Still in Toronto - last night we watched the Canada Day fireworks from a boat on the Lake.

Tonight we're going to listen to the jazz, which we are looking forward to, even though the guy probably remembers the original Canada Day in 1867.

Then home in time for more fireworks for the 4th July - though I don't think they're gonna be as spectaclar in our smallish twon as in this big city.

Oh, we also yesterday went up the CN tower, whcih is apparently the tallest buiding in the world. Standin on a glass floor at the 1100 foot level was, for someone like me who hates heights, quite something. Not necessarily a good something...

I'll post agin when I get home, before my next trek to the UK.

That's all for now from the Curl.

Jazz not really my thing but we've got some good fireworks here. The Country club near where I live always gives off a big fireworks display and after it's done we've got a whole bunch of good fireworks we've gotten from Alabama that we're going to set off from the river (we've got a platform set up out away from all the trees) Should be a good 4th.

In the spirit of the 4th, let's think up all the major events that have happened on this date not only in the US but world wide.

The stupidest rule that this site came up with was when they made it so you couldn't quote more than 3 times. I think they got rid of it though didn't they?

I believe that the entry in George the THird's diary for the day was "Nothing much happened today".

Happy July 5th, East Coastians. Now I know that this date may not seem as glamorous as the one before it but let me remind you, back in the day many would not have found out about the good news until at least the next day and therefore much of the July 4th celebration would have actually happened on the 5th.

Hi all.

Well, having spent Canada day in Canada (with some amazing fireworks), I returned home to NJ for the 4th, with some amazing rain. We did have fireworks, but being a brit, I didn't feel I had do do a patriotic duty to turn out and see the local fireworks in a downpour. they sounded good, but were shielded from my view by trees.

I did see the circus, which was great fun (I love circus) except for the utterly unfunny clowns and the bored ringmistress.
There was some noticably good juggling (something I admire tremendously, and yes I know some people find it boring)but perhaps the best bit was a guy who did a type of act I've not seen before (but which may be more familiar to some CC'ers) - he was a rather hispanic-looking type, who did what appeared to be a variation on flamenco dance, with percussion provided (as well as by stamping) by stones on the end of strings which he whirled about and stuck on the wooden floor, he produced some amazing rhythms, and flicked a cigarette out of the mouth of a volunteer, then parted his hair (the guy did not look at all like he might have been his brother. much).
Then he set fire to the strings and proceeded to perform some amazingly fast percussion until the flames were blown out. Most impressive.

Tomorrow we go to bring the kids home from camp, and then we're off to the UK to visit friends and relatives.

Hey, Suggs, you were complaining about how boring my home county of Essex is (I grew up in Essex, UK, and now live in Essex County NJ). If you were in the Alex in Southend next Tuesday evening and saw an old fat curly bastard pontificating to a few people who looked as if they were thinking "I thought we'd got rid of this guy for good", he might buy you a pint.
