Oh I'm willing to talk about it! It's just that this thread has gone the way of almost every thread and drawn in lots of the "debate-club" (by which I mean those fuckers who always talk about shit all the time of which I'm a part) which features a high percentage of atheists. The fact that Dangerboy merely said "bump" instead of talking about whatever bullshit he's talking about speaks volumes about the other side.CoffeeCream wrote:I don't think they want to talk much more about it
It's been my experience while here that a majority, not all, of the atheists here have no problem ridiculing people who don't share their belief system. Perhaps people here have had just about enough of the ridicule and that would also include DangerBoy. It's natural for someone like him to eventually respond and put the spotlight back on the insulters. I have tried to be as cordial as possible while on this site but to be honest sometimes it just doesn't seem worth it. Hopefully, I've restrained myself in my posts enough that people don't find me offensive.Snorri1234 wrote:Oh I'm willing to talk about it! I understand what you're saying, but Gregorios basically said that athiesm is the result of weed and booze, and has often said that all athiests are moraless nihilists.CoffeeCream wrote:It's been my experience while here that a majority, not all, of the atheists here have no problem ridiculing people who don't share their belief system. For my part, I came to the website not sure of the claims of Christianity and when I finally took the time to listen to my co-workers and people like Daddy1Gringo. I changed my mind and I'm pretty happy about it. I realize that it may not be for you but it appears that the majority of atheists think it's the end of the world when someone here talks about God.
I mean just check out Gregorio's post from a different discussion. He opened up and shared something deeply personal and was immediately attacked as being pompous. That's hardly fair.
Hmm, I didn't read that into his post. I'll go back and read it again. Sometimes though I think people read too much into what other people are saying and think they know the motivations of the poster. I know I've done that myself and I have to try and keep an open mind.Frigidus wrote:I understand what you're saying, but Gregorios basically said that athiesm is the result of weed and booze, and has often said that all athiests are moraless nihilists.

Maybe I am misinterpreting based on his past posts, but I just don't have much else to go by. I have had momentary lapses of civility, but I try to avoid the fairy worship comparisons when I can. I guess that the internet is the only place where ridiculing others beliefs is at least kind of acceptable.CoffeeCream wrote:Hmm, I didn't read that into his post. I'll go back and read it again. Let me just say that I do not believe that atheists are the result of those behaviors.
I think the problem here is that atheism isn't the defining characsteric, it's the "argue a lot" one. You can see that the people on the atheist side generally also argue a lot in other discussions unrelated to religion. Most of the time they use ridicule there too. It's because ridicule is such a usefull weapon, particularly in online-discussions where you can think longer about your answer.CoffeeCream wrote: It's been my experience while here that a majority, not all, of the atheists here have no problem ridiculing people who don't share their belief system.
But the problem is that he calls it on himself. I don't believe you, or OnlyAmbrose or some others have been ridiculed as much as him. You are easy-going and friendly, so we have no reason to ridicule you. I think I speak for all of us that if our posts have offended you that we're sorry. I just have the tendency to make fun of people when they post ridiculous post, and often times the ridicule is more general because they are talking about general stuff.Perhaps people here have had just about enough of the ridicule and that would also include DangerBoy.
I can not recall a single instance in my time here when I've found you offensive. I think you're pretty cool, and that your religion, while I might disagree with it, is no problem.Hopefully, I've restrained myself in my posts enough that people don't find me offensive.
It's not the God-thing, it's the tendency to take religion into other people's life. The gay-marriage thread is a prime example of that. For my part, I came to the website not sure of the claims of Christianity and when I finally took the time to listen to my co-workers and people like Daddy1Gringo. But he was being pompous! His deeply personal story was highlighted by saying how believing in God is the only thing saving you from being arrogant and selfish. Read MeDeFe's post on it, and you'll see the things we took offense at.I mean just check out Gregorio's post from a different discussion. He opened up and shared something deeply personal and was immediately attacked as being pompous. That's hardly fair.
Actually I've found the way you carry yourself in these conversations pretty tame. I wouldn't mind talking to Daddy1gringo myself. I've always been pretty curious about God and he seems like a person who would talk to you instead of at you.CoffeeCream wrote:For my part, I came to the website not sure of the claims of Christianity and when I finally took the time to listen to my co-workers and people like Daddy1Gringo. Here's the thing: Greg's post was an initial response to my post. While his surely heartfelt honesty was touching, his response was rather aggressive to my equally heartfelt and honest post. The thing is, my opinions, like yours seem to be, are thought out enough where petty attacks are really not enough to shake them. This is a good thing. It means that you are confident that your beliefs are correct. I am sincerely of the opinion that if your beliefs can't take a bit of ridicule from people you don't even know, then you need to seriously analyze those beliefs. Seeing people like danger or greg get worked up (I'll admit, it's fun, but that's because I'm a pretentious ass, like I've said before) does bother me a bit, because it shows that they have not yet reached the maturity necessary to discuss these things. Perhaps they will some day. Unfortunately, some never do.CoffeeCream wrote:It's been my experience while here that a majority, not all, of the atheists here have no problem ridiculing people who don't share their belief system. The only problem is ... whose "Christianity" are you going to ridicule? That's the problem with "Christianity" while for the most part there is a general common belief, there are a lot of significant differences in the details. Some believe in a literal interpertation of the Bible, others do not. Some believe in the importance of the "sacraments" and others do not. Some believe in the infallicy of the Bible, others believe in the infallicy of the tradition passed through the church including the Bible, and others do not.Neoteny wrote:I'm going to continue ridiculing Christianity, because my opinions have lead me to believe that it is ridiculous, and in some cases dangerous.

The dangerous part would definitely be limited to the minority, but as I consider the very premise of Christianity rather ridiculous in particular, as well as the commonalities among other religions, I don't think I can retract my current stance. The key is that I can very easily separate the person from the religion, and try to make it clear, at least in more personal interactions, that I can still enjoy one's presence and company but utterly dislike their religion. I definitely don't intend it as a personal attack, I just disagree with a majority of people in the world.tzor wrote:The only problem is ... whose "Christianity" are you going to ridicule? As I mentioned in another thread, Christians ridicule other Christians all the time, and far worse than what I've seen in this forum.
I actually do take a similar stance to those guys, although possibly not to the same extreme. I sincerely think the world would be no worse, if not much better without religion. I also think the potential picture of religion depicted by the people who are currently so quickly delineated from and by more sophisticated religionists is one that is not just mildly frightening. Additionally, I think the perspectives of many of our elected officials in the US, especially the Bush administration in the executive office, reflect a very unpleasant image on the status of the world.got tonkaed wrote:First paragraph seems pretty true. Unless your going to take a hitchens, harris, or dawkins stance against religion, your probably going to paint too broad of a brush stroke against religious believers. I also sort of believe there might be something to the idea that arguments and anger between believers might be greater than it is toward non-believers. I think its a pretty serious accusation to be seen as leading people astray, as opposed to someone who doesnt believe. Though my knowledge seems to be fading these days, it always seemed like the punishments were given with a bit extra disdain for those who were deemed to be fake, as opposed to those who never believed.

The common belief is the bit about the zombie and his invisible, telepathic dad though, right?tzor wrote: The only problem is ... whose "Christianity" are you going to ridicule? That's fine if true but a lot of posts by conquer club atheists are meant to be demeaning. If you don't believe there's a God then there's really no problem with that. The problem comes when you try to make people who do look like idiots. Atheists are in the minority, so are we to believe that a majority of people are stupid and only atheists are smart people?Neoteny wrote:The key is that I can very easily separate the person from the religion, and try to make it clear, at least in more personal interactions, that I can still enjoy one's presence and company but utterly dislike their religion.
