, to save you yet again in WWII.

Now if you want to talk about a joke about a national holiday, let's talk about a so called failed plot to blow up a government building and England's love of Roman Catholic Bashing (which was a cherrished sport in your colony in Northern Ireland) Guy Fawkes Night. Now that's not only a joke, but an insult. Fortunately it is also the subject for another thread which I'll probably start in November just for shits and giggles.

This thread's topic is pretty spammy itself: just a place for people to type "GO USA!" The other thread had three topics, all inherent in the first post: Algeria's independence holiday, whether or not American nationalism is celebrated to a ridiculous extent, and the arbitrariness of a particular moderator. If any of those three topics breaks the Forum Guidelines, please explain how.

I was born in the united states and have lived there my entire life.

Tzor, you know nothing of history. Do stop talking about things you know nothing about.

eg Guy Fawkes night (5th Nov) is not a national holiday. Primary school stuff old bean.

The original intent of the thread was not to spam, or to push buttons like your obvious attempt Dito, but to celebrate a national holiday. The fact that others tried to bash it is unfortunate and a sad reflection of the current state of the forums.

I hope everyone enjoyed their 4th and survived with all limbs intact. If you don't want to discuss US Independance Day, please refrain from posting here.

Also, I grilled hot dogs for my dinner that day... and I went and got drunk with my friends in the true american fashion.

There may, perhaps, have been some winding up going on.
But this is a serious point. Mark my words (christ, I'm turning into Jay), with the joke that is the american legal system, independance day is not long for the world.
Some smart arse will sue, or someone will claim its racist, or a celebration of violence, or the implicit approval of terrorism, and that will be that.
So enjoy it while it lasts.

ed. -shut up, you whining, pissy son of a bitch! ;)

You know, generally speaking we in the United States love the Queen of England.

I went to London to see the queen.
(Honestly I went to London to go to the Reuters home office, didn't know she was going to pay a visit to the new building at the time.)

In Canary Wharf? That's where I work! Not for reuters though. Actualluy isn't their head office in clerkenwell?

With Thomon Reuters these days, the company changes as fast as the news. They moved into the building on Canary Warf several years ago along with the CEO. The basic reason was they wanted to be closer to the various banks and financial institutions that consumed their financial data. Reuters was always known and loved for the world class photos and news articles, but it was the financial data and the market feeds that were the bread and butter for the company. With the new Thompson Reuters, the headquarters moved to their building in Times Square, New York.

You can get a interesting timeline of the history at the corporate webpage. The Fleet Street to Canary Warf move was done in 2005. (I was there in December of that year for training purposes; training others that is.)
